And the Winners are...
We recently held its Local Luxuries Raffle to raise funds to support our education programs. SBC Committee Member Beth Schenk of St. Patrick's Hospital and Health Science Center had the honor of drawing names from our raffle bucket, while several board members and staff observed.

Bonnie Buckingham of the Community Food and Agriculture Coalition won the Grand Prize: Blackfoot Overnight Adventure. Check out the NY Times article "An American Safari in Montana's Outback" to see what her trip to Rich Ranch might entail.
Kent Watson of Kent Watson and Associates, a landscape architecture firm, won the First Prize: Soul of Missoula Evening Out.

Paul Filicitti of A&E Architects won the Second Prize: Local Foodie Feast.
Susan Estep of Estep, Hope and Weber won the Third Prize: Art Extravaganza. Susan, an SBC board member, graciously donated her prize back to the SBC for use at a future event.
The raffle raised $1,426 for the SBC. With 91% of the prizes coming from locally-owned independent entities or nonprofits and the other 9% from an SBC affiliate member that shares SBC's goal of increasing the use of sustainable business and consumption practices, the raffle highlighted just how chic local and sustainable can be.
Help us thank our raffle prize contributors: Rich Ranch Outfitters and Guest Ranch, Biga Pizza, House Design Studio, Betty's Divine, Sotto Voce,Scotty's Table, The Missoula Art Museum, the Patagonia Outlet in Dillion, Uncle Bill's Sausages, Real Cooking, Sun Mountain Sports and Ten Spoon Winery.
Pretty Delicious, Pretty and Delicious:
Local Gourmet Chef Challenge Category Awards
At the 4th Annual Garden City Localfest on June 23, 2012, we held a Local Gourmet Chef Challenge. The three overall winners were announced at the event: Noel Mills of the James Bar took 1st place overall, Walker Hunter of the Pearl Cafe took 2nd place and Erin Crobar of Finn and Porter took 3rd place. However, the talent at the event was greater than those 3 awards could encompass. To let the public know just how talented the participating local chefs are, SBC is presenting category awards and will be presenting the Chefs with framed certificates.
Culinary Wizard Award - Best overall to Noel Mills, James Bar
Realm of the Senses Award - Best Presentation to Erin Crobar, Finn and Porter
Blindfolded Tastebud Award - Best Use of the Secret Ingredient to Abe Risho, Silk Road
Dictator of Good Taste Award - Best Taste to Walker Hunter, Pearl Cafe
Crafty Cook Award - Most Unique Presentation to Todd Engel, Elbow Room
Pictures of the event can be found on the Localfest Facebook page,

The Affordable Care Act and Small Business
Sol Ross of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) recently spoke in a webinar sponsored by the American Sustainable Business Council and the Main Street Alliance. He noted that small firms with 50 or less employees currently pay 18% more than large businesses do for health care coverage and that the Small Business Majority has estimated that health care costs for small businesses would double by 2018 without reform, highlighting the need for relief.
While much of the implementation to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) will be up to the states making it uncertain the exact impacts, one provision is designed to help small businesses immediately. It is a tax credit for employers with less than 25 full time employees, whose average wages are less than $50,000 per employee, and that pay 50% or more of the health care insurance premium. The credit can be claimed back to 2010, but does not apply to self-employed individuals. Additionally, once state insurance exchanges are set up, many employers and self-employed individuals in the exchanges will receive tax credits towards their premiums.
To receive a copy of the PowerPoint slides from the presentation, email info@sustainablebusinesscouncil.org.
More information is available on the DHHS website at http://www.healthcare.gov/using-insurance/employers/index.html.
You can also join Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Montana on August 30 in Missoula to learn how to make the AFA work for you. To register, visit https://www.bcbsmt.com/SiteCollectionDocuments/healthcarereform/HCR%20Road%20Show%208%2012%20email%20(3).pdf.
