Proposals will be presented for: City Hall Historic Art ($5,200), Museum Collections ($30,000) and Museum Archives - Supplemental (design funds only, amount TBD). The agenda also includes updates from Historic Newton on their capital campaign and ongoing projects with CP funding; and a working session on the current proposal for community housing at 2148 Commonwealth Avenue in Auburndale. Activities for Kids
Newton Community Ed classes at Cabot
Registration is now underway for winter classes with Newton Community Education. Coming up at Cabot we have the following:
  • Bugs on Mondays
  • Mad Science and Knitting on Wednesdays
  • Pottery on Thursdays
  • Chess on Fridays
Check out our winter Saturday programs for families and just for kids: they include Chocolate with a Twist, Slippery Science, Math Mania Weekend Adventure, Indoor Soccer, Adult-Child Pottery, and more. We have lots of classes for older elementary and middle schoolers too, like Web Design, Game Design, Karate, Robotics, Sewing, and more, plus two new programs for pre-schoolers: Create a Fairy Tale and Basketball.

If you're looking for something for your kids to do during February or April vacation, consider Digging the Egyptians, Basic Engineering, Create a TV Show, Splat, or the ever popular Domino Physics and Marble Machine Madness. In addition we have a wide variety of classes at other elementary schools, and we welcome kids from all schools at all of our classes. Vacation and Summer Programs at the New Art Center!
The New Art Center offers February and April Vacation Arts Programs to Children and Teens, as well as 9 weeks of Summer Arts Programs. Family Trip to Edaville Railroad
December 27, 2:30-8:30pm
Join us on an exciting trip to Edaville USA in Carver, MA. The Festival of Lights features millions of lights and displays in a spectacular holiday celebration. Visitors can ride the heated train past an explosion of holiday lights and decorations, listen to carols, and enjoy all of the outdoor rides and attractions that make Edaville USA a New England tradition! Puddlestompers
December 28, 29 and 30, 9:00 am - noon
A drop off program for 3 - 6 year olds.. Explore the beauty and quiet of winter in this indoor based program. Learn about how animals survive the winter and why evergreens keep their leaves. Look for animal tracks and other signs of winter activity. Each day will explore a different aspect of nature in winter. Located at Nahanton Park.

It's like summer camp in the winter. Several different activities to choose from each day including sports, arts and crafts, gym activities, inside games, cooking, outside games, special events and more. Be sure to bring a lunch and snack each day. 8:15AM -3:30PM with extended day available to 5:30PM. $45.00 per day or $160.00 for all 4 days. Add $12.50 per day for extended day.

FUN-damentals of Fencing

For ages 8 and older.  Fence without buying expensive equipment!  Use our safe practice equipment to learn footwork, attack and defense techniques.  Whether you are new or experienced, you will learn new techniques and will get to try out your new swashbuckler skills in duels and sword games each week.  Each class is one in a series of four which can be taken in no particular order to get a good footing in basics and a variety of more advanced techniques.  Each in the series teaches specific advanced techniques not shown in the others and relate their specific advanced techniques to sabre or rapier.  Located at the Newton South Recreation Complex.

3:00 - 4:00pm:  Special Attacks and Sabre - This class contains more advanced attack techniques such as redoublement and related lessons in sabre.

4:30 - 5:30: Dodging Techniques and Rapier - This class contains more advanced dodging techniques such as the in quartata and related lessons in rapier.

Badminton Instruction

For ages 16 and older.  Learn the rules and how to play, or improve on your current techniques and skills with instructor Wee Tam.  Round robin play will allow participants to practice what they have learned.  All equipment will be provided.  Participants may bring their own racquets.  12:15 - 2:15 PM Located at the Newton South Recreation Complex.

Family Badminton

American Red Cross Babysitters Training Course
February 28 & March 7
For ages 11 - 15.  Learn the basics of infant and child care including feeding and changing, accident prevention, emergency response, and how to be a successful babysitter.  All youth will receive a babysitters handbook & Child and Infant CPR certification.  1:00-6:00 PM Located at the Newton South Recreation Complex

3rd grade boys basketball
NAA C League - The Newton Athletic Association runs basketball leagues for boys (and a few girls) in grades 3 through high school. Over 500 players participate in Newton's largest basketball league. The C League is the NAA's "entry level" league. Teams play a 10 - 12 game regular season schedule beginning in early December and running through mid-March. Games are played at the Underwood School on Saturdays from 9am - 2pm using lower height baskets. Practices are one night per week on either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday for one hour from either 6-7pm or 7-8pm also at Underwood. Fee for the season is $140 which includes all games, practices and uniform shirt. Registration is open for the C League at http://www.naabasketball.org

Newton Holiday celebration
December 20, 1:30-3:30pm

Mayor Cohen welcomes everyone to celebrate the Holidays with your friends and neighbors on Sunday, December 20th from 1:30 - 3:30 at Newton City Hall. Enjoy the free entertainment and activities for children that are fun for the whole family.  You can see the American Chinese Art Society, singer Wayne Potash, the Gerwick Puppets and storyteller Tom McCabe.  There is also face painting and free refreshments. Historic Newton - Stories in the Snow family program
December 29, 1pm

Greet winter with open arms at this family program. We'll read Katy and the Big Snow by Newton author Virginia Lee Burton. Storytime will be followed by craft activities. Kids of all ages can enjoy the warmth of the Jackson Homestead, where we'll serve hot cider and snacks.  Cost: $15 per family ($10 for members); includes museum admission, materials, and snack. Prepaid registration is recommended, call 617-796-1450 to register.

Aquatics Open House
January 3, 1-4pm

The Aquatics Department at the JCC in Newton will be having an Open House for new swim class participants on January 3rd from 1-4pm.  We will be doing half hour swim class samplers for children ages 6 mos-12 yrs.  Pre-registration is required.  Please contact Korrinn at 617.558.6468.  Light refreshments will be served.

Coach Education: Coaching the Youth Soccer Player
January 10, 1-6pm

Join the former Director of Coaching from the Irish Football Association and former Northern Ireland U-21 manager, Roy Millar, for a coaching symposium including practical seminars and lectures on how to effectively coach soccer to the youth player. Also in attendance will be women's D1 Holy Cross coach, Darren Gallagher, who will be running a practical session. Badminton Tournament for B and C Level Doubles
February 21, 12:30-8:30pm

Show your badminton skills in this badminton tournament.  All teams will play a minimum of 2 games. There will be a B Level Men's Division, Women's Division and Mixed Doubles Division, as well as a C Level Men's Division, Women's Division and Mixed Doubles Division.  Register by February 12, 2010.  Each team member must register.  Please write your partner's name in the note section or write looking for partner if you don't have one. Summer Camp Staff Interviews
March 14

Newton Parks and Recreation is looking for people ages 15 or older that are interested in working at our camps this summer?  We are looking for a variety of staff including counselors, senior counselors, specialists, and unit leaders.  A limited number of spaces are available for interviews.  Please call Channon Ames after January 24th at 617-796-1529 for an application and to set up an interview time for March 14th.

Recycle your old trash barrels and recycling bins

For $10 per household, old trash barrels and recycling bins will be picked up and recycled (maximum 3 per household), with proceeds going to Christopher's Haven, an outpatient facility for children undergoing brain cancer treatment at MGH. Leave old trash barrels at the end of your driveway with an envelope taped to the outside, with a $10 check payable to Christopher's Haven. Pine Manor College Child Study Center
We have immediate openings for children 2 years 9 months  to 5 yrs.  Part time and full time schedules are offered 3 to 5 days per week. The center is open 7: 30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  This NAEYC accredited preschool program offers gymnastics, an outdoor science curriculum, and music as enrichment activities.  Professional teachers with additional help from college student teachers create a warm, loving environment for the children.  Contact Lynne Love, Director, at lovelynne@pmc.edu or call 617 731-7039 to schedule a tour and meet the teachers.

The Newton Department of Public Works is preparing a list of STUDENTS (or adults) willing to shovel snow for your local senior residents for a fee. Can YOU please help out?

Students/participants should be aware
  • When you sign to be on this list, your name, village and phone # will be made available to those residents, often the elderly, needing assistance w/snow shoveling.
  • Under age 18 should check with parent(s) before signing up to be on this public list.
  • When you receive a phone call for a possible job, you will be responsible for negotiating a price and establishing parameters for the job.
This is a private negotiation with no City involvement.
