Proposals will be presented for: City Hall Historic Art ($5,200), Museum Collections ($30,000) and Museum Archives - Supplemental (design funds only, amount TBD). The agenda also includes updates from Historic Newton on their capital campaign and ongoing projects with CP funding; and a working session on the current proposal for community housing at 2148 Commonwealth Avenue in Auburndale. Activities for Kids
3rd grade boys basketball
NAA C League - The Newton Athletic Association runs basketball leagues for boys (and a few girls) in grades 3 through high school. Over 500 players participate in Newton's largest basketball league. The C League is the NAA's "entry level" league. Teams play a 10 - 12 game regular season schedule beginning in early December and running through mid-March. Games are played at the Underwood School on Saturdays from 9am - 2pm using lower height baskets. Practices are one night per week on either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday for one hour from either 6-7pm or 7-8pm also at Underwood. Fee for the season is $140 which includes all games, practices and uniform shirt. Registration is open for the C League at http://www.naabasketball.org

Family Trip to Edaville Railroad
December 27, 2:30-8:30pm
Join us on an exciting trip to Edaville USA in Carver, MA. The Festival of Lights features millions of lights and displays in a spectacular holiday celebration. Visitors can ride the heated train past an explosion of holiday lights and decorations, listen to carols, and enjoy all of the outdoor rides and attractions that make Edaville USA a New England tradition! Bus leaves from the Albemarle Field House. $30.00

December 29 & 30
Enjoy a movie, popcorn and drink all for only $6.00. Tickets will be sold starting at the West Newton Cinema on the day of the event. This is a popular event and tickets may sell out.

Puddlestompers
December 28, 29 and 30, 9:00 am - noon
A drop off program for 3 - 6 year olds.. Explore the beauty and quiet of winter in this indoor based program. Learn about how animals survive the winter and why evergreens keep their leaves. Look for animal tracks and other signs of winter activity. Each day will explore a different aspect of nature in winter. Located at Nahanton Park.

Fun-tastic Vacation Program

For Grades K - 2 at the Newton Centre Hut.
For Grades K - 6 at the Lower Falls Community Center
It's like summer camp in the winter. Several different activities to choose from each day including sports, arts and crafts, gym activities, inside games, cooking, outside games, special events and more. Be sure to bring a lunch and snack each day. 8:15AM -3:30PM with extended day available to 5:30PM. $45.00 per day or $160.00 for all 4 days. Add $12.50 per day for extended day.

Thundercat All Sports Clinic

Half Day Program for Ages 5 - 7, Full Day Program for Ages 7 - 12. For the sports enthusiast. Play a variety of games including basketball, floor hockey, soccer, and more - all in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. Located at Pelligrini Park. Be sure to bring a lunch and snack each day. Half Day Program - 9:00 AM - 12:00 noon. $120.00 for residents/$130.00 non-residents.  Full Day Program - 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM. $160.00 residents/$170.00 non-residents.

Newton Youth Players Announces its 2010-11 Season
Get your child involved in musical theatre.  "My Fair Lady" is on tap for summer 2010; "Guys and Dolls" will be staged in the fall of 2010; "Peter Pan" in the winter of 2011, and "My Fair Lady" in the spring of 2011.  These programs fill quickly, so early registration is encouraged.  Rehearsals held at Newton Cultural Center, 225 Nevada Street on Tuesdays 3:30-5:00 and Thursdays from 3:45 to 5:15.  Classes for Grades 3-7 held Mondays 4-5:30.  Children's theatre company for elementary school children grades 1-5.  For further info and to register: 617-796-1540 or www.newtonyouthplayers.com.

NCSC Chestnut Street Teen Center Grand Opening

Newton Community Service Center (NCSC) and The Newton Partnership cordially invite the community to the Grand Opening celebration of the new Chestnut Street Teen Center, 1254 Chestnut Street, Newton Upper Falls, on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at 7:00 - 9:00 pm. Gerry T. Leone, Jr., Middlesex District Attorney, and Dr. V. James Marini, Interim Superintendent of Newton Public Schools, will speak. Special guests include Mayor David Cohen and Mayor-Elect Setti Warren. Teen Center staff and teen members will be on-hand to describe the program and answer questions. Parenting workshop for Spanish-speaking families
December 2, 7-8:30pm

The Newton Partnership and the Newton Community Service Center are co-sponsoring a parenting workshop for Spanish-speaking families with school-aged children entitled Raising Children in America: Challenges and Hopes on Wednesday, December 2, 2009, 7:00-8:30 P.M. at the Newton Community Service Center, (behind the W. This workshop, conducted in Spanish, will explore the often conflicting values, beliefs and assumptions that immigrant families struggle with raising their children in America. Together parents and guardians will discuss the value of preserving their own cultural traditions and methods of parenting versus integrating American parenting techniques and how parents and guardians can negotiate between the two.

This workshop will be facilitated by Loraine Araujo, M.Ed. She is a multi-lingual therapist for The Parents Program at Newton Community Service Center, where she works closely with immigrant families.

Recycle your old trash barrels and recycling bins
For $10 per household, old trash barrels and recycling bins will be picked up and recycled (maximum 3 per household), with proceeds going to Christopher's Haven, an outpatient facility for children undergoing brain cancer treatment at MGH. Leave old trash barrels at the end of your driveway with an envelope taped to the outside, with a $10 check payable to Christopher's Haven. To schedule a pick-up, contact barrelpickup@yahoo.com and include your address, village, and number of barrels or bins.

The Diane K. Trust Center for Early Education of Temple Ohabei Shalom, 1187 Beacon St., Brookline, serves children ages 2.9 - 5 years of age in both half and full-day programs with extended care available.  The Center provides the building blocks for each preschooler to develop a love of learning that will serve as the basis for a personal journey of discovery and wonder. Earn $$$$ Shoveling Snow
The Newton Department of Public Works is preparing a list of STUDENTS (or adults) willing to shovel snow for your local senior residents for a fee. Can YOU please help out?

Students/participants should be aware
  • When you sign to be on this list, your name, village and phone # will be made available to those residents, often the elderly, needing assistance w/snow shoveling.
  • Under age 18 should check with parent(s) before signing up to be on this public list.
  • When you receive a phone call for a possible job, you will be responsible for negotiating a price and establishing parameters for the job.
This is a private negotiation with no City involvement.
