Activities for Kids
Newton Youth Players Announces its 2010-11 Season
Get your child involved in musical theatre.  "My Fair Lady" is on tap for summer 2010; "Guys and Dolls" will be staged in the fall of 2010; "Peter Pan" in the winter of 2011, and "My Fair Lady" in the spring of 2011.  These programs fill quickly, so early registration is encouraged.  Rehearsals held at Newton Cultural Center, 225 Nevada Street on Tuesdays 3:30-5:00 and Thursdays from 3:45 to 5:15.  Classes for Grades 3-7 held Mondays 4-5:30.  Children's theatre company for elementary school children grades 1-5.  For further info and to register: 617-796-1540 or www.newtonyouthplayers.com.

Jewish education after-school program
Kesher Newton provides excellence in Jewish and Hebrew education on weekday afternoons (Tuesday's our program begins at 12:30 after early release). In a joy-filled, camp-like environment, we explore Jewish knowledge and cultivate a sense of community as our children grow to become proud, educated Jews. Children's Art Classes at the New Art Center

Many classes still have openings for the Early Fall Term (late September through end of October), and for the Late Fall Term (first week of November through mid-December). Classes for children include Ceramics, Draw Fantasy & Manga, Artistic Architects, Play-n-Clay, Clay Creatures, Adventures in Art, and Young Artists. We also offer a Saturday Drop-In Art Class for grades K-5 from 10-11am with a different project each week. Classes for Teens and Adults also available. NAA Basketball  
On-line Registration is now open for the 2009-10 NAA basketball season. The NAA is a non-profit volunteer-run organization that organizes and administers basketball leagues in Newton for boys who live in Newton or attend school in Newton. Our leagues are for players from the third grade through high school. To register, or to find out more about the league, please visit our website at www.NAAbasketball.org. Registration deadline is October 20.

Kids' Karate Free Trial Class
Free uniform for those who enroll. Entry ages 1st through 5th grades, boys and girls. Friday, Nov. 6, 4:45-5:45, or Saturday, Nov. 7, 10:00-11:00 a.m. Cost per 7-Week Session: $79 for once-a-week or $99 for twice-a-week. Renting beautiful space at Trinity High School, Newton. Sports equipment exchange
November 3, 2:30-5:30pm

Are you looking for a great price on sports equipment? Do you have skates or roller blades that your children have outgrown? Is your bowling ball collecting dust in your closet? Lower Falls Community Center will hold a used sports equipment sale on Tuesday, November 3rd. from 2:30-5:30. Baked goods and some crafts will also be on sale. If you would like to donate lightly used gear, please drop it off before 6:00 PM on Nov 2nd. or on Tuesday, Nov 3rd. before two. The center is located at 545 Grove Street in Newton Lower Falls. Crew for Cancer Benefit
November 7, 7:30pm

Everyone is invited to the "Crew for Cancer Benefit" for a Dragon Cocktail! This fun event will be held at the Community Rowing (CRI) Boathouse on the Charles River at 7:30 p.m. There will be Live Music (a great Jazz Band and Guitar Duet), Wine & Cheese, Hors d'Oeurvres, Dessert Bar, Door Prizes, along with a Silent Auction. All proceeds benefit the Wellness Warriors, a crew for cancer program. This guide to residential building science includes a hands-on demonstration of energy audit tools. You'll leave this workshop with a better idea of how your house works--and doesn't work--and what you can do to reduce energy consumption. The Play's the Thing: How to Support Development through Play-Infants through Preschool

This workshop will explore the types of toys and play that support developmental needs and help build strong relationships and success in school. Facilitator Sarae Pacetta is an adjunct faculty member in BU's Early Childhood department and a member of T.R.U.C.E., a local advocacy group that works to support families and teachers in raising children in today's media-saturated culture. Family play with Ellen Jackson: Games of the 1880s

Spend a Sunday afternoon visiting with Ellen Jackson, learning about the games of her time. Find out what kids did for fun before TV, video games, and the internet. History book club
Tuesday, November 17, 7:30 pm
The book club will meet for its bimonthly discussion of a work of social history. This meeting's selection is The Path Between the Seas: The Creation of the Panama Canal by David McCullough. The book club is free and new members are always welcome.

2nd Annual Newton Preservation Awards

These awards recognize projects which feature the preservation of Newton's historic buildings and landscapes and promote awareness of Newton's historic fabric. The Newton Preservation Awards are an opportunity to celebrate those individuals that have chosen preservation as a sustainable reinvestment in the Newton community. Concerts in the Kitchen with singer, songwriter and storyteller Claudia Nygaard

Sam Glaser performance
November 8, 1:30pm

Jewish recording artist Sam Glaser will be appearing in a 1:30pm concert at Temple Reyim in Newton on Sunday, November 8. Sam's soulful music has become part of the fabric of Jewish life in communities worldwide. He has recorded 20 CDs of award-winning original music and timeless classics, and was named one of the top ten Jewish artists in the US by Moment magazine. He performs in an average of fifty cities a year and his energetic style and passionate delivery never fails ignite the spirit of audiences of all ages. Tickets are $18, $14 for seniors. 30th Anniversary Celebration of Understanding Our Differences

Go Green and put more green back into your wallet!
Newton Eco Team Project, endorsed by dozens of local institutions, is a community-wide energy conservation program that teaches, step-by-step, how to substantially reduce your carbon output in just a month's time. The program is structured with an easy-to-use workbook. Small groups of neighbors and friends meet four times to learn ways to save money and energy. Schools, cultural groups, faith-based groups, political groups and business groups are all enthusiastically joining this effort with the goal of reducing energy consumption in at least a quarter of all homes in Newton. SOAR 55
Service Opportunities After Reaching 55, (www.soar-ma.org ) a program of the Newton Community Center and part of the Corporation for National and Community Service connects adults 55+ with community service opportunities in Newton and Metrowest. We collaborate with over 65 nonprofit and civic organizations and work with you individually to find a meaningful opportunity that meets your interests, skills and schedule. Sample assignments include; Join a team and Mentor an inmate at MCI Framingham enrolled in Boston Universitythrough Partakers "College Behind Bars" program; become a Model United Nations Club Advisor and promote student interest in the world in our middle schools; Join SOAR 55's Nonprofit Management Consulting Group and help nonprofits with management and programmatic needs.  All of our assignments are a chance to lean new skills, share your experience and make new neighborhood connections. Orientation, support and training are provided and many assignments require approximately 2 hours a week. Newton Community Service Center needs volunteers
Parent-Child Home Programs of Newton Community Service Center is looking for volunteers to provide home visits to low income families with toddler children. Home visitors bring free literacy tools (books and toys) to the families and model ways to increase positive verbal interactions in the home. Training and weekly supervision is provided. Presbyteriam Church Nursery School enrolling for fall 2010
Thinking of enrolling your child in our nursery school program next fall? Registration begins October 1st for NPC member and families returning to PCNS, and October 15th for the general public. Stand for Children's 2009 Survey of Local Candidates
This fall, Newton residents like you will decide the future direction of our city and schools. When we vote for Mayor, Board of Aldermen, and School Committee, our decisions affect many critical issues - including the hiring of a new school superintendent and implementation of the Newton Public Schools Strategic Plan.  For the first time in recent memory, the municipal ballot features numerous hotly contested races. To help you get informed, we surveyed all of the mayoral and contested school committee candidates.  Read the candidates' responses at www.stand.org/ma/2009NewtonCandidateSurvey  In this election, it is our responsibility as voters to learn about the candidates and make educated choices at the ballot box. Boys & Girls Club Now Accepting School Year Registrations
The John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club is accepting registrations for the 20092010 School Year.  Membership to the Club is just $125 per family and includes all children ages 6-18.  Daily afterschool programming in the areas of Sports, Education, Recreation, and Art are all included for this one low fee in addition to Teen Programs and Intramural Basketball.  Financial Aid is available for those in need.  Kids Corp is available for parents of children in grades 1-5 who desire additional supervision and support.  Go to the "applications section" at www.newtonbgc.com for more information.
