Cabot Announcements

Vote today!
If you would like to read about the educational views and visions of candidates in the upcoming Newton election, the education advocacy group, Stand For Children, had presented them on their website:  http://www.stand.org/ma/2009NewtonCandidateSurveyhttp://www.stand.org/ma/2009NewtonCandidateSurvey

The Newton School Committee has an email newsletter containing information relevant to all parents of NPS students.  The latest edition had information about the superintendent search, the Strategic Plan and an open community meeting with the Interim Superintendent, Jim Marini. If you would like to receive this newsletter, please click on the following link to add your email address to the mailing list:
http://visitor.constantcontact.com/manage/optin?v=001Qo1SzxA2oRTEzu65MIRS3sq2luC8IbGy

And just a friendly reminder...if you are supporting a candidate by holding signs, handing out flyers and so forth (a great thing to do!), please make sure that this is not done on school property (on the sidewalk by the school is fine as this is public property). Thanks!

Gift wrap orders are in!
Please pick up your gift wrap order in the Music/Art Corridor.  Also, if you are missing any items or need corrections made, please let me know soon as I can only submit one correction order and plan to send it in the beginning of next week.  Contact Kate Johnson at kate@textreviews.com

School photo retake day is November 5
If you want your child to have a picture retaken send your current photo package to school with your child on November 5, and let the teacher know that your child will be having a retake. This is also the make-up date for anyone who was absent on Picture Day; the Cabot office has provided an absentee list to Coffee Pond. Finally, if your student missed the photos for any other reason, this is the date for you!

Support school safety
As part of our continuing effort to provide a safe environment for children and adults, the office reminds the community of our safety practices.

All parents and visitors are expected to report to the office upon entering and exiting the building (at any time other than arrival and dismissal). We have posted signs outside requesting that all visitors report to the office. Regular classroom and library volunteers are expected to sign in as well.

SIGN IN AND GET A BADGE TO IDENTIFY YOURSELF TO
STUDENTS AND ADULTS WHO WORK IN THE BUILDING.

SIGN OUT WHEN YOU LEAVE THE SCHOOL.

***** DOOR SCHEDULE *****

Morning Procedure
As stated in our Guidelines for the Safe Arrival and Departure of All Students, children driven to school must be dropped off in the Blue Zone" on Parkview.  No child is to be dropped off on Bridges Ave. or in the faculty parking lot.  All students and parents must enter the building through the main lobby or the kindergarten wing doors.  After 8:34 a.m., parents and visitors must enter through the door adjacent to the playground.  All other doors will be locked.

Afternoon Procedure
Doors (excluding the faculty parking lot door) will be unlocked 15 minutes prior to dismissal. Parents in cars need to pick up their children in the "Blue Zone" on Parkview. No child is to be picked up behind the school on Bridges or in the faculty parking lot. All doors will be locked at 3:30 p.m. (1 p.m. on Tuesdays and early release days) except one main lobby door.

We are a community school. All parents, guardians and
supportive adults are welcome! Let's work to keep it safe!

Dog walkers, please exercise caution
If you bring your canine friend with you when you drop off and/or pick up your child, please exercise caution on and near the blacktop and playground. Some students have been frightened by dogs recently, and we want to make sure that everyone is comfortable.

Weigh in on superintendent search!
The superintendent search committee values community opinions. A survey is now available online, and parents/guardians are asked to give their opinions. You can link to it directly at http://bit.ly/SuptSearchSurvey (be sure to get the capitalization correct) - or you can link to it through the School Committee website home page.
The more opinions we can collect, the better informed the committee can be in this important process.

If you'd prefer to write a few sentences about what you're looking for in a superintendent, email Laura Holt at lkholt@comcast.net or mail your comments to Laura Holt, 35 Vineyard Road, Newton, MA, 02459 by Wednesday, November 4th.

Out-of-District Policy Statement
Out-of-District placements for students who wish to attend a school in Newton other than his/her district school are limited.  Such placements are made on a space available basis only.  Newton families, as well as members of Units A, B, C, D, E, NESA, Custodians and Boston parents of students in the METCO Program, should call the Elementary Education Office (grades K - 5) at 617-559-6105 or the Deputy Superintendent's Office (grades 6 - 12) at 617-559-6115 for information.  Students who receive acceptance for Out-of-District placement must remain in the school selected for the duration of the school year.

Applications for the following school year must be submitted on forms which will be available beginning November 2 in the Elementary Education Office (grades K - 5), Room 218, or the Deputy Superintendent's Office (grades 6 - 12), Room 214, at the Education Center.

If necessary, a lottery will be implemented to determine the order in which placements will be made.  Completed applications, signed by the in-district principal, can be submitted no earlier than January 4, 2010 and no later than March 31, 2010.  Applications submitted after March 31, 2010 will not be included in the lottery.

Class size in a given grade, in a given year, in a specific school, may preclude any placements including siblings.

Parents will be responsible for transportation.

Tuition Free Enrollment is limited to the per pupil cost of regular education.
