Singing the Blue Zone blues
We're sad and frightened to
share with you some of the recent safety violations witnessed in the Blue Zone.
-
A car parked in the middle
of Parkview and a caretaker spending three minutes getting out, picking up a
child, buckling the child, and tying up an entire line of cars (accompanied by
yelling and honking from stuck drivers)
-
Cars stopping in the middle
of Parkview with children zigzagging between cars to reach their own vehicles
-
Cars completely blocking
neighbors' driveways on Bridges
-
Cars blocking the crosswalk
on the field side and in the Blue Zone
-
Cars stopping in the bus
stop to drop off/pick up children
-
Cars parked in every
possible No Parking area
For the sake of our children's
safety, please respect the rules of the Blue Zone, and please review them with
others who transport your children (spouses, caretakers, grandparents). The
Blue Zone is a moving zone. Pull against the curb as far forward as possible to
unload and load passengers. Do not pull up until you see the whites of your
child's eyes! If you have not made eye contact, circle the school. Do not drop
off or pick up children behind the school or away from the curb. Park only in
designated areas.
If you wish to avoid
following the rules of the Blue Zone, park on a neighboring street and walk to
the blacktop. You'll enjoy a few minutes of exercise and a chance to meet new
people.
We're happy to report that
Officer Devine of the Newton Police force is once again patrolling the Blue
Zone in the interest of maintaining safety for our children.
No cliques at Cabot! Great news: new parents are
jumping right in to the varied work of the PTO. We have new parents running a
small fundraiser, creating a bulletin board, drafting documents, and clipping
Box Tops. There's a job for you! Email Sally or Lori (see below) so we can get
you started.
If you see a new
parent/guardian standing alone on the blacktop, please remember to introduce
yourself.
Get to know your School
Council Want to see how your School
Council works? Sit in on one of our upcoming meetings (November 3 and December
1, from 5-7 p.m., in Mr. McCarthy's classroom). School Council members meet
monthly in an advisory capacity to Mr. Swaim to identify educational needs, set
educational goals, review the school building budget, and prepare the school
improvement plan. Current members are co-chair Jim Swaim; community member
Patty Waszeciak; parent representatives Krista Kett, Angela Pitter-Wright, Jim
Robertson (co-chair), Charles Rudnick, Andrea Steenstrup, and Lisa Svensson;
staff members Abby Bargende, Dana Bennett, Susan Gleason, and Matt Tirrell; and
PTO ex-officio members Sally Brickell and Lori Knowles.
PTO open house welcomes
volunteers Back-to-School Night was
enhanced with the addition of a PTO open house in the new lunch room. Parents
and guardians had a chance to mingle, learn about changes in the lunch process,
and identify ways to volunteer as part of their PTO membership. Thanks to the
many committee chairs and non-committee chairs who provided baked goods,
created displays, published an informational brochure, arranged for laptops,
and staffed this special event.
Community Supper draws a
crowd
Joanne Gatnik, Gail Harris,
and Sharon Jacobs did a wonderful job bringing together loads of Cabot families
for the annual Community Supper. They overcame many logistical hurdles to pull
off this special event, resulting in a fun, relaxing evening for all. And, just
think, it didn't even snow!
Pedestrians flock to
International Walk to School Day Thanks to the upbeat
attitude of Ms. Bennett, Mary Kathryn Fallon, and Jodi Vito, rainy weather did
not dampen spirits on the blacktop during International Walk to School Day.
Walkers turned out in droves and enjoyed--along with the non-walkers--cider,
fruit bars, inspiring music, and the chance to sign their names on a
celebratory poster. If you're interested in promoting walking and would like to
"own" the Safe Routes effort, please email Mary Kathryn at marykathf@aol.com.
Coffees with the principal
are brewing
Last week Mr. Swaim hosted a
small but friendly group at the first of four informal coffees planned for this
year. The topic was, "Making a Smooth Transition to First Grade." Mrs. Cain and
Mr. Miller, the featured speakers, gave attendees a lot of helpful information.
Join us at a future coffee right after drop-off; mark the following dates in
your calendar: Friday, December 11, 2009; Friday, February 5, 2010; Thursday
May 13, 2010.
Still time to pay your PTO

who have already paid!

Welcome back to School. I am hoping for a
Healthy School Year!
Flu Information
As you know, flu can be
easily spread from person to person. It is important to remember that any flu
virus can cause serious illness. This year a new type of flu virus - H1N1
(swine) flu - is circulating, along with the typical seasonal flu seen every
winter. Prevention steps for both types of flu are the same.
-
Wash your hands often, or
use hand sanitizer when a sink is unavailable
-
Cover up your cough or
sneeze with your arm instead of your hands
-
Stay home if you are sick
-
Get vaccinated when vaccine
is available
Two different types of flu
vaccine are available this year, and each one comes in a shot or intranasal
spray. The seasonal flu vaccine provides protection against the seasonal flu
only. H1N1 vaccine provides protection against H1N1 influenza only. Both types
of flu vaccine are recommended for children. More information about the flu and
flu vaccine is available at www.newtonma.gov/flu or by contacting me at (617) 559-9404
or
Vision and Hearing Screening:
Over the next few months I will be conducting State mandated vision and hearing
screenings for all students. Grades K thru 5 will be screened for vision
concerns and Grades K thru 3 for hearing concerns. These screenings are done
annually and on occasion problems are identified and parents are notified.
Measurements: As a state
mandated assessment of physical growth and development, the Newton Public
Schools measure height and weight for students in Grades 1, 4, 7 and 9. Theses
measurements are used to calculate body mass index (BMI) and BMI percentage
based on age and gender. BMI is a screening tool. This assessment will be
conducted for students in Grades 1 and 4 in the next few months. Each child
will be weighed and measured privately in the Health Office. If you would like
to see your child's results or receive additional information and resources
please contact me.
Pediculosis - Head Lice:
Pedulosis is a common problem in school-aged children. Routine examination of
your child's hair several times a month is a good at home screening technique.
Start by looking behind the ears and along the neckline. You are looking for
red blotches and/or bite marks on the scalp, tiny eggs cemented to the hair
shaft and live lice, which are small insects the size of a sesame seed.
By working together we can
protect the health of our students. If you have any questions or concerns please
contact your health provider or feel free to stop by the Health Room.
Thank
you. Karen Kerrigan, RN

Volunteers Needed

EEEK! If it's near
Halloween, it must be... WELLNESS DAY!!! We are pleased to announce
the 6th Annual Cabot School Wellness Day, on Friday, October 30. It's a
wonderful way to expend some of that "special
day" energy, have a
spooky amount of fun, and learn about some wellness issues too.
Activity/learning stations
will be set up around Cabot Field (weather
permitting) and the kids and
their buddies will all get a chance to try
everything. Some activities
already planned are: Karate with Steve
Giroux from Giroux Martial
Arts, relay races, the Monster
Mash, meditation, pumpkin games and more!
We are looking for
approximately 20 volunteers to help that morning from 9-11:30. We are also looking for any
dentists/dental professionals, doctors, Monster Mash dancers,
fitness folks (e.g.Step aerobics,
Pilates, dance professionals, nutrition experts, or especially
interested in wellness education). Even if you can't help on that day, your
input and ideas would be very valuable.
To help or ask any
questions, please contact Betsy DiSciullo betsy.disciullo@gmail.com, or
Jennifer Borhegyi jborhegyi@alum.wpi.edu, or
Dana Bennett, Wellness guru
extraordinaire and P.E.
teacher, Dana_Bennett@newton.k12.ma.us.
Looking forward to another
great day on the field!

School photo retake day is November
5
If you want your child to have a
picture retaken send your current photo package to school with your child on
November 5, and let the teacher know that your child will be having a
retake. This is also the make-up date for anyone who was absent on
Picture Day; the Cabot office has provided an absentee list to Coffee Pond.
Finally, if your student missed the photos for any other reason, this is the
date for you!
Plan ahead for your child
Please minimize
interruptions to the Cabot School office by making arrangements for your child
IN ADVANCE. This will reduce unnecessary calls to the office about playdates
and changes in pickup. With a large number of students, the office ends up
fielding a staggering number of calls each day, and the volume is difficult to
manage. In addition, teachers find calls about children's plans disruptive
during the school day. Some do not check their mailboxes during the day. This
puts an additional burden on the office in terms of having to remember who has
called during the day so that they can make calls to classrooms at the end of
the day or take time away from the office to deliver individual messages.
Thank you from the Community Supper team!
A heartfelt thank you to the
100+ members of our community who
contributed either precious
time or delicious baked goods to
the Cabot
Community Supper! It was
wonderful to see everyone--large and small
--reconnecting, dancing and
having fun. A warm thank you
to our
devoted teachers Mrs. Fitts,
Mrs. Gleason, Mrs. Stern, Mr. Tirrell, and
Mr. Wong for serving pizza
after a long day of teaching. We
are
enormously grateful to Mary
Kathryn Ward, Sandy Connors, Rachel Boloyan and Faith Witte who went
above and beyond in volunteering their time. Hats off to
alumnae Rachel Adelsheim and Alyssa Kaplan for running a fun-filled
Capture-the-Flag game. Sincere appreciation is extended to our tireless custodians
Kenny and Mario who were essential to
set up and clean up. Finally, thank you to Trader Joes,
Shaws and Stop & Shop for their continued support
of the event through generous donations.
Gratefully, the CS
Co-Chairs-- Joanne Gatnik, Gail Harris and Sharon Jacobs

"20th Century" presented by the highly
acclaimed Theatre Ink This hilarious, fast-paced comedy will have

win back his former lover and leading lady, Lily Garland. Outrageous
characters and wild twists drive this over-the-top farce, complete with
a religious zealot writing faulty checks and a plan for a Passion Play
starring a menagerie of wild animals. November 12, 13 and 14 at
7:30pm. Lasker Auditorium at NNHS, 360 Lowell Avenue, Newtonville.
Tickets $7 at www.theatreink.net or 617-559-6406.
Out-of-District Policy
Statement
Out-of-District placements
for students who wish to attend a school in Newton other than his/her district
school are limited. Such placements
are made on a space available basis only.
Newton families, as well as members of Units A, B, C, D, E, NESA,
Custodians and Boston parents of students in the METCO Program, should call the
Elementary Education Office (grades K - 5) at 617-559-6105 or the Deputy
Superintendent's Office (grades 6 - 12) at 617-559-6115 for information. Students who receive acceptance for
Out-of-District placement must remain in the school selected for the duration
of the school year.
Applications for the
following school year must be submitted on forms which will be available
beginning November 2 in the Elementary Education Office (grades K - 5), Room
218, or the Deputy Superintendent's Office (grades 6 - 12), Room 214, at the
Education Center.
If necessary, a lottery will
be implemented to determine the order in which placements will be made. Completed applications, signed by the
in-district principal, can be submitted no earlier than January 4, 2010 and no
later than March 31, 2010.
Applications submitted after March 31, 2010 will not be included in the
lottery.
Class size in a given grade,
in a given year, in a specific school, may preclude any placements including
siblings.
Parents will be responsible
for transportation.
Tuition Free Enrollment is
limited to the per pupil cost of regular education.
Strategic Plan Task Forces: Call for Volunteers
In the process of strategic
planning, a number of promising ideas were put forward. We are establishing task
forces to study three of these ideas in greater depth. Each task force will
have a team leader and include both educators and community volunteers. The
team leader will establish a process for selecting other team members who will
work together to establish goals and timeframes. After they are constituted and
have developed a timetable, each task force will report to the School Committee
about their proposed work. The three task forces are: -
Partnerships with academic
institutions and businesses
-
Virtual learning
opportunities
-
Expanded learning time
Each task force will have 8
to 12 members, and will include (at a minimum) 3 teachers, 2 administrators,
and 3 community members. At this
point in time, we are looking for representatives to serve on each of these
task forces.
Meetings will take place
monthly according to the following schedule:
Monday, October 26
Monday, November 23
Monday, December 14
Monday, January 11
Monday, March 1
All meetings are 3:30 --
5:30 PM.
Please consider joining one
of these task forces. If you are
interested in serving on a particular Task Force, please email the Task Force
Leader of your our interest by October 16, 2009.
Task Force on Partnerships:
This task force seeks to forge partnerships that will enhance professional
development, curriculum and program development, and in turn, the quality of
teaching and learning. Such
partnerships would foster a dynamic learning environment, as well as create
mechanisms through which NPS will more systematically hire and retain top
quality, diverse educators. We intend to investigate various partnerships with
local colleges, universities, businesses and organizations to rethink teacher
training and professional development programs in order to attract and maintain
a reliable pool of high quality, talented and diverse educators who are
equipped with the mindset and skills necessary to realize the NPS's mission of
developing students for a global age.
Please contact Joe Russo at joseph_russo@newton.k12.ma.us regarding the
Partnerships Taskforce.
Task Force on Virtual
Learning: The NPS as a Permeable
Campus Working Group (spring, 2009) has recommended that "NPS should expand and
explore online learning options for preK-12 students and the use of other online
resources." During the past eight
years, the Newton Public Schools' technology infrastructure (network, hardware,
software, and professional development) has expanded to take advantage of a
variety of online resources for students and teachers. Additionally, NPS has
begun to offer online courses in two ways. One is for teacher professional
development; the other is a blended learning opportunity for students. This task force will review these and
other online models in order to make recommendations regarding the future and potentially
expanded use of virtual learning in the Newton Public Schools. Please contact Shelley Chamberlain at
shelley_chamberlain@newton.k12.ma.us regarding the Virtual Learning Taskforce.
Task Force on Expanded
Learning Time (ELT). Quoting
liberally from the recommendation of the Permeable Campus Working Group: Expanded Learning Time (ELT) rethinks
and retools the traditional six-hour day/180 day school year. Today's students
are required to know and do more than previous generations to remain competitive
in our global economy. As we
strive to teach more and more content, the constraint is time, and we endeavor
to squeeze more and more into the school day. With ELT we treat time as "permeable;" it is a fundamental
restructuring of the school day/week/year to accommodate student learning. It may provide 1) more instructional
time in core subjects to support student achievement, 2) an opportunity to
integrate enrichment and applied learning opportunities into the school day;
and 3) more time for teachers to do common planning, engage in professional
development and collaborate with community based organizations. The task force will review the
potential of employing ELT in Newton, and make recommendations based on its
research. Please contact Paul Stein
at paul_stein@newton.k12.ma.us regarding the Extended Learning Time Taskforce.

Campaign for Cabot |
Stop waiting by your
mailbox! This year's Dollar-A-Day Campaign for Cabot will come to your email
address. (At least the first time around!) This annual fundraiser is the
largest source of funding for the PTO and was initiated at the suggestion of
many parents who preferred making a donation instead of engaging in numerous
and time-consuming PTO fundraising events. Please check your email the first
week of November to make your donation online and honor a special teacher
and/or staff member. Matching gifts are also welcome and a great way to
maximize your gift. Any questions, contact Julie Bourgoin at
