New CO2 Reduction Initiative:
The Newton Eco-Team Project

The Newton Eco-Team Project was established in the summer of 2009, as a local effort to reduce climate change and save energy.

Eco-Teams, groups of 5-8 people from different households, meet three or four times to work through a fun, easy-to-use workbook called The Low Carbon Diet, which shows, step-by-step, how to dramatically reduce CO2 output in just a month's time. You learn to:
  • Calculate your CO2 footprint with an easy-to-use online carbon calculator.
  • Create cool household systems that save the earth while saving you money.
  • Take on cool lifestyle practices to reduce CO2 emissions.
Form an Eco-Team with friends, neighbors, colleagues, or your faith community! With simple changes to actions you take every day, you'll learn how to reduce your annual household CO2 output by 25%.

Stand for Children's 2009 Survey of Local Candidates
This fall, Newton residents like you will decide the future direction of our city and schools. When we vote for Mayor, Board of Aldermen, and School Committee, our decisions affect many critical issues - including the hiring of a new school superintendent and implementation of the Newton Public Schools Strategic Plan.  For the first time in recent memory, the municipal ballot features numerous hotly contested races. To help you get informed, we surveyed all of the mayoral and contested school committee candidates.  Read the candidates' responses at www.stand.org/ma/2009NewtonCandidateSurvey  In this election, it is our responsibility as voters to learn about the candidates and make educated choices at the ballot box. The candidates' survey responses provide insight into their philosophies on education and plans for the future of Newton's schools.
