Laser Light Therapy: What's the Evidence? (Back To Health performs Laser Therapy for inflammation such as Tennis Elbow or Golfer's Elbow)
The last several years have brought a proliferation of
businesses offering "cold laser" or "light therapy". The ads in the newspapers and on the web
claim it can re-grow hair, eliminate wrinkles, help people quit smoking and
cure low back pain. There have also been
stories in the news about its ability to speed healing of wounds and even bone
fractures.
So what is it?
Low level light therapy (LLLT) typically uses
a probe that emits wavelengths of light, measured in nanomenters (n.m.) at
certain intensities. The probe is placed
on the skin over the affected area, usually for 30 -60 seconds at a time.
It is believed that the laser works by a
photochemical, rather than a heat related mechanism. The light waves are thought to increase the
production of ATP which is used by the cells for growth and repair.
Does it work? Thus far, the best research (i.e. significant
double -blind studies) has demonstrated that LLLT can speed healing and provide
pain relief of certain inflammatory conditions, including: Achilles tendonitis,
tennis and golfers elbow, ankle sprains, carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritis
and TMJ pain. There is also evidence that it speeds healing of flesh
wounds. In general it is more effective
if the treatment is administered soon after an injury occurs.
Studies for bone regeneration have shown
conflicting and inconclusive results and there is no good evidence supporting
LLLT as an effective treatment for chronic back or neck pain, smoking cessation
or wrinkles.
Despite mounting evidence of LLLT's effectiveness in
treating inflammatory conditions, it is still considered "experimental" by most
health insurers and they will not pay for it.
If you seek treatment, make sure it is administered by a licensed
practitioner, such as a physical therapist or chiropractor.

Tip:
When sitting and
reading for long periods without a desk, put a pillow or 2 on your lap and rest
the book there. This will help to keep your head upright, allow you to
relax your shoulders and avoid neck pain.
