Editor's Note
Links We Like
I spend an inordinate amount of time online. I get my news online, keep abreast of wellness trends, and maintain contact with friends and families that way. And, yeah, LOLing at Cute Overload.
This month, I wanted to highlight some of the more refreshing takes on wellness for our bodies and minds, our spiritual aspects, our famlies, our communities, and our world. Enjoy!

Stop Bill C-51! Amend Bill C-51! And, what the heck is Bill C-52?
In the last few weeks, those of us in the wellness industry have had our email in-boxes inundated with urgent calls to action regarding proposed legislation in the federal government. Introduced by the Harper Conservatives on April 8th, Bill C-51 aims to shake up things in the Natural Health Products (NHPs) industry. Depending on your source of information, the bill could be the end to your easy access to the natural products you know and love or it could simply add checks and balances to ensure that the products available to consumers are indeed safe and labelled correctly.
The speed with which the Bill was moving through the House of Commons was originally a cause for alarm. While there were reports that it had passed a Second Reading within weeks, the Bill now appears to have passed the First Reading only (you can keep up-to-date with the status of the Bill on the Parliament's website). The next Reading has apparently been re-scheduled for the Fall. Which gives everyone time to get organized and get out there.
A recent Health Canada survey tells us that 71% of Canadians regularly use vitamins, minerals, herbs and other NHPs. And we know from recent history - the original threat to NHPs in 1998 - that Canadian consumers can have a loud and positive impact on the way the government regulates our health products.
Look beyond the hype. Find reliable sources of information, and do your research. Then take appropriate action. These will get you started:
A Toronto Star editorial has weighed in on the pro side.
A nicely balanced view is offered by Canadian Health Food Association, who urge the government to make a separate category for NHPs. On their website you can find links to a Backgrounder on the Bill, FAQ, a Grassroots Advocacy Kit, and sample letters you can send to your MP.
Stop C-51 has a more urgent - and possibly more extreme - message. On the site, you can link to the Bill itself, sign an online petition, and read a legal review by Shawn Buckley, LLB and President of NHPPA (Natural Health Products Protection Association).
On the other side of the coin, eSkeptic takes issue with the founders of the Stop C-51 website in "A Triumph of Astroturf? How a consumer protection law may be defeated by a faux consumer watchdog campaign"
The Natural Health Products Directorate is the branch of Health Canada responsible for regulating NHPs since January 1, 2004. Find out what they're doing right now.
A couple of articles to round out your reading:
"Consumer Alert: Opposition Grows to Bill C-51" from Vitality Magazine
"Opinion: Bill C-51" from Health Action Network Society
