Pittcon Honors Scientists from Academia and Industry for Their contributions to the Advancement of Science |
Pittsburgh, PA, December 3, 2008 - Pittcon announced the recipients of 11 prestigious awards recognizing the significant contributions of leaders in the fields of Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy. The awards will be presented at Pittcon, March 8-13, 2009, McCormick Place, Chicago, Illinois. Each award is presented during a symposium honoring the recipient and his/her achievements. The awardees represent diverse scientific disciplines including separations science, pharmaceuticals, bioanalytical science, vibrational spectroscopy, chromatography, electrochemistry, microfluidics, and sensors.  The 2009 Pittcon Heritage Award will be presented to Alfred R. Bader, Founder of Aldrich Chemical Company ((now Sigma-Aldrich), owner of Alfred Bader Fine Arts. The award will be presented in the Opening Session, which begins at 4:30 p.m. on March 8, immediately followed by the Plenary Lecture, "Paper Diagnostics-Using First World Science in Developing Economies", presented by George M. Whitesides, Woodford L. and Ann A. Flowers University Professor, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Harvard University.
The subsequent awards and recipients are as follows:
- Analytical Chemistry Award for Young Investigators in Separation Science, Nelson Torto, University of Botswana
- Bomem-Michelson Award - Martin Quack, Laboratium fur Physikalische Chemie
- Charles N. Reilley Award - Charles R. Martin, University of Florida
- Chromatography Forum of Delaware Valley Dal Nogare Award - Frantisek Svec, University of California, Berkeley
- Maurice F. Hasler Award - Gary M. Hieftje, Indiana University
- Pittsburgh Analytical Chemistry Award - Chad A. Mirkin, Northwestern University
- The Pittsburgh Conference Achievement Award - Daniel T. Chiu, University of Washington
- Pittsburgh Spectroscopy Award - Ira W. Levin, NIH Division of Intramural Research in the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases
- The Ralph N. Adams Award - Graham Cooks, Purdue University
- Williams-Wright Award - Jerome J. Workman, Jr., Luminous Medical Inc.
