The DRAWING BOARD
Quarterly Art Update
Fall 2009
Greetings!
This summer, I forsook my studio--but did paint on walls and sidewalks.  I also hosted a week-long girl's art studio, visited Crater Lake and the Ashland Shakespeare Festival, participated in a live Murder Mystery, judged the FPS International Conference in Michigan, made lots of soup, read about thirty young adult novels, completed the 100-push-up challenge, and acquired two cats.  Which is the way summer seems to pass in Portland, with zest and speed (and the tiniest bit of guilt.)  Now I lean into September and its creative momentum: don't forget to buy your new crayons!

Rain Stomper UPDATE
Jazmin finds the summer somewhat...dry.  But she is still jumping off bookshelves and inspiring small children to say BOOM repeatedly.  And I am anticipating the 5000 mark (books sold) and my very first royalty check.  More FREE events this fall!

To Blog or Not to Blog?
I would like to post The Drawing Board more frequently, to tell about my current projects and life's daily inspirations.  I was all ready to start when I read this article about the blog graveyard.  It reminded me of my own wasteland of lost projects.  So, to blog or not to blog?  Do you have experience blogging?  What would entice you to read?  I would love your feedback.
Coming Up
Brazil photo2010's biggest plan leads south, to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  For over a year, I have been covertly writing a young adult novel.  With the first draft done, this winter I'll be learning Portuguese, writing grants for a residency abroad, and fantasizing about tropical places.

Book Teaser, FLY:
Fifteen-year-old Carlos has left a hazy and violent past for the freedom of Rio de Janeiro's streets.  Though "the street has no boss," a loosely-organized group of friends share their earnings and function as his only family.  They spend their days escaping a variety of threats, including drug lords, Juvenile Hall, and the mythologized death squad called the Borde.  But Carlos has more pressing concerns: to save Serena (the girl he's obsessed with) from Rafi (his archenemy), and convince Paolo (his best friend) to keep a dangerous secret.  As problems mount, Carlos begins to discover his own strength and the unique gift that may just save his life.  The two friends hatch an improbable escape from essa vita (that life): they take to their feet and fly.
