Quarterly Art Update

Summer 2009

Greetings!
To jump-start our literary routine, my partner and I agreed to a Writing Challenge: 1000 words a day--every day--in April. This regimen is a popular standard among authors, equaling about 2 1/2 pages of single-spaced text. At month's end, thousands of words richer, the biggest gain was this realization: writing 1000 words is not hard. Sitting down and writing the first ten is. Discipline is a daily monster; reinforcements (and coercions) help. One I found recently: Stephen King's excellent memoir On Writing. His regimen? Four to six hours of reading and/or writing a day, and, oh hell... 2000 words. Back to the drawing board.

Summer is a playful season. The studio pushes against the laptop, and the sun wins every argument. But there are always projects around the bend. Next time, I'll report on a new and improved illustration portfolio. And it's about time for another art show: here is a preview of my current paintings, all about Iowa and solitude.
