When will your "someday" happen?
|
Greetings!,
Being a packrat has its ups and its downs. One of the downs is that it makes for a lot of clutter. Periodically I sort by picking up piles and moving them from here to there. But there always comes a point when it gets to be too much, even for me.
Like several weeks ago when I tried to find an article I'd been saving about a woman who celebrated turning 60 by starting college. A Quest Making woman! I wanted to learn more about her! Where the heck was that article?
"Always comes a point " had arrived. It was time not only to sort, but also toss and find. I rolled up my sleeves, created a new Pandora channel(Elvis Presley) and cranked up the volume.
[If you haven't discovered Pandora, may I introduce you? Click here to meet your personal guide to the wide world of music via your computer. No turntable, CD player or iPod required.
No inane DJ chatter. No endless commercials. And it's free!]
However, I digress. . .
As I rocked, rolled, emptied shelves and upended files, my office floor morphed into a sea of paper, folders and books. SUCCESS: I found the article! Re-reading it, I was inspired all over again. At 60, Jane had decided "someday" was not soon enough to set out on her quest. In this month's interview, she fills you in on where her path has taken her 18 months later.
Oh,
and one of the ups of being a packrat? This now very clean and spare
office was crying out for whimsy, yet where to find it? In the treasured objects and toys I'd packed and saved for a time
just like this! Take a peek. PS. Jane loves the hellebore, also known as Lenten rose.
"Mine are flowering now and they are almost tropical looking. They are not your typical spring flower, and I am not a typical retiree! I think that is why I like them so much."

Meet Quest Maker Jane Gifun
|
I "met" Jane Gifun in July 2008 on the front page of the regional section in The Boston Globe. In the article, "Late Shift" she and several women, inspired by longtime passions, were enrolled in college and/or had embarked on new careers just when many women in their late 50s and early 60s were thinking of retirement.
So much has happened to Jane since then. She will graduate in May 2011 with a degree in early childhood. And right now, she is amazingly happy working full time with special needs children, a passion she has maintained since her high school days. As she told me:
"If
I kept
putting off the decision to work with special needs kids, I would be 90 years
old and still saying SOMEDAY."
