Exploring the margins
|
Greetings!,
In this month when we set aside a day to give thanks, my heart teems with gratitude. Thank you for allowing Your Next Quest Chronicles into your lives. For letting me introduce you to a different Quest Maker each month, someone like ourselves, who has set out on her own personal journey. For letting me share my thoughts in my essays and in the Journal Sparkers, as I - like you - follow my own quest one next step at a time. For me, it's all about connections. Everything. Like a spider weaving its web, one filament at a time, each strand connects to the other. Like a community, weaving itself together with strands of sustenance, of support and friendship. Like the community that has grown in Central Vermont around a place called Green Mountain Girls' Farm in Northfield. It is where this month's Quest Maker Mari Omland and her partner Laura Olsen have set down roots, opening their hearts to the earth, to their animals, to their neighbors. In a mid-life move, they sought community. With the farm, they've created it. Light has to illuminate a web in just the right way for its tensile gossamer to be made visible. So too, in our own lives. Sometimes we don't know where connections will lead us. We may learn that who we are or what our strengths are may exist outside of all our expectations - in the margins between the filaments. For Mari, it's in those margins where the richness of our quest waits to be explored. It's where the wellspring of creativity and ambiguity meet. PS. Mari's favorite flower is the purple cone flower.

Meet Quest Maker Mari Omland
|
In her early 40s, several young friends of Mari Omland's died and she was laid off from her high-powered job in D.C. Mari likens these life events to throwing a stick into a moving bicycle tire. It made her stop. That's when she reassessed what mattered to her and made the move home to Vermont and life as a farmer. At Green Mountain Girls' Farm in the heart of Central Vermont, she and Laura, her life partner, raise healthy (organic and sustainable), happy (free range and loved) animals and vegetables. In addition to raising tasty, organic food and meat, their Barn Guesthouse provides a respite for guests where they can experience a bit of farm life, or just relax and have fun on the trails and in the pond.
