Who does she think she is to spend so much time painting, acting, sculpting, filming, writing?
Who does she think she is to put herself first?
Do these questions make you cringe as they did many of the women in the audience as we viewed
Pamela Tanner Boll's documentary
Who Does She Think She Is? To realize that people still ask them makes my heart ache. In the film, five women - all artists and mothers - invite us into their lives as they do what is right for them.
What struck me was how hard it can be to stay on one's true path, just like it has been for these artists who refuse to choose only to be
a mother or only to be an artist. Let's be clear, though. This is a
struggle any woman who fulfills other family roles must face when she takes
time to pursue her quest.
In an observation
that gives the film its name,
Tiffany Schlain, film maker and artist,
gets to the nub: "A lot of people are, sure,
who does she think she is? But you know, when you succeed at it, you can smile and say, 'Yes, that's who I am!"
At
heart, are we not all artists? Don't we craft our own lives by the
choices we make and the steps we take to pursue our quests to be our real and truest selves? September's Quest Maker
Camille Saunders Musser, one of the
artists profiled in this riveting documentary, shares her own
journey with us.
So, who do I think I am? I have learned I am a writer and a storyteller. With the September issue,
Your Next Quest Chronicles
completes its first year of
publication. (I'm pinching myself as I write that sentence!) This year eleven incredible, feisty creative and vibrant women told me their personal stories which I couldn't wait to share with you each month.
Fueling
me, then and now, has been a deep curiosity to discover what
motivates women to achieve their dreams. What sustains these Quest
Makers as they travel on what often can be a lonely path? What compels
them to claim their inner realms? Along
the way, you've joined me, one
story at a time.
My hope? To inspire you to take the next step on your
own journey so that when someone asks: "Who do you think you are?"
you can think of your quest with growing confidence and declare with a smile, "Yes, that's who I am!"

PS When I asked Camille for her favorite flower, she replied: "There is
no easy answer to this question since I am a huge flower lover. When I
am in St. Vincent, it is the hibiscus and when I am in New England it is
the day lily. Any color!" . . .and so I share them both with you!
