BRAIN TEASER #2
"The Bulbs and Switches"

Consider this :

There are three switches downstairs.

Each corresponds to one of the three light bulbs in the attic.

You can turn the switches on and off and leave them in any position.

How would you identify which switch corresponds to which light bulb, if you are only allowed one trip upstairs?

BSP AWARDED POSITION 1521 ON THE
2009 INC. 5000 LIST
Inc. 500 | 5000BSP honored on the annual list of the fastest-growing private companies in America!

In our first year of eligibility, BSP has received the distinguished Inc. 5000 ranking, which was officially released on August 12th.  This achievement puts us in rarefied company, as members of this elite group include companies such as Microsoft, Timberland, Intuit, Jamba Juice, Oracle, and UnderArmour.

In fact, many of today's most successful U.S. companies received their first national recognition when they appeared on the Inc. list.

We thank each and every one of our customers and prospective customers for affording us this truly humbling honor, and we look forward to many successful years to come partnering with you to make a difference!
ANOTHER REFERENCEABLE CUSTOMER
PartnershipFeaturing BSP Developer Dave Munson

Our BSP Software division recently resolved an issue that a Cognos customer was having with an older SDK application.  After upgrading to a newer version of Cognos, the SDK code was no longer working.  The problem had been escalated high within the Cognos organization and was consuming a great deal of everyone's time, energy, and attention.  BSP Software was contacted and spent several hours evaluating the existing SDK application.  Thanks to the development framework and deep knowledge within our organization, we were able to solve the issue with a bit of custom coding.  In addition to getting the customer up and running quickly, we also improved the overall functionality and supportability of the application for them.   BSP wishes to acknowledge and thank Dave Munson for resolving this issue and for providing a more robust and more integrated solution for this customer.

If you are facing this or a similar situation, or investigating how to solve a particular pain point you're having within your Cognos environment, please reach out to Neil Morgan at nmorgan@brightstarpartners.com.

IBM Go! DASHBOARD MULTI-SERVER INSTALL
IBM Cognos TechnologyBy Nipun Gupta, Consultant

This month's technique explains how you can install IBM Go! Dashboard on a multi-server environment.  It is assumed that you have IBM Cognos 8v4 installed in a multi-server environment with the Gateway installed on one server (Server_GW) and the Dispatcher installed on a different server (Server_BI).

Follow the steps below.

Ensure that IBM Cognos 8v4 BI is correctly configured and running on Server_BI.

Install IBM Go! Dashboard component on Server_GW

Configure IBM Go! Dashboard.

Configure Tomcat6 on Server_GW

Navigate to http://MachineName:Port/cognos/dashboard/html and make sure IBM Go! Dashboard user interface is working properly and public folders are visible in the hierarchical tree.

Even though IBM Go! Dashboard recognizes Cognos 8 BI and displays the content within the Content Store, Cognos 8 BI is still unaware of the existence of Go! Dashboard.  We will need to install Go! Dashboard on Server_BI too.  Since Go! Dashboard is already configured with the Dispatcher it's supposed to use, we only need to install Go! Dashboard on Server_BI with no need to configure it.  This will provide a link between the BI server and Go! Dashboard server.

Another issue that might arise when running Go! Dashboard is multiple logins to Go! Dashboard even though the user is already logged into Cognos Connection.

To resolve this issue, we're going to need to adjust the cache settings in Cognos Configuration.

  • DID YOU KNOW...
    SpeedThese Speed-related facts......

    • This month's 'Did You Know' section has been sent to us by a reader who got slapped with a hefty speeding ticket fine and decided to research the speeding facts below.
    • You can also send us your contributions to this section.
    • Over 100,000 people a day receive a speeding ticket in this country.  That's over 410,000,000 speeding tickets per year.
    • One in every 6 drivers will get a speeding ticket this year.
    • The average speeding ticket costs $150.00.
      41,000,000 x 150.00 = $6,150,000,000.  That's over 6 BILLION dollars per year in speeding ticket fines alone.
    • The average raise in insurance costs for one speeding ticket over the course of 3 years is $900.00.  Multiply 900 by 41,000,000 and you get $36,900,000,000 (36.9 BILLION dollars) in extra insurance money the insurance industry makes in a single year just from speeding tickets.
    • Over 95% of people who receive a speeding ticket never contest it and just pay the fine.  The other 5% who make an effort to fight their ticket usually have their case dismissed or receive reduced charges that don't get reported on their driving record.
    • There are about 196,000,000 licensed drivers in America today.
    • Paradise Valley, Arizona, in 1987 became the first town in America to use photo radar.
    • The age groups between 17 and 24 years of age receive the most speeding tickets.
    • More men than women receive speeding tickets.
More women fight their speeding tickets than men.
    • Seventeen year old drivers are more likely to be involved in an accident than any other age group.
    • In July 1879, two men are fined for speeding  in Seattle while riding horses.
    • Traffic lights were used before the advent of the motorcar.  In 1868, a lantern with red and green signals was used at a London intersection to control the flow of horse buggies and pedestrians.
    • The earliest known speeding ticket on file was issued in 1910 to the Prime Minister of Canada's wife.  She was traveling at a whopping 10 mph over the limit.
    • Doctors receive more speeding tickets than any other profession.
    • The average traffic cop will cost a city about $75,000 per year in salary, bonuses, and benefits. This same police officer will make the city an average of $200,000 per year in traffic ticket fines! That's one hefty profit margin.
    • In North Carolina, 1 person is killed or injured in speed-related crashes every 22 minutes.
    • A driver is 6 times more likely to have an accident when traveling at 25% above the average speed (examples: 44/35 mph zone; 69/55 mph zone; 88/70 mph zone).
