SQL Server Duplicate Insert Errors with Bulk Insert
- Contributed by Tom Tesar, Senior Consultant -
Have you ever faced a situation when you are trying to bulk copy a huge number of records into a SQL server 2005 table and you keep getting a duplicate insert error?
The cause of the error most probably is:
- The target table has a unique key constraint enabled.
- The source table is violating the unique key constraint of the target table.
The above conclusion is quite simple to draw. The problem is that you will need to solve this before the bulk copy can succeed. The task can be even more challenging if the source also had unique key constraint implemented and apparently all rows in the source column were also unique as per the unique key constraint of the source table. The reason we are getting the error is that the unique key constraint of the target table is being violated and that could be different from the unique key constraint of the source table. The following SQL will help you to quickly find the rows that are responsible for the error.
SELECT <table>.* FROM
(SELECT COUNT(*) AS COUNT, <Key column(s)>
FROM <table> GROUP BY <Key columns(s)> HAVING COUNT(*) > 1) A
INNER JOIN <table>
ON <table>.<key columns(s) > = A.<key columns>
Where
<table> is the source table.
<Key column(s)> are all the key columns of the target table.
