 G'day Everyone,

Yep, things are still churning away here in the world of DirtWise - so far we have conducted 40 schools during 2011, and nearly all of those were sold out! We have now been able to confirm the remaining 14 schools of our 2011 schedule, plus post up our tentative 2012 schedule for January and February. Be sure to check it out and sign up quickly if you're interested in a school in your area because these schools have been selling out fast all year long!!!!!

Also, it's coming around to that time of the year where we start preparing to organize and finalize the majority of the DirtWise Riding school schedule for the upcoming year. We've had quite a few interested parties already contact us about conducting a school in their region of the USA/Canada (or world!!!) and at least some of those new venues will be included in our 2012 schedule. So now's the time to speak up and hopefully we can satisfy your request but remember though that there are only so many weekends in the year for us to do these schools - as an example the landowners from this year's schools in Amarillo, TX, Michigan, and Virginia (all great locations!) first contacted us nearly two years ago about possibily doing a DirtWise class in their area! Please email us to receive a run down of the criteria we look for at an appropriate venue.

10 Rules for Trail Riding

Every month we include a Riding tip in the Thumpertalk.com Newsletter, so following my recent single tracking adventures through the rugged mountains of Idaho I thought that it would be appropriate to list my "Ten Rules of Trailriding" in this month's edition. Check them out below and if you have a good rule of your own please email it to us at dirtwise@shanewatts.com  by Sept 15. The best "Trail Rule" we receive will win a free copy of the original DirtWise Instructional DVD. Here they are:

  1. Have a designated trail boss (who actually knows where he is going!) and follow that person, or at least make ride decisions as a group and adhere to them.
  2. Do a head count of riders BEFORE you start the ride.
  3. When you get to a trail intersection the lead rider continues on while the second rider of the group waits there and directs the following riders until all riders have passed or the designated sweep rider arrives - no exceptions on that one!
  4. Always try to remain as a group (safety in numbers), but if a rider does need to call it early for whatever reason make sure they truly do know how to find their way back or are accompanied by at least one other rider.
  5. Fill your bike's fuel tank up ALL the way to the top before the ride and at any gas stops during the ride. Remember now that the only time you can have too much fuel is when you are on fire!
  6. Packing a light Gore-Tex type rain jacket can be a savior especially in the high country where the weather can change from pleasant to extremely nasty real quick, and don't forget to also include some poo-tickets in a zip lock bag in case nature calls - it sucks having to ride the rest of the day after sacrificing a sock for clean up!!!
  7. Take a camera/helmet-cam to take some happy snaps and document any worthwhile moments, good or bad. At some stage in the future you will be glad that you did!
  8. Carry all of the equipment and tools to perform a trail side puncture repair, or better still get your mate to carry it for you - a 21 inch tube will work much better for both wheels than an 18 inch tube.
  9. Same goes if you drown out in a river crossing. Have one of your mates wring out the airfilter for you so as they get the greasy, oily residue on their hands.
  10. If there is a large puddle or small creek crossing on the trail  try and line it up so as you roost past your mate on the back wheel just before the water. The resulting splash and drenching is worth bonus points for the after-ride bullshit session!!!

Epic Video of the Month

There are so many awesome videos out there in cyber space on places like YouTube etc, but this one caught our attention for some pretty sick riding skills. Thanks to our good mate Danny Pressley for forwarding it over!

Motorcycle USA Articleoregon school 2011

This weekend we are heading back to Oregon for another DirtWise school at the sensational Rock Hill Recreation venue, near Albany, where we have conducted quite a few schools during the past couple of years. Check out the report/review (and more so the epic pics and video of moto-heaven) that our other good mate Brian Chamberlain posted up on the www.Motorcycle-USA.com site from our school there earlier this year in May.

The temperature is going to be a little on the warmer side there this weekend but I'm still hanging to get back there and ride those trails. If you're ever in that area on a Saturday when they're open for business (Ph. 541 9792655) make sure that you go spend a few hours out there and roost around.

Well that's about it guys and girls for another month. Thanks heaps to all of you for your great support and hopefully you all get the opportunity to keep on roosting!
