Hello,
This is the June newsletter for Jen Grisanti Consultancy.
It's been an incredible month. It's nice to start seeing the results of a lot of work coming to fruition. Over the past four months since I launched, I've been working with over 50 writers. From this group five people have signed with managers from scripts we've worked on, two have signed with new agents, three have staffed on Current shows, I helped two to get jobs as writer's assistants and four have entered the television writer programs. Several have moved to the next level in screen writing competitions and I have producers who want to move forward with three people. I have several more pending situations. My favorite part of the process is not only seeing the growth but seeing when the work brings opportunity.
My process is to get to the core of what a writer wants to say. I have a more spiritual approach to writing. I believe in helping people move past their fear and nurturing them so that they can get their story on the page. Writing is the greatest opportunity to reflect on life moments. It's about motivation. It's about really wanting to do the work in order to see the results.
If you feel that you want to take the next step in your career by elevating your material, having your material assessed, having someone there to hear your story ideas and to help guide you in your process, please take a look at my website at www.jengrisanticonsultancy.com and let me know how I can help you get where you want to be.
HELPFUL WEBSITES FOR WRITERS, EXECUTIVES, AGENTS AND MANAGERS
A great website for writers who can't find a script for the current show they're writing is
www.scriptcity.com. You can buy scripts on this site. They also have a large selection of feature scripts.
Want to research the synopses of Currents shows you're writing? Check out www.televisionwithoutpity.com. This is a great site to get caught up on what happened on your current show so that you make sure you don't repeat storylines. Their recaps and weecaps are entertaining and informative.
Want to watch actual episodes of shows you missed? Check out www.hulu.com. This is the greatest research tool for everyone. Executives who get spec scripts and haven't watched the show before can get tremendous value out of this.
I have to do a shout out to Michael Patrick King for his great work on SEX AND THE CITY. I went with a group of 10 women and we had a blast! We loved every minute of it! It was incredible to leave the theater feeling completely fulfilled.
GREAT PROFESSIONAL BOOK
My pick for a great professional book this month is;
WRITE TO TV written by Martie Cook.
In researching all the material that is out there for my upcoming seminar, I found this book to be extremely informative and very well written. It gives you everything you need to know to get started with a career in television.
NON-FICTION BOOK
I find that there are so many great spiritual books out there that help in leading a balanced life.
My favorite one this month is;
On Becoming Fearless by Arianna Huffington
The writing in this book is excellent! I love this book. I believe every woman should read this book but there is something in it for everyone. It deals with so many prevalent life issues. It is about the value of self acceptance. It is a great gift. Your friends will love you!
NEED TO NETWORK?
Networking is everything in our business. It is such an important part of the process of getting hired.
As many of you know, I have a networking night the first Friday of every month for entertainment professionals at the X Bar in the Century Plaza Hotel. It is located at 2025 Ave. of the Stars. The X Bar is an incredible venue. They have a beautiful restaurant as well as an outside patio with a ton of seating. It is a great ambiance to meet people. Usually, 125 -150 show up on average each month. I've heard many stories about new opportunities including staffing, pitching and signing with new representation come out of this event.
The next one is on Friday, August 1, 2008. It starts at 7:00 p.m. and goes to 11:00 p.m. If you know someone who would benefit from this, please have them e-mail me at jennifer@jengrisanticonsultancy.com and I will add them to the evite list. I also have the event listed on Facebook.
HOT HEALTHY SPOT
Do you enjoy healthy food? If so, I have a great spot for you!
Bloom
5544 Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90019 (323) 934-6900
I had very high expectations when I went to this place. It exceeded my expectations! My favorite salads there are the Bloom Summer Salad and the Indian Delight Quinoa Salad. My favorite entree is the Vegetarian Curry Bowl with wehanii brown rice. It is DELICIOUS! They also have incredible pizzas and amazing breakfasts. Dessert wise, you have to try the Chocolate Walnut Tart!
NEW TESTIMONIALS
If you're looking for someone to e-mail you comments about how you should "start the action sooner" or "raise the stakes", Jen is definitely not your gal. No, instead, she's going to pull you into discussions about your intent, your choices, the direction of the script and its pitfalls. Then, she's going to take everything you talked about and write it up so that you have it nearby when you go back for another pass at your material. And like any fine and thoughtful editor, Jen is also a bit of a life coach which helps you tune out the noise of this town and write honestly.
Dana Calvo - Television writer
Greek, Journeyman, Studio 60
Jen combines her passion for story with an astute understanding of what makes a story relateable. Nothing gets by her -- whether it's a question of character development, theme, or major story beats, her suggestions are spot on and have helped me realize each script more completely, I trust her instincts implicitly.
Jude Roth - Feature Writer
COMING SOON
I will be doing my first seminar in September. I will keep you posted on the details. It will be a one day seminar geared towards getting information out about story to television and feature writers from the studio executive/story analyst point of view. The goal is to help writers and directors to be better prepared for what to expect in the creative process as well is to inform them about what they need to help them get the job.
QUOTE OF THE MONTH
Those who never take risks can only see other people's failures. - Eleven Minutes
Have a GREAT month!
Warmest regards,
Jen
