Construction begins on Evergreen Fairgrounds' event center

Events Center Ground Breaking

Exec. Aaron Reardon, Councilmen Dave Somers and Dave Gossett, Dep. Exec. Gary Haakenson and Fair Advisory Board members dig the first shovel for the new events center building.

Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon, County Council Chairman Dave Somers, Fair and Park Board members, 4-H and FFA members and interested citizens celebrated the start of construction Jan. 28 on the Evergreen State Fairground's new multipurpose event center.

The new event center replaces the old rabbit/poultry and dog barns, which were built in 1948. Slated to be constructed by June, the building will host a variety of events - including craft shows, animal shows, conventions, concerts and trade shows - outside of the 12-day fair when it will showcase dogs, rabbits, cavies, waterfowl and poultry.

Event Center Building Concept
The building was financed with federal recovery zone economic development bonds. Faber Brothers Construction Co. of Lynden won the contract. "We have invested significant funds at the fairgrounds during the past seven years, including major renovations to the Equestrian Park, but this multipurpose event center will create new opportunities at the fairgrounds," Reardon said. "This will generate more year-round income for the fairgrounds while creating economic opportunities for the surrounding community."

To book an event at the new building, call the fair office at 360-805-6700. The Evergreen State Fairgrounds are located at 14405 179th Ave. NE, Monroe.

Coordinator Marcie Allen retires

Marcie Allen retired Dec. 31, 2010, with 25 years of service to Snohomish County. Marcie began her career with Snohomish County in the Information Services Department and transferred to Parks & Recreation as the administrative secretary, working her way up to marketing and network administrator.

Marcie and her husband, Paul, are planning a few special trips later this year. Marcie is looking forward to spending more time giving back to the community and competing in the Evergreen State Fair's gardening, photography, sewing, baking and food preservation departments. She will continue to volunteer as the Fair's Open Class Agriculture Department Superintendent. In addition to experiencing anything new, Marcie loves to fly in small planes, helicopters and balloons (and occasionally jump out of them)!

Marcie is returning to the Parks Department part time in February to edit the web page and create this e-newsletter.
