Tips for Preventing Heat-Related Illness
The best defense is prevention
Here are some prevention tips: * Drink more fluids (nonalcoholic), regardless of your
activity level.
* Don't wait until you're thirsty to drink. * Avoid liquids that contain alcohol or large amounts of
sugar. These actually cause you to lose more body
fluid.
* Avoid very cold drinks because they can cause
stomach cramps. * Stay indoors and, if at all possible, stay in an air-
conditioned place. If your home does not have air
conditioning, go to the shopping mall or public library.
Even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help
your body stay cooler when you go back into the
heat. * Electric fans may provide comfort, but when the
temperature is in the high 90s, fans will not prevent
heat-related illness.
* Take a cool shower or bath. * Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. * NEVER leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle. If you must be out in the heat: * Limit your outdoor activity to morning and evening
hours. * Cut down on exercise. * Try to rest often in shady areas. * Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-
brimmed hat (also keeps you cooler), sunglasses
and sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher.

Lakewood Road Improvement Project may delay entering Lake Goodwin County Park
Snohomish County Public Works will begin construction of a traffic safety project on Lakewood Road in August. The project will add left turn pockets on Lakewood Road at two intersections: East Lake Goodwin Road and West Lake Goodwin Road. between Frank Waters Road and E. Lake Goodwin Road. Five-foot walkable shoulders will be added along both sides of Lakewood Road to improve conditions for pedestrians and bicyclists.
Construction is planned for 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Fridays during the summer. Work will likely stop for the winter and resume early next year. Projected completion date is spring 2010. During construction, park visitors may experience delays while entering or exiting Lake Goodwin County Park.
Thank you for your patience as we work on this safety improvement project. For more information about the project, visit the county's Web page: www.snoco.org or contact Tina Hokanson, Public Works Communication Specialist at 425-388-3789 or email tina.hokanson@snoco.org.
