Safe & Sane Fireworks
We agree there's something magical about the Fourth of July. It's a red, white and blue holiday in brilliant Technicolor, jam-packed with family picnics, softball and sunshine--capped off by spectacular fireworks. It just wouldn't be the Fourth without the fireworks in a "big bang" show of American patriotism.

What's not to love?

Your Snohomish County Parks & Recreation Department reminds you that private fireworks are illegal in all county parks. Consider attending one of the many community-based fireworks shows (produced by professionals) instead of an amateur backyard extravaganza. The grandeur of a professional show simply cannot be duplicated in your backyard.

Thankfully, Snohomish County is loaded with opportunities to view professional shows. Close to home, the sky will be illuminated with community firework displays.

Wenberg State Park becomes Wenberg County Park on July 16th

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission will turn Wenberg State Park over to Snohomish County Parks operations beginning July 16, in an effort to keep parks open and available to citizens while responding to state budget reductions. The transfer of the park will be marked by a ceremony at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 16, the first day of county operations. State Parks and Snohomish County officials will be on hand for the event, and the public is invited to attend.

Originally a Snohomish County park of 20.75 acres, the state received the property in 1947 on a quitclaim deed. The park grew with acquisitions from the Wenberg Public Park Association and private individuals. Wenberg has 45 standard (tent) campsites, 30 water and electricity utility sites, three American with Disabilities Act-approved campsites with hookups and a utility camp host campsite. The park also includes a bathhouse, two camp-area comfort stations, two picnic shelters, 465 feet of swim beach,  1,140 feet of freshwater shoreline, a concession stand and a two-lane concrete boat launch.

The park is located 10 miles south of Stanwood at 15430 E. Lake Goodwin Road, Stanwood, WA 98292. Find more information on the County Parks Website at www.snocoparks.org or the State Park Website at www.parks.wa.gov.

Acreage added to Lord Hill Regional Park
Snohomish County Council recently completed the purchase of 7.2 acres near the entrance to Lord Hill Regional County Park for equestrian parking. The new parcel will provide approximately 20 new parking stalls for horse trailers, twice as many as currently exists. This new access point for equestrians will avoid three bridge crossings currently located near the park entry and provides for an easier trail access into the park for other park patrons.

"The county has been eyeing the parcel for almost two decades and we appreciate that the owners agreed to sell the property for an addition to the park," said Parks Director Tom Teigen. The new area for equestrian parking should be ready this summer.

The park is south of Snohomish and west of Monroe with the main entrance on 12921 150th St. SE. Access to the new parcel is from 127th Avenue SE. It has more than six miles of trails for hiking, biking and equestrian use with panoramic views of the Snohomish River Valley and mountain ranges.

Safe swimming
Did you know that many families with young children plan on enjoying water fun this summer, and half of those families plan to swim in an area with no lifeguard on duty?
The Red Cross recommends adults should constantly supervise children no matter how well they can swim, how shallow the water is or whether there are lifeguards.
Always practice safe habits in and around the water and swim with a buddy in a supervised area; know how and when to call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number.
If someone is missing, check the water first. If a swimmer is in the water and needs help, reach or throw something out to him or her - do not go in unless you are trained.
Make sure everyone in your family learns to swim well. Enroll in age-appropriate Red Cross water orientation and learn-to-swim courses, as well as first aid and CPR courses to learn what to do.
Never leave a young child unattended near water and do not trust a child's life to another child; teach children to always ask permission to go near water.
Have young children or inexperienced swimmers wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets around water, but do not rely on life jackets alone.
The McCollum Park Pool offers swim lessons for kids of all ages, starting with parent and child water orientation classes for children as young as 9 months to about 3 years old, preschool lessons for children about 4-5 years old, and learn-to-swim lessons for children about age 6 through adults. For more details, visit www.snocoparks.org.

Campfire Recipes

Camp Grilled Chicken Fajitas
· 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into strips
· 1 pkt fajitas seasoning
· 1 green pepper, remove seeds, cut into strips
· 1 red pepper, remove seeds, cut into strips
· 1 med onion, cut into strips
· 1 large tomato, cut into slices
· shredded cheese
· 6 tortillas
· 6 bamboo skewers
Toppings:  Sourcream, Salsa, Guacamole

In large bowl, pour 3 cups of water and fajitas seasoning packet; mix well. Dump the chicken strips in the seasoning marinate. Let marinate in refrigerator or cooler for about 5 hours.
Half hour to 45 mins before marinating is done, jump start your bbq grill.
Thread chicken, peppers, onion, tomato on skewers (at least 3 each chicken strips, peppers strips, onion strips, & tomato slices per skewer).
When grill is ready, lay the prepared skewers on the grill. Let cook for about 15 minutes, turn over, cook another 15 minutes or until chicken is done.
When done, slide the ingredients off the skewer onto a tortilla. Top with sour cream, cheese, guacamole, and salsa.  Enjoy!

Pudgy Pies
· Bread
· Butter
· Cherry Pie filling (or your favorite filling)
Butter two slices of bread. Place buttered side against the iron side of a metal sandwich maker. Fill with pie filling. Close sandwich maker and hold over the fire (not too close, or your butter will burn). Check on regularly for doneness.
