Fund-raiser Results
Your Snohomish County Park Department's 5th Annual Murder Mystery Dinner and Silent Auction raised $2,759 benefitting the Sultan, Sky Valley and Maltby food banks. The funds give the food banks purchasing power for more than 24,000 pounds of food to help those needing assistance.

We sincerely thank all those who so generously participated in this very worthy event.

APRIL HEALTH TIP

BANANAS
The expression "going bananas" comes from the effect bananas has on the brain. After reading this, you'll never look at a banana the same way again.

Bananas contain three natural sugars (sucrose, fructose and glucose) combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.

Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.

But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions (depression, PMS,
anemia, blood pressure, constipation, hangovers, heartburn,
mosquito bites, nerves, ulcers, seasonal affective disorder, smoking cessation, stress relief, warts, etc.).

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrates, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around. (Maybe it's time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, "A banana a day keeps the doctor away!")

And, here's one more: To give your shoes a quick shine, rub the INSIDE of the banana skin directly on the shoe...polish with dry cloth.

And, of course, it also tastes good!

County opens Yurt Village at River Meadows Park
Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon and other community leaders celebrated the opening of the new Yurt Village at River Meadows County Park on March 25.

River Meadows Park is located four miles northeast of Arlington on the Stillaguamish River off Jordan Road. It has been a county park since 1972 and is built on what was originally two homesteads. The new Yurt Village contains six yurts erected on the orchard portion of a homestead known as  the McCaulley homestead. Some of the fruit trees (apples, plums, cherries) growing between the yurts date back to at least the 1930's and remnants of the original fencing still exist.

"In this time of economic downturn with many families living in apartments or in houses on very small lots, public parks are needed now more than ever, " Reardon said. "This park and others like it will continue to be assets to communities throughout Snohomish County."

2009 Evergreen State Fair Honorees AnnouncedStan & Nancy Depner
Each year, the Evergreen State Fair honors an individual or family who has contributed significant personal time and energy toward the improvement and betterment of the annual fair. Their efforts can be focused in a specific area of exhibition or toward the overall function of the Fair.

Stan and Nancy Depner of Monroe, this year's honorees, have been recognized for their work and dedication to the waterfowl and poultry departments. They have been involved with the Snohomish County 4-H program and Fair for more than 20 years.

Stan and Nancy continue to be actively involved so that the Fair experiences can be shared with the next generation, even though their children have long since moved on from the 4-H and FFA programs.
Beginning with the Turkey Trotters 4-H Club and then the Sky Valley 4-H Club, Stan and Nancy built and donated the waterfowl cages, one of the Fair's very special viewing areas. They spend countless hours maintaining the display area so that it's enjoyed by all who attend each year. They are also involved in the Poultry Educational Posters, Showmanship contests, 4-H Small Animal Round Robin, the annual "Duck Day" program and Special Olympics of Snohomish County.

Stan and Nancy will be recognized throughout the Evergreen State Fair held Aug. 27 through Sept. 7.
