 HEALTH TIP

Chicken Soup for Colds
Chicken soup, a popular home remedy for the common cold, may really help to relieve the symptoms of a cold. The hot vapors help break up congestion, making it easier for you to breathe. Soup also provides fluid, which is important for fighting infection. Some researchers suggest that substances in chicken soup can also reduce the inflammation associated with the common cold, thus providing some relief of symptoms. And of course, it also tastes good.

Sand box and kite shade project at Willis Tucker Community Park is complete

Next summer children will enjoy a larger sand box separated from the water spray feature at Willis Tucker Community Park.  Adults who accompany them will enjoy sitting in shade under the new kite shades while watching them. Children will also enjoy the water spray feature more because sand from the sand box will not be dragged into the filters which shuts the system down.  Willis Tucker Community Park is located at 6705 Puget Park Drive, Snohomish.

Martha Lake ground breakingCounty breaks ground on Martha Lake Airport Park
Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon and other community leaders celebrated the beginning of construction at Martha Lake Airport Community Park with a ground breaking event on Feb. 23.

The property, located off 146th Street West in Lynnwood, was purchased in 2000 from the Howe family, who had operated the Martha Lake Airport for many years.

"This is a park project that truly complements a changing and growing neighborhood while still connecting with the history associated with the former airfield," Reardon said. "This park and others like it will continue to be assets to communities throughout Snohomish County."

The $3.1 million project includes baseball and soccer fields, a picnic shelter, restrooms, playground, trails, storm drainage facility, three commissioned artwork pieces and parking for 105 vehicles. The 18-acre park also will feature the county's first skateboard park.

Three pieces of art are included in this park project as part of the county's ordinance requiring that 1 percent of total bid costs be contributed to the arts.

As this site was a former airfield, artworks will pay homage to flight. Michael Whiting will create a "pixilated figure" sculpture of a skateboarder in flight doing a nose grab. Other artworks include a five-sculpture series by Peter Reiquam called "Simple Arrow" and a 14-foot sculpture of Da Vinci wings activated for flight by Rociante Studios.

'Raner' Joe Beardsley
Snohomish County Parks is losing a good friend and park volunteer
Joe Beardslee, after 18 years volunteer service, is moving on to other endeavors. "Ranger Joe," as he is known, first came camping at Flowing Lake as a young 10 year old in 1991. "Ranger Joe" has been volunteering ever since this first visit. He helps park rangers during the off-season by volunteering, sometimes weekly, on a four-hour block of time assisting with trash, litter, restrooms, cabin cleaning, small engine maintenance and projects.

Joe's favorite park activity is to drive the gator and act as eyes and ears for the rangers, looking for any potential wrong doing by other park visitors. "Ranger Joe" has accomplished much over the years and has been a tremendous support. We will miss his heart of gold, energy, and dedication to Snohomish County's parks. We wish him well on his future goals. Thank you for all your years of service, "Ranger Joe." We wish you well with all your future goals.

Work Crew at Paradise ValleyParadise Valley Conservation Area: Trails, parking and other improvements to Paradise Valley Conservation Area is nearly complete.  Please join County Exectuve Aaron Reardon, County Councilman Dave Gosset and your Park Department in celebrating the opening of Paradise Valley Conservation Area on April 22.  The park is located south of SR-522 on Paradise Lake Road and adjacent to the Snohomish/King County line.
