HEALTH TIP
Looking for a convenient way to eat five or more fruits and vegetable servings a day? Keep dried fruit on hand for a quick and healthy snack. Our registered dietitian recommends dried figs, apricots, raisins, plums, blueberries, cranberries or dates. Toss some on your cereal, salad or yogurt, accent a rice dish or enjoy just as they are.
Dried fruit contains more nutrients and calories than an equal amount of whole fruit. A quarter cup (or palmful) counts as a serving. No washing, peeling or slicing required!

Visitors to Spencer Island are reminded that hunting is not allowed on the south end of Spencer Island. This is an intertidal wetland popular with wildlife watchers and waterfowl hunters. The Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife (WDFW) manages the north part of the island and Snohomish County manages the south. Hunting is allowed only on the north/WDFW portion of the island. To get to this area, cross the bridge and turn left. Continue for about 1/4 mile to large wood WDFW signs marking the beginning of WDFW ownership. Property line runs due east across the island; everything to the north is open to hunting. There is a 15-shell limit in place on this site. Please refer to waterfowl regulations for details. CAUTION: This area is intertidal - water levels are constantly changing. Know the tidal conditions before venturing off of the dike trail. Snohomish County Park Rangers have been on patrol during the weekends notifying hunters of the park boundaries. Duck hunting season is over Jan. 25.

Evergreen Fairgrounds announces retirements
After 37 years (yes, 37 YEARS!), Art Verlinde is retiring from the Evergreen State Fairgrounds. During those years, Art has been the main driving force each year for the fairgrounds' year-round landscaping. Evergreen trees that he planted his first year at the Fairgrounds are still going strong and now soar above the buildings. His gentle voice and easy-going manner will be greatly missed. Art plans to spend time with his family and enjoy a lot of extra time at the casinos! Good Luck, Art.
George Biggerstaff has been our resident "mountain man," cabinet builder, fixer and go-to guy for 30 years. After working hard at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds, George now plans to travel and play for the next 30+ years. Now, we'll have to look for his ponytail at the local casinos or at a mountain man rendezvous. His smile, sweet generosity and gentle sarcasm will be missed.

The 2009 Flood
Once again, the Evergreen State Fairgrounds provided safe, dry housing for animals needing evacuation from their flooded home. The Fairgrounds provide a home for 219 horses, four mules, four goats, one cow, 90 chickens and four zebras. Although we peaked early on Jan. 8, animals were still arriving as late as Jan. 12. We appreciate the outpouring of help offered by the community to these animals and their owners.
Your Parks Department has been evaluating damage sustained at park sites during the recent storm and flood events and is coordinating with the Snohomish County Department of Emergency Management to report overall county damages to FEMA.
Park Planner Sharon Swan reports that at this time, park damage appears to be relatively minor and consists primarily of scour damage, failure of two outbuildings and extra costs incurred while housing flood affected animals at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds. Repairs of damaged sites will be scheduled after an evaluation of all impacts has been completed.

Construction Projects
Paradise Valley: Park Planner Chris Mueller and Department of Natural Resources (DNR) crews are constructing improvements at the Paradise Valley Conservation Area. Improvements underway include new trail construction, trail closures and reroutes, fencing and gates at the main parking lot and neighborhood entrances, as well as trail signage throughout the park. One 8-day work session was completed in October, and another is underway this month. An additional 8-day session is scheduled for February. Currently, work is only being conducted west of Paradise Lake Rd (Phase 1). Improvements to the eastern half of the park will be made as part of Phase 2. Phase 1 should be ready for public use by early spring. Paradise Valley is located south of SR-522 on Paradise Lake Road and adjacent to the Snohomish/King County line.
Shy Dog and Forested Trails Off-Leash Areas at Willis Tucker Park opening this month
Economy Fence is in the process of completing punchlist items for the fence installation around the perimeters of the two new off-leash areas at Willis Tucker Park. The shy dog area will provide a little less than ½-acre of romping room for shy dogs, elderly dogs or dogs that just prefer a less boisterous outing compared to some of the frantic frolic that occurs at the adjacent 4.5 acre off-leash area. In addition, a generous three-acre off-leash forested trail area will allow dogs and their companions to wind through the fir, cedar, alder, and cottonwood trees. Sno-DOG volunteers will be scheduling a work party in February or March to cut some additional trails through the forested off-leash area.
National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System
Snohomish County Parks is in the process of completing documents and training to meet the Feb. 16 deadline for compliance requirements of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit issued to Snohomish County by Washington State Department of Ecology. The intention of this permit is to eliminate, reduce and minimize pollutants that are carried by stormwater runoff into waters of the state by implementing various procedures, plans and actions. Park staff recently conducted field staff training on identifying and responding to illicit stormwater discharges and connections using a training module prepared by Surface Water Management.
Construction begins on Martha Lake Airport Park, Snohomish County's newest park. Construction has begun on the property where the Martha Lake Airport formerly operated. Baseball and soccer fields, a skate park, a picnic shelter, restrooms, playground, trails, drinking fountain, fencing, storm drainage facility, three commissioned artwork pieces and parking for 105 vehicles will be built on the 18-acre linear park. Martha Lake Airport Park is located at 200 146th St. W, Lynnwood.
