SAFETY TIPS
Ice on lakes
We caution everyone to stay off the ice that has formed on area lakes!
Even with this December's Winter Blast, the surface ice has not frozen thick enough to support a person's weight.
Tips to stay safe: *Never walk or drive on frozen lakes, retention ponds or other waters.
*Don't play on the ice along the shore, even if it appears solid.
*Make sure children are not left alone near lake ice.
* If someone has fallen through the ice, do not attempt to make a rescue by going out on the ice. * Try to throw a life ring, flotation device or rope for the victim to hold onto.
* Call 911 as quickly as possible. Be sure to give the exact location and an account of the incident.
* If the victim manages to get outof the water, try to dry him/her off and keep warm until emergency help arrives. Source: Snohomish County Fire District 1.
To avoid holiday weight gain, remember these tips:
1. Drink a tall glass of water before each
meal.
2. Bring a "light" dish to
a holiday party and eat
it instead of the high calorie choices.
3. Do something besides eat at a party. Talk, take pictures, play games.
4. Eat a healthy meal before you go shopping so you're not tempted to eat fast food.
5.Take an evening walk instead of watching TV and snacking.
6. Serve more fruits and vegetables.

Want to teach? If you have the special skill and patience needed to teach others, let us know!
Snohomish County Parks and Recreation utilizes independent contract instructors to provide recreational services to our community. Often, a person has a special interest in an area that he or she wants to share with others. Programs may be designed for preschoolers, school age children, teens, adults, families or seniors. A canoeing/sea kayaking instructor is especially needed.
Your participation and involvement will complement the diversity of our programming and contribute to the overall success of the programs. The Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building strong families through the provision of recreational opportunities. We believe that the benefits of participating in recreational programs, classes and events are more important than the activity itself.
For more information, call Recreation Supervisor Tony Trofimczuk at 425-388-6604 or tonyt@snoco.org.

Your Snohomish County Parks and Friends of Heybrook Ridge begin planning use of Heybrook Ridge property The 129 acre property that makes up Heybrook Ridge was purchased with monies collected by the Friends of Heybrook Ridge and funds provided by Snohomish County with the goal of preserving the natural environment to protect fish and wildlife habitat corridors, preserve and conserve open space, provide appropriate public access and offer environmental education opportunities. Your Snohomish County Parks Department is excited to begin working with the Friends of Heybrook Ridge and other Snohomish County residents i\to plan this park for the public's future use. Residents may indicate their preferred uses for the park property in a series of public meetings in 2009. From these meetings a comprehensive list of ideas will be developed in which your Parks department planning staff will evaluate and look at each opportunity and determine how many of these ideas can be incorporated into the final design of the park that supports the goals identified when the property was purchased. Your Parks Department values the insight, expertise, and collaboration of the Cascade Land Conservancy on this project and many others. We look forward to working with all of our partners and interested citizens to create an amazing community park asset.
