County preserves Heybrook Ridge
Snohomish County assisted the Cascade Land Conservancy and a grassroots group of east Snohomish County residents in finalizing their purchase of 130 acres of sensitive forestland near the recently established Wild Sky Wilderness Area known as Heybrook Ridge. Purchase of this property will close on September 30th.  The Conservancy secured an option on the property last year.

The county contributed $700,000 of funding from the Snohomish County Conservation Futures Program to the $1.21 million purchase. Friends of Heybrook Ridge - made up of local residents and outdoor enthusiasts - donated $550,000, including a $500,000 anonymous gift. Snohomish County will be the owner of the property with its parks department as the designated custodian.

The Friends of Heybrook Ridge will celebrate the purchase of this property on October 4th from 2 to 10 p.m. with a barbeque and live blue grass music in Index.

New off-leash dog area at Willis Tucker Park opens

Attention all canines and companions! Celebration of the opening of 4.5 acres of the new off-leash area of Willis Tucker Park is tentatively scheduled for Nov 1st. A costume party is in the works and any theme goes. We hope to have sweets and treats, so dress up that pup and join us for a "pawsitively" fun frolicking time. Prizes will be awarded for best costume! Watch for details at www.snocoparks.org.

The new off-leash dog area is located in the northeast corner of Willis Tucker Community Park, just a walk through the woods north of the temporary park. This portion of the off-leash area sports a rolling meadow with a variety of evergreens and deciduous trees scattered throughout.

The volunteer group Sno-DOG is coordinating a volunteer work party on Sunday, October 5th from 10 am to 4pm to help us get ready for the grand opening. They will be picking up rocks, branches, twigs and doing some pruning to make the area ready for hydroseeding. Bring the family for one hour or more, but Rover must sit this one out at home. For more information, visit www.Sno-DOG.org.
