to your Snohomish County Parks & Recreation's electronic newsletter with brief updates on our projects and events.

Your August newsletter is coming to you this first week of September because the Evergreen State Fair ended September 1st and we wanted to recap all of the fair's activities.

During August your Parks Department operated youth camps, the swimming pool, campgrounds and day-use areas. We also celebrated completion of the Willis Tucker Amphitheater and sponsored the National Night Out Against Crime event at McCollum County Park.

Meadowdale BeachMEADOWDALE BEACH PARK
IS OPEN
!
Temporary repairs to the storm-damaged trail at Meadowdale Beach Park have been completed and access to the beach has been temporarily restored. Parks staff constructed an elevated boardwalk around one of the holes and cleared sediment deposits from the meadow region and tunnel. Meadowdale Beach Park was closed after the December 3, 2007, storm caused extensive damage. Landslides in two different places along the trail eroded holes 20 feet deep or more.

NOTE: Until repairs to the access road are complete, restroom facilities are not available at the beach. Facilities are available at the top of the trail (please plan your visit accordingly).

Final repairs are scheduled for this fall.

JOHN L SCOTT'S MONROE OFFICE WINNER IN EVERGREEN STATE FAIR'S STOREFRONT DECORATION CONTEST
The Evergreen State Fair revived an old tradition in 2006 where local businesses decorate their storefronts to the Fair's theme for the year. This year participating businesses were asked to highlight the Hokey Pokey using Fair mascots from the past six years.

The John L. Scott office, located at 14815 Chain Lake Road, was selected as "Best in Show" while the Monroe Chamber of Commerce off Main Street won a First Place ribbon. Also receiving honors were The Buzz Inn Steakhouse (Second Place) at Highway 2 and the Monroe Post Office (Third Place), located near Main Street. Judging was based on originality, creativity and use of theme.

As the grand prize winner, John L. Scott was honored during the 2008 Evergreen State Fair festivities. The company's name will be added to a perpetual plaque displayed year-round at the fairgrounds.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT AT McCOLLUM PARK
On Tuesday, August 5th, the Snohomish County Executive Office sponsored a large "National Night Out Against Crime" event at McCollum Park, bringing an estimated 2,000 adults and children together for music, free food, games, visits with local law enforcement and emergency management representatives
to learn how to protect themselves from crime.

Midway through the evening, the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office helicopter swooped in for a visit and was a big hit for children and adults alike. Spectators were able to see the helicopter up close and visit with law enforcement. In addition to the helicopter, tours of Mill Creek Police Department and Fire District 1 and 7 vehicles were offered.

19th ANNUAL STILLIGUAMISH FESTIVAL OF THE RIVER AT RIVER MEADOWS PARK
More than 8,000 festival-goers celebrated summer and the Pacific Northwest during the 19th Annual Stilliguamish Festival of the River at River Meadows County Park on August 9th and 10th. Regional citizens and visitors shared their experiences and learned from others about water quality, salmon habitat, and the watershed.

The festival featured a giant storytelling turtle tent, interpretive salmon habitat tours, wild bird presentations featuring eagles, hawks, and owls, games and craft activities for children; crosscut saw competitions, educational displays, arts and craft vendors, a scrumptious salmon steak and buffalo burger barbecue prepared by the Stillaguamish Tribe, and a variety of live music.

The mission of the Festival is to help people who live and work in the Stillaguamish Watershed and surrounding regions understand how their actions can help make their environment cleaner for people, fish, and wildlife.

YARD GRANTS HEAD TO COUNCIL FOR FINAL APPROVAL
About $1 million in park amenity projects, funded in part with Snohomish County grants, were forwarded Tuesday by the County Executive to the County Council for final approval. Ten projects were selected earlier this year as part of the inaugural Youth Amenities and Recreation Development (YARD) grant program. They are being funded with $450,000 in county seed money, matched by more than $500,000 in community funds and volunteer labor.

The YARD grant program gives nonprofits, school districts and local municipalities a funding source to complete much-needed parks projects throughout Snohomish County. "We're building up this community by investing county money in partnerships that will improve the quality of recreational opportunities available in Snohomish County," Reardon said. "This small amount of seed money is a considerable investment without a tax increase to Snohomish County residents."

The program is part of the Community Enhancement Initiative proposed by Reardon as part of the 2008 county budget. Reardon has included new funding for additional YARD grant money in the 2009-2010 biennial budget. Applications for this year's awards were solicited in February and March by the county's Parks and Recreation Department. A total of 13 applications were received and 10 met the grant requirements. Grant winners gathered in May for the award announcements, together with the County Executive and members of the County Council.

Other grant-funded projects can be found throughout Snohomish County, including Arlington, Everett, Monroe, Mountlake Terrace and Sultan. Grants vary from a little more than $6,000 to the maximum of $75,000. Projects include sports field improvements, playground equipment and a ropes challenge course.
