Snohomish County Parks Celebrates National Trails Day
National Trails Day is a nationwide celebration assisting agency landowners on trail projects. The Everett Mountaineers celebrated National Trails Day on June 7 by hosting a trail building day at Lord Hill County Park.
The Mountaineers donated their time constructing a new loop trail adding trail opportunities for park hikers and bicycle riders connecting recreation opportunities between the north and south half of the park.
Volunteers celebrated their hard day of trail building with a BBQ dinner and door prizes. About 100 volunteers signed up for this activity. Snohomish County Parks appreciates this tremendous support and dedication by so many individuals and the Everett Mountaineers.
Campfire Breakfast
Try cooking these unique breakfast meals on coals the next time you are camping:
1. Breakfast in a Bag
Required: Paper lunch bag; roasting stick; campfire with hot coals and little flame.
Ingredients per person: 2 strips bacon; handful of frozen hash browns;1 or 2 eggs; salt and pepper
Lay bacon in bottom of bag. Add potatoes. Add eggs.
Close bag by folding top 1/3 down, then fold that in 1/2 and in 1/2 again. Poke through the folded portion with the stick to hold it above the fire. Hold 5 inches above coals for 10 minutes (prop by sticking the other end of the stick in the dirt to keep the bag out of the coals).
Open bag to check. If it's done, tear the top off the bag or fold it down and eat right out of the bag. Since the bag is greasy, sit it on a plate or something other than the table or pants leg.
2. Egg in Orange Half
Cut large orange in half, spoon out the pulp, (save for later). Crack an egg into each half. Put orange halves directly on the coals. Cook until done (some have taken as long as 20 minutes.) Remove with tongs. The eggs have a really unique taste.
3. Egg in Onion Half
Double treat on this one - the cooking container can become part of the meal!
Cut a large onion lengthwise (stem to root). Remove about half the inside. Crack an egg into each half. Put halves directly on the coals. Cook until done. Remove from coals. Let cool on a plate for a bit, then peel away the burned portion of the onion.
Watch for more unique recipes next month !

County Executive Awards Grants to Build New Park Features
Standing in front of a half-finished playground at Forest View Elementary School on Friday, May 30th, Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon announced a list of grant recipients under the county's latest effort to spur construction of new park amenities.
Ten projects, including the completion of Forest View's playground, are being funded with about $450,000 in county seed money, matched by more than $500,000 in community funds and volunteer labor.
"We're putting county money to work and building up this community," Reardon said. "This small amount of seed money becomes a considerable investment without a tax increase to Snohomish County residents."

Willis Tucker Community Park Spray Feature Opens May 23rd
Moments after Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon and children cut the ribbon to the newly installed spray feature at Willis Tucker Park, local children immediately raced to cool off with the Silverflow Cannon, Aqua Dome, Splash Palace and more.
The project was paid for in part with $250,000 in Community Infrastructure Development Initiative (CIDI) funds. In 2006, Reardon proposed an innovative approach to funding needed infrastructure and recreational projects without a tax increase.
The three-year, bond-funded program - leveraged by the county's improved bonding capacity - accelerated the construction of important transportation, surface water and parks projects as much as 10 years earlier than expected. Access related Herald article,

Cathcart Plan Mixes Jobs, Transit and Green Living
Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon has unrolled his plan to create sustainable living, working and recreational opportunities on more than 600 acres of public land known as the Cathcart property.
Reardon's vision includes an employment cluster, housing and commercial services on 20 percent of the county owned property while protecting 80 percent for public space, parks and infrastructure. The proposal provides amenities for current residents in the area by linking existing walking trails and parks with new shops, public spaces, a transit hub and job center, as well as experimental agriculture and solar-energy production on the county's former landfill.
Reardon and county officials are hosting a series of community meetings designed to engage public input on how Cathcart should look and integrate into the surrounding community. The first, held June 4, was well attended. Another meeting is scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. June 24 at Willis Tucker Park. The county will hold monthly meetings with stakeholders and community members from June through September 2008 on conceptual design. In October 2008 the concept and rezone will be introduced to the Snohomish County Planning Commission as a part of the annual Comprehensive Plan review process.
