YARD Grant Program
Under a proposal launched by Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon, in the 2008 Machias PlaygroundCounty Budget, local organizations building sports and recreational facilities now can compete for grants as part of the new Youth Amenities and Recreation Development grant program (YARD Grants).

YARD Grants will provide matching grant funding to youth sports or community organizations - in partnership with public entities such as the county, cities or school districts - proposing to rehabilitate, expand or develop sports fields, playgrounds and other recreational facilities serving youth in Snohomish County.

"These grants will allow us to partner with stakeholders to provide community-based recreational facilities for Snohomish County youth," Reardon said. "Youth sports and other community organizations are part of the fabric of our county and we look forward to partnering with them."

A total of $450,000 is allocated to the grant program. Successful applicants will receive up to $75,000 to assist in the construction of the facilities described in their proposals. Selected organizations must match grant proceeds with cash or volunteer labor.

Application materials are available on the Snohomish County Web site and can be downloaded online at www.snoco.org (search "parks"). Submit applications to Parks Administration, Willis Tucker Park, 6705 Puget Park Dr., Snohomish, WA 98296, or e-mail to Russ Bosanko at russ.bosanko@co.snohomish.wa.us by March 7. Successful applicants will be announced in May.

Call the Snohomish County Park Department for answers to questions and technical assistance in application preparation at 425-388-6600.
Spray Pad ConstructionSpray Park Construction at Willis Tucker Community Park Update

The Spray Park at Willis Tucker Community Park is well on its way to providing another popular play venue for children in Snohomish County. The pump house has been completed, grading and piping are going smoothly as is the pouring of concrete and establishment of the base for the spray features to come. With good weather and prompt receipt of equipment, children should be enjoying the spray park when the warmer weather arrives in late April or early May. Families that have been frequenting the playground will be able to expand their recreational options at the adjacent spray park and the new picnic shelter.

Willis Tucker Community Park Off Leash Area

Snohomish County Parks is considering an 11-acre Willis Tucker Park off-leash area. The 11-acre site will be in the northwest region of the park, just north of the current temporary site. Currently, the temporary off-leash site has been so popular with the community that the Parks Department is organizing efforts to work with Sno-DOG volunteers to prepare a larger, more permanent area. Volunteers are needed to assist in mapping and clearing boundary lines, digging post holes, installing fencing and removing underbrush. We would encourage all interested parties to contact Sno-DOG via their Web site at www.sno-dog.org. Work parties will be organized soon.

Construction Projects Update

Parks are growing and developing to meet the recreational and cultural needs of a growing community with several projects under construction at this time.

The Paine FIeld Community Park project includes improved parking, a new restroom, a new playground and the addition of a new graded and grassy area that will later provide the opportunity for the development of a soccer field.

Parks recently completed a new shake roof on one of the barns at the Trafton Trailhead site northeast of the City of Arlington, which not only improves the "look" of the barn, it also preserves the structure for many years to come.

Work continues at Willis Tucker Community Park. Currently, the new amphitheater with additional parking is advertised for bid. The community is looking forward to local cultural events that will provide another important function to a community park growing in popularity. The spray park at the park is under construction and described in another part of this newsletter.

In the near future, we will be advertising bids for construction of a new Yurt Village at River Meadows Regional Park. This camping amenity will be similar to the popular Yurt Village located at Kayak Regional Park.

2008 Annual Parking Boat/Launch Permits are now available online at www.snoco.org (search "parks"). You may also purchase your permit in person at Kayak Point, Flowing Lake or Willis Tucker Parks or by telephone 425-388-6600. The $50 pass is good for the 2008 calendar year.
