A Bright Future for Snohomish County Parks & Trails
Snohomish County is enjoying the recent addition of new parks and trail development and projecting a bright future characterized by the expansion of the Snohomish County Multipurpose Recreational Trail System, the development of new Community and Regional Parks and the addition of new facilities at existing parks.
Families and individual park enthusiasts have been taking advantage of recently completed projects. Walkers, bikers, and equestrians are enjoying the additional 10 miles on the Snohomish County Centennial Trail between the cities of Lake Stevens and Arlington. Amenities at Willis Tucker Community Park now include an off-leash dog park, two Class A baseball fields, a basketball court, nature trails, playground, picnic shelters, restroom and community center. New playgrounds were constructed in 2007 at Kayak Regional Park, Lord Hill Regional Park, Machias Trailhead, North Creek Regional Park and Meadowdale Park as part of the County Executive's Enhanced Community Infrastructure Initiative.
Projects which will be advertised for bid early in 2008 include: Phase 1 of Lake Stevens Community Park which includes two baseball fields, a restroom, parking, a playground, grading for four future soccer fields and typical park amenities; Phase 1 of Martha Lake Airport Community Park which will offer one little league baseball field, two soccer fields, a skateboard park, a restroom, picnic shelters, trails, parking, playground and typical park amenities; a new Yurt Village camping opportunity at River Meadows Park; and an amphitheater and additional parking at Willis Tucker Community Park. All of these projects will include public art funded through the County's 1% for the Arts Program.
The future also promises extending the popular Snohomish County Centennial Trail an additional 8 miles from the City of Arlington to Skagit County. The project is currently working its way through the local, state and federal permit processes. Parks will also be completing improvement to ballfields at Esperance and Forsgren Parks; upgrades to the pool at McCollum Park; improvements to Whitehorse Community Park and construction of additional off-leash dog parks at several locations around Snohomish County. Parks will also be working on a master development plan with the community for Cavalero Hill Community Park.
With the help of local funding, grants from state and federal programs, assistance from private sources, partnerships with non-profit community organizations and support from the general public, Snohomish County Parks will continue planning, building and operating facilities and programs to meet the needs of a growing County.
