Westminster Academy | Devoted to Christ - Dedicated to Excellence

Dr. Leo Orsino HeadshotDear WA Community,

As we plan ahead for next year we are very excited to announce some changes that will help our students, parents and Kingdom workers at WA. We have been prayerfully reviewing our needs to better serve and educate our students and serve their families, as well as our faculty and staff. Given our student enrollment growth and the needs of our students, we will be adding a middle school principal to oversee the needs of our 6th through 8th grade students.

Diane Showalter, who has been serving as our lower school assistant principal for this year, will become our middle school principal starting with the 2012-2013 school year. She will oversee and serve the middle school (6th through 8th grade) students and their families, as well as the middle school faculty and staff. Mrs. Showalter has twenty-two years of experience in education. She has served as a teacher, team leader, assistant principal and principal, during her years as an educator (please see Diane's professional bio below).  Mrs. Showalter will be located in the upper school office area-beginning next year.

Tracey Wood, who is currently serving WA as a lower school teacher, will become the assistant principal in the Lower School-beginning next year. Mrs. Wood will continue as our lower school teacher for the remainder of this school year. Mrs. Wood has served as a teacher at WA for seventeen years. Mrs. Wood will work with Mrs. Becky Myers, our lower school principal, and Mrs. Kristi Scallin, our lower school enrichment education coordinator, to oversee the lower school students, faculty and staff next year. (please see Tracey's professional bio below).

Mike Critch, who is currently serving as our upper school (6th through 12th grade) principal, will serve as the high school principal and oversee the 9th through 12th grade students, faculty and staff next year. Christine Englert, who is currently serving as the upper school (6th through 12th grade) counselor, will serve as the high school counselor (9th-12th grade students). Mrs. Bevill, will continue to serve as the middle school counselor. Jason Beaupied, will continue to serve as our Spiritual Life Director for 6th through 12th grade.

We are very excited about these WA employee promotions and the positive impact these Kingdom workers will have on our students and school ministry. Beginning next year, we will be positioned to better serve the educational needs of our students, as well as their families and our faculty and staff in all three school divisions at WA.

EXPLORE Test

WA has been approved by College Board to serve as a Duke TIP Elementary Student Talent Search test site for the EXPLORE test. This test is offered during a DUKE TIP scholar's 5th and 6th grade school year. The Lower School recognizes our DUKE TIP scholars beginning at the end of the student's 4th grade school year, based upon the eligibility requirements of the program. At this time, only current 5th and 6th grade DUKE TIP scholars who have been previously identified during the 2010-2011 school year, are eligible to apply for the EXPLORE test. Please know that individual emails were sent out in December to these DUKE TIP scholars and their families to inform them of this opportunity.

To register for the February EXPLORE test date, please visit the Duke TIP website at www.apply.tip.duke.edu. While the deadline for on-time registration was December 19, there are still additional slots available, and applications are still being accepted. We will be offering this test at WA on Saturday, February 18, 2012.
