Alternatives to Tackling Acne
|
| For most people, acne is an inherited condition of the pores. There are about five layers of skin cells inside of each pore. Healthy pores shed a layer of these skin cells each day; however, the pores of an acne-prone person can shed up to five layers a day. When the layers shed more quickly than the pore can expel them, this is called retention hyperkeratosis. The dead skin cells accumulate inside the pore and form a plug called a microcomedone - essentially the precursor to all acne.
Also, hormonal fluctuations may trigger more oil production inside the pore. In normal skin, this isn't a problem because the dead cells don't get trapped. With acne-prone skin, the excess sebum combines with the blockage from the dead cells to create the perfect environment for acne bacteria to flourish.
Acne Solutions:
1. Use a gentler cleanser other than the standard benzoyl peroxide which can be very harsh and irritating to the skin.
2. Control oil production while ensuring that hydration is stable. Many "one-size-fits all" approaches to acne management are inherently dehydrating. This can also perpetuate an imbalance in the skin.
3. Use alternatives to exfoliate skin that are not abrasive and do not throw off the pH of the skin, such as Eminence's Strawberry Rhubarb Serum.
4. Keep communicating with your esthetician. Product and application adjustments may be necessary as cycles and/or healing occur.
