I wish a common ingredient found in most antimicrobial liquid hand soaps wasn't finding its way into lakes where it degrades into toxins.  Yet it is.  By frequently hand washing with pure and simple soaps we can have the benefits of cleanliness
without unnecessary negative environmental
impacts.

Exfoliation 101

The process of exfoliation loosens and sloughs away dead cells on the outer skin layer of skin.  This is a naturally occurring cycle that results in old skin cells replaced by new ones on average every 28 days.  However, as we age these cycles take longer, and this makes exfoliation treatments key to maintaining skin health and beauty.

Using a variety of exfoliation methods, we help the skin shed stubborn dead skin cells that can stand in the way of benefits no matter moisturizer you are slapping on.  Dead skin cells also clog pores making them prone to blackheads while skin can become dehydrated and rough.  These facts make regular exfoliation the cornerstone of any effective skin care regimen.

Key Exfoliation Methods:
*Massage exfoliation can be performed with sugar, salt, poppy seeds, crushed almonds, maize flour, etc.

* Enzymatic or chemical masks exfoliate without massage.  A natural approach is based on fruit enzymes such as pineapple, pumpkin, papaya and naseberry.  There are two types of hydroxy acids - alpha and beta. Alpha hydroxy acids are exfoliants derived from fruit and milk sugars such as glycolic acid produced from sugar cane and lactic acid produced from milk. There is only one beta hydroxy acid - salicylic acid.  A glycolic peel is a clinical enzymatic exfoliation that uses a stronger chemical.  These enzymatic exfoliations make the skin tingle a bit as dead skin cells are loosened for removal. Glycolic Treatments are performed by an esthetician.

* Microdermabrasion is a clinical approach that is highly effective in accelerating the benefits of exfoliation. The esthetician uses a microderm wand in cross-hatched type movements across different sections of the face which sloughs away dead skin while the microderm machine acts as a "gentle vacuum" to whisk away the dead skin cells.  There is no down time from this treatment.  Because it is highly effective in reducing the dead skin cover and revealing a new skin surface, microdermabrasion is advisable only in the Fall and Winter when our exposure to harmful UV rays is limited.

Which of these approaches is best for your skin is best determined by an experienced professional.  My free consultation and recommendation can help you choose your path to these great exfoliation benefits:

* New cell regeneration
* Sloughs off stubborn dead skin cells
* Refines skin texture and adds vibrancy
* Unclogs pores to better absorb nutrients
* Helps prevent break-outs
* Reduces or heals red patches and rough, flakey patches
* Reduces fine lines and wrinkles
* Helps stimulate fibroblasts and collagen
* Reduction in pore size

Four Dioxins Produced Only by Triclosan Discovered in Lake Waters

A new University of Minnesota study found that certain types of dioxins derived from many popular cleaning agents are showing up increasingly in river sediments.

The Minnesota research attributes water dioxin contamination to triclosan, an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent that was first added to commercial liquid hand soap in 1987.

"These four dioxins only come from triclosan. They didn't exist in Lake Pepin before triclosan was introduced," said U of M civil engineering professor William Arnold.

A research report found Triclosan in dozens of common household products. We are so surrounded by the compound that it is found in the urine of 75 percent of the U.S. population, the Washington Post reported.    About 96 percent of triclosan from consumer products is disposed of in residential drains, leading to large loads of the chemical in water entering wastewater treatment plants that can't remove it all.  When treated wastewater is released to the environment, sunlight converts some of the triclosan and related compounds into dioxins.  Simply combining Triclosan with chlorinated water can produce dioxin.

A mutinigenic contaminant associated with "Agent Orange" and "Love Canal," Dioxins can be highly toxic, causing liver disease, birth defects and other disorders. Washing hands frequently and longer clears bacteria without tricolsan.   There are also some essential oils that have antimicrobial properties, such as Australian tea tree oil, grapefruit seed extract, and pine oil.
