Amy's Skin Care News
Dear Friend,

This month we highlight the art of facial massage, a rejuvenating and beautifying process that can help you achieve inner peace.  Celebrate Mother's Day on May 9th by treating yourself or your Mom to a well-deserved break from busy lifestyles.

Also in this issue, learn how open spaces help keep us sane.  Many of us are fortunate to have parks and
woodlands close enough nearby to be enjoyed everyday.

The Value of Facial Massage
The psychological state induced is as rejuvenating as a mini-vacation

Take a mini-vacationAn anti-stress facial massage has always been part of my facial service at Amy's Skin Care.   Clients often tell me its the only complete relaxation they enjoy amidst the hectic schedule of their busy week. I have noticed that these techniques enable longer lasting facial benefits and a wonderful, youthful, radiant glow for many.

My facial massage techniques are based upon a comprehensive scientific understanding of the skeletal, neuromuscular and lymphatic systems.  Combining the correct touch, the right pressure, and the temperature of the cream or lotion that is applied, these techniques result in a completely rejuvenating experience and heals both psyche and skin for truly therapeutic effects.

Each facial massage is a custom treatment designed to release the tension and pressure evident in your face.  The most common area of tension relief is the epicranius frontalis which raises eyebrows and causes the forehead to wrinkle.  Many clients also benefit from massaging the risorius muscle used in smiling or relaxing the zygomaticus muscle used in laughing.  Facial massage is the natural way to smooth your brow.

Manual lymphatic drainage is an additional certified technique that stimulates the lymphatic system to  aid purification. By filtering and removing waste, the  lymphatic  plays a vital role in detoxifying and beautifying the skin.  Beyond the cosmetic benefits, lymphatic massage boosts the immune system; helps ward off illness and increases vitality and health; improves the appearance of skin; reduces water retention from poor circulation or allergies; can help with pain; and promotes the body's healing mechanisms.

Almost everybody can benefit from facial massage that stimulates collagen and elastin, improves skin texture, and circulation, and helps eliminate toxins while relieving stress and tension, resulting in a smoother, healthier-looking complexion.  Ultimately, the tension released from the facial muscles enhances the natural beauty in all of us.

A recent study shows that people living closer to green spaces are at significantly lower risk for a wide variety of mental and physical illnesses, according to a study conducted by researchers from the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

In the greater Kirkland vicinity we are fortunate to have an excellent variety of green spaces nearby, including St. Edward's Park, O. O. Denny Park and Big Finn Hill. I personally try to get out to these great spaces several times a week. The hike is great for my overall health, helps restore sanity to my life, and Pepper loves it!
Improve appearance by reducing pore size

When pores are tighter, light reflects better. You get an overall appearance of vitality, youthfulness, and health.

If you've had a lot of sun exposure in the past, you start to lose the collagen and elastin that support the pores.  With age, pores begin to stretch and sag around the edges, which can make them look bigger.

While pore size is largely determined by genetics, skin type and age, proper and consistent skin regimens can tighten pores and improve their appearance.

Pores perform a vital skin function. While you can't be rid of them, reduction in size can be attained.  The right skin-care products and treatments can help keep the skin clear and tight, making pores less noticeable.   Pore-minimizing products will help your pores look clearer - and therefore appear smaller if you use them on a regular basis.

Our pores are naturally filled with oil and dead skin cells on a daily basis, and when not cleaned out will continue to stretch.  Oil gets trapped in pores where the exposed portion oxidizes, turns dark and forms blackheads.  Professional estheticians are trained in extraction to remove the debris properly to prevent scarring, and regular treatment is key.

For home treatment, exfoliation is a key skin care regimen to achieve a refined pore appearance.   Eminence Blueberry Soy Exfoliating Cleanser contains salicylic and lactic acid and can be used morning and evening.

Natural ways to exfoliate and reduce pore size offer efficacy comparable to many prescription drugs without their risks.  Prescription retinoid creams such as Tazarac, Retin-A, and Differin exfoliate pores and flush them of oil and buildup, which makes them appear smaller.  But over time, the prescriptions compromise the skin and create long term sensitivities.

Man Wins $25M Judgement

A New Jersey man was awarded a $25 million verdict against Roche, alleging that Accutane gave him a severe inflammatory bowel disorder, and he's not the first.

People with severe cystic acne, the type for which Accutane is typically prescribed, are often told that they have no alternative if they want to cure their acne. Truth be told, the active ingredient in Accutane is simply a synthetic form of vitamin A. Rather than take the synthetic form, acne sufferers would be better off researching natural, carotene forms of vitamin A that are safe and non-toxic.

Sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, goji berries, kale, collard greens, cilantro, broccoli, and many other fruits and vegetables are rich in natural vitamin A. Red palm oil, the richest natural source of beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A, is an excellent food for combatting acne.
The skin benefit of a healthy dietary approach are reinforced with Eminence products that effectively deliver vitamins and nourishment directly to the skin.   Since there are many natural approaches to fighting severe acne that are highly effective, there is no reason for anyone to put their health in jeopardy by taking Accutane.

Cosmetic Chemicals Increase Risk of Breast Cancer

Doctor and Patient
Women unknowingly apply up to 175 different chemicals to their bodies daily in the form of mainstream cosmetics. Three ingredients are especially hazardous. Parabens (preservatives used in many moisturizers, body creams, hair products and make up) have been linked to both cancer and to skin irritation. Sodium lauryl sulfate (a foaming agent used in shampoos) can irritate the skin, as can formaldehyde (used in hand soap and shampoo). "Media reports about the possible dangers of certain chemicals such as parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, phthalates and formaldehyde have made consumers more aware of what they are buying, and potentially more demanding of chemical safe alternatives," says Julia Mitchell.
