Help For Cystic Acne

What is Cystic Acne?
Cystic acne are nodules that consist of a mixture of sebum (oil) and keratin. The blemishes may appear red on the surface of the skin, which are very deep and painful. Cystic acne can last for months if not addressed.
Hormones and Acne
While acne typically appears during adolescence, hormonally influenced acne can begin in the early-to-mid twenties and can reappear at various times during adulthood, particularly in peri-menopause. Hormones are usually the culprit for acne breakout. The cause of hormonal acne is often linked to androgens, which are hormones that stimulate the sebaceous / oil glands. When the sebaceous glands are over-stimulated by androgens, acne flare-ups, including cystic acne can occur.
Holistic Help for Cystic Acne
Cystic acne forms well beneath the skin. Popping / extracting this type of acne will likely cause infection and scarring. Since the acne does not have an "opening" to extract, it must be healed from the dermal layer. Amy's Skin Care offers a "facial detox" to facilitate the purging, calming and healing of this type of acne. Eminence's Hungarian approach to clearing up cystic acne includes some stimulating masques such as the Paprika Treatment, Hungarian Herbal Mud Masque, Lime Stimulating Masque or Eight Greens Phyto Masque. The stimulating ingredients such as cinnamon, paprika, nettles, etc. open up the capillaries and purge toxins and cystic stagnation. The heat moves the nodule within the dermal level without poking or prodding the very sensitive area.
A home regiment can be done with similar masques that will continue to promote the movement and clearing of the nodule(s). This solution is safer than some Western medical approaches which include birth control pills, antibiotics, accutane, retinoids, etc. Clearly, if cystic acne does not diminish after a month of esthetician treatments and a supplemental home care regime, a naturopathic physician or acupuncturist who specializes in dermatology would be strongly recommended.
