Supporting Social Skills at Home

Similar to academics, social skills come easier for some students whereas others need more guidance. A child's school day encompasses social interactions which can play a large role in their academic success. In order to foster social and emotional growth with our children, we encourage parents to reinforce the following skill steps.

Steps for Joining a Group

  1. Stand nearby, look, and listen.
  2. Say something positive or ask questions.
  3. Ask to play or join.
  4. Say something helpful or find a way to help.
  5. Ask again to play or join.

Conversation Steps

  1. Decide what you want to talk about.
  2. Ask the other person friendly, respectful questions about the topic you've chosen.
  3. Show that you are a good listener:
    1. Look at the person who is speaking.
    2. Nod your head (or say something to show that you understand).
  4. Say something to show that you are thinking about what is being said.
  5. Ask another question if you're finished talking about the first one.
  6. End the conversation politely.

Having an open dialogue about your child's friendships and social experiences is a great way to problem-solve challenges that may arise.

From the Special Education Department

A common goal for teachers and parents is supporting children with

schoolwork... while not working harder than the children! To teach and support, we adults too often "talk at children."  While instructing and establishing routines are necessary, our goal is to engage and motivate, releasing the responsibility of learning to the student. An effective method whereby parents can lead their child to deeper understanding and greater independence is Guided Questioning.

Picture homework time each night. Try shifting how you guide study habits by asking questions. Parents may model questions, such as "Which homework should I start first?" or "How long do I think this will take?" These planning questions respect the child's learning style and his/her ownership of the homework, while promoting time management and organizational skills. Parents need to monitor progress, and guide more effective methods through questioning when things go awry ("What do you think would have helped? What could you do next time?) .

Similarly, parents can utilize inquiry methods to support understanding of content material. Many a student says s/he "doesn't get it" or "needs help." Rather than giving answers, try to activate thinking. Ask what part is confusing. Ask what is already known about the topic to get a sense of where the understanding breaks down or where there are misconceptions. If a child is confused in math, provide a completed example, asking if s/he can generalize the steps to a similar problem.

To support studying for a test and build metacognition, ask your child to make a Top 10 List of likely questions, and practice answering. Ask your child to visualize and/or create vivid phrases or pictures that support memory of key terms and names.  To deepen meaning, ask how concepts or people are similar or different. Ask how a skill or idea could be used in real life, in a meaningful context, to foster interest and deepen understanding. Supporting schoolwork by use of guided questioning creates a dialogue between a parent and the student that helps promote engaged, responsible learners.

From the Band Office

Attendance at instrumental lessons is an important part of each band member's progress. For practice and for safe keeping, instruments should be brought home at the end of each rehearsal and lesson day. To aid your child at home, encourage him/her to plan ahead, noting the time of their lesson within the context of the rest of the school day.  If a scheduled lesson is in conflict with an important classroom activity, students should see me as soon as possible so we can try to arrange up a make-up lesson, a task more easily accomplished in advance.

Attention Third Grade Parents:

Mr. Turner and I are starting a Family and Me Music class which will begin in April and run for one week. Family and Me Music classes invite parents to attend their childs' music class during the regular school day and experience a typical 45 minute period of music making.

Parents and children alike will get to sing, play instruments, hear small ensembles perform, move interperatively to selections of music, audiate, play games and read rhythms!  This is such a wonderful and exciting way to see what your child experiences in General Music each week and it will allow you to try new things that are not part of everyday life.

More information will follow in the next Spofford Times, so please keep your eyes open! In the meantime, please check out the Music web page to see your child's schedule online:

We hope you can make it!

From the Math Office

April is Math Awareness Month and to celebrate we are planning a Math Fair at Spofford Pond School to be held on April 4, 2012.  This will be a student driven event where children in grades 3-6 can make a math related project and present it to the rest of the Spofford community.  It will be a non-competitive, fun event where students of all math abilities are encouraged to participate.  They can make a math game, create math art, research a famous mathematician, or explain the math in an everyday activity....  Just about anything goes!  This will be a project that children will work on primarily at home and will check in with me along the way for help and guidance.  This is an optional activity and one that I hope you will encourage your children to participate in and enjoy.  Please email Jen Sirmaian if you have any questions at jsirmaian@boxfordschools.org

Music Scholarship Fund Annual Appeal

Flyers have been sent home with Spofford and Cole students for the annual appeal for contributions to the Boxford Elementary School Music Scholarship Fund. Each year, from 3 to 5 music students (depending on donations) are awarded $200 scholarships to offset costs associated with learning a second (or third) instrument, attending music camp, or to help with tuition for groups like those at the New England Conservatory. Established in 1999, the fund has awarded over 40 scholarships.

Scholarships are open to all elementary school music students, and are not limited to students in the Spofford Pond ensembles.  Applications can be obtained from Mrs. Monty at Spofford Pond School, or by eMail to

TCAdtaylor@cs.com.

If you did not receive a flyer and wish to contribute to the fund, please

send a check made out to BMSF to BMSF, PO Box 285, West Boxford, MA 01885.

Without your help, we could not award these scholarships and recognize our exceptional music students.
