Greetings!

Important Safety Message:
On Tuesday of this week, we will be hosting a Special Election at the school. Please note that for morning drop off and parent pick up that you will be directed to move around the back of the school towards the playground.  There will be signs and staff members there to assist you.  This will keep the parking lot open for voters and allow a safe drop-off and pick-up for students. Please follow the directions on the signs and staff members outside there to help guide cars.  I appreciate your assistance with this as we  work to keep everything running smoothly!

A Special Thank you!
Many thanks to Mrs. Andrea Monty and Mrs. Kristen Galardi for wonderful holiday concerts last week.  A special thank you to all of the students who participated as well!  Both evenings were terrific opportunities to see the talented musicians we have!  It is truly a wonderful gift to our school community to have these opportunities for our students. Thank you to all of the parents who support our band and chorus!

Have a wonderful week!

Sincerely,

Kathryn Nikas,  Principal

Math News!

With the gift giving season upon us I thought I would offer a link to a website giving ideas of books with mathematical themes.  The Reading Nook site offers ideas grouped together by topics like multiplication/division, fractions, geometry, money, measurement, time etc. You can click on each topic and see a variety of books with photos and brief descriptions.

http://www.thereadingnook.com/math/

I also want to let you know about a website called Free Rice.  This is a non-profit website run by the United Nations World Food Program.  It has two goals.  One is to provide education to everyone for free.  The second is to help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.  This is made possible by the generosity of the sponsors who advertise on the site.

Just go to www.freerice.com

Click on Subject at the top and you will see Math and can click on Multiplication Tables.  They have other subjects also available.

10 grains of rice are donated for each correct answer.  You do not have to do anything.  It registers automatically and keeps track of everything for you.  It even shows a bowl of rice filling up as you play!  Make a donation and practice your math facts all at once!

I want to congratulate the Online Line Math Teams for doing a fabulous job on their first contest and recognize our top scorers from each grade.  Kyle Dement in grade 3, Emily Hardy in grade 4, Devin Ralph and Hoalan Zhan in grade 5 and Maddie Canelli, Juliana Katz, Kellie Therrien and Jack Miller in grade 6.

Our Math Olympiad Teams also recently had a contest and did amazing work on these very difficult problems.  These students truly impress me with their determination and persistence!  For this contest we had three students with all five questions answered correctly.  They were Maddie Canelli and Corey Denn in grade 6 and Caitlin Bolzan in grade 4.  Congratulations to those students and to all who participated

Music News

Community Thank you to the Chorus!

We are very grateful to the Spofford Pond Chorus for providing music at the ANnual West Boxford Winter Festival on December 3.

Music Class News

Grade 3:

Many students are progressing very well on their recorder. Please help your child find time to practice at home. This is part of their weekly homework!  Students should practice a minimum of three times per week for 15 minutes each time.  Because music is learned through repetition practicing one day a week for an hour does not work.

Students are assessed on their playing--fingering, producing a good sound, musicality and note reading. Without practice their grades may suffer.

Grade 4:

Dona Nobis Pacem is a piece that students have been learning since September. It is a three-part song sung entirely in Latin and means "Grant Us Peace."

Students are being assessed on their use of head voices (singing), blending, breath control and rhythm recognition. They have just completed their vocal maps for Dona Nobis and are making connections between their voice placement and melodic direction.

Grade 5:

Sea Shanties galore! Students in grade 5 are completing a year-long project in singing, playing and composing sea shanties. These songs are very old and were often sung on sailing vessels as the men worked.

Students are being assessed on their singing voices, pitch recognition, sight-singing ability and performance in the classroom.

Grade 6:

So far, students in Grade 6 have completed a partial world tour in music having visited and sung songs from Australia, Polynesia, Ghana and Ukraine. Up next: Portugal!

Students are being assessed on pitch recognition, sight-singing using solfege (do, re, mi, fa, sol, la), breath control, musicality while singing, musicality while folk dancing and peer work.

Keep singing!

Mrs. Galardi

Sponsor A Child Thank You!

Dear Parents, Students and Staff at the Cole and Spofford Pond Schools

Thanks to donors like you, the Sponsor a Child Program has provided 42 children just this year with a holiday to remember. Each of these children will receive fifteen wrapped presents of clothing, toys and other items generously donated by our students and their families.  Your gifts not only took care of these children, but many others will receive lap desks, additional clothing and sleeping bags.

We were also able to provide the Santa's Helper program in Salisbury with a check for one thousand dollars. Your donation will be used to purchase clothing, food, and other items for families in need. Again, thank you for all of your generous gifts and most importantly the time you all took to help a child in need. Real generosity is doing something nice for someone who will never find out.  ~Frank A. Clark

Wishing you all a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season,

Kym Nugent,

Brownie Troop Thanks you!

The 3rd grade and 5th grade girls in Brownie Troop #62005 and Junior Troop #60417 would like to thank all those who donated to their very successful collection drive this November for the animals at the MSPCA.  As a culmination of their service project, the troops visited the MSPCA on November 29th and enjoyed a tour of the Nevins Farm property.  Thank you again for your generosity.
