Spofford Times Newsletter

Greetings!

As next week is parent conferences,  I encourage you to come with questions and/or discussion points that you would like to address with your child's teacher.  It is certainly a wonderful chance for us to connect with you about how your child is progressing in school.   We always treasure and value the time that we have to spend talking about each child's progress.  I request that each parent come on time to the scheduled conference.  We have a limited amount of time dedicated for parent conferences and our desire is to provide each family a full opportunity for dialogue.

For the next few weeks, our students will be experiencing a great deal of excitement because of the holiday season.  In school we will be continuing to keep the routines that the children expect and are accustomed to.  We recognize that at this time of year, family schedules can become hectic with holiday events.  However, the teachers and children will continue to keep the curriculum pace and therefore will need your support in helping the boys and girls stay focused.  You can help us by maintaining normal after school routines and bedtime routines.   Keeping your bedtimes will also allow children to come each day refreshed and ready to learn.

As you well know, this time of year, as joyous as it can be, can also be stressful. Children are also vulnerable to this stress.  That is why we value the consistent and normal daily activities to anchor any potential emotional responses.    We all appreciate your continued support and understanding with this.

Have a terrific week!

Sincerely,

Kathryn Nikas,  Principal

Be a Buddy, Not a Bully!

Olweus Bullying Prevention and Intervention Program Information

Definition of Bullying:
Simple Definition:

Bullying is when someone repetitively says or does mean things to another person.

It is being mean to another person on purpose, there is an imbalance of power and it is a repetitive act.

Four Olweus Rules

1. We will not bully others.

2.We will try to help students that are bullied.

3.  We will try to include students who are left out.

4.  If we know that someone is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at   home.

Class Meetings are designed to teach students about bullying and  the meaning of the 4 rules.  They are also there to help students with the following:

  • To help students learn about their feelings and reactions
  • To build a sense of community
  • To learn more about the classroom culture
  • To provide a forum for dealing with bullying problems

News from the Art Room

Hello from the Art Room!  The students are doing great work!

Here is an update by grade of what they are up to:

Grade 3 have completed their Autumn Still Life painting using watercolor pencils on watercolor paper.  I am truly amazed at how beautiful they look.  I have created a display on the orange bulletin board across from the office next to the caf.  They can also be viewed on Artsonia.

The 3rd grades have also completed 3-D bird sculptures in the style of artist Niki De Ste. Phalle.  These colorful and whimsical birds are really beautiful and fun. They are going on display in the glass case in the foyer.  Some classes are already on view.  Look for them on Artsonia soon.

Grade 4 students learned about what it takes to make a 'clean print' with clear registration.  They had to add just the right amount of ink, hold the paper steady while printing, and apply even pressure across the whole surface.  They did a great job.  It is always exciting to flip your paper over and see the image 'magically appear'.  These images will also be available on Artsonia soon.

The 4th grades have started our next unit focusing on Native American Art.  They are looking at Zuni Animal carvings and choosing one animal to sculpt out of clay.  We will be glazing them and accessorizing them in the Zuni style.  In addition they will be creating a canvas bag with an image of their animal painted on it.  These are really cute!

Grade 5 students completed their tonal study collages of orchids.  These detailed collages incorporate light, medium and dark values or tonal ranges of one color family.  They are mounted on a vertical format.

They are currently working on a project inspired by the art of Portugal in recognition of the many Portuguese explorers.  (They are studying world explorers in social studies)  This unit has a 3-Dimensional and 2-Dimensional component.  For the 3-D part, they sculpted 'Portuguese Roosters' out of clay which will be colorfully glazed in the Portuguese style. They are also making 2-D painted portraits of their roosters using gouache paint and creating origami frames to house them.  I am very excited about this new unit!

Grade 6 students finished their 'Cursive Name Creatures' and they can now be viewed on Artsonia.

I have collaborated with the Spanish teachers on their current project:  'Calaveras', which are skeletons  inspired by decorations for the Mexican holiday 'The Day of the Dead'.  They are learning about this holiday as a cultural component in Spanish class.  The skeletons all have unique personalities.  Look for them on the display shelves in the school foyer !

Just a reminder:  Please log on to your student's Artsonia account and make sure your email is correct.  We have been getting some messages that we have some expired emails.  Also, it is never too late to join Artsonia! If you are new to the school, or new to Artsonia, you can download a permission slip from the Spofford Pond website and bring it in to me or Mrs. Dalton.

Also, now would be a great time to order products from Artsonia decorated with your student's artwork to have for holiday gifts!  The art department receives 15% of the profits of these sales which goes right back into our program.

Lastly, please consider sending your student to school with a smock on art day.  It doesn't have to be anything fancy.  An old, oversized shirt works great.

All the best,

Mrs. Davis

Spofford Band News

Just a few days left to order your Poinsettias, November 30th is the deadline! The Spofford Pond Band is selling poinsettias once again this year to help you with your holiday decorating.  Kane's in Danvers will once again provide the beautiful poinsettias.  We are pleased to offer two sizes - a 7" pot for only $17 and a 6" pot for only $10 with your choice of red, white or pink. Each plant will come beautifully wrapped in gold foil.  This is the band's biggest fundraiser of the year.  Proceeds will go toward busses, lighting for concerts and equipment needs, among other things.  Flyers will come home this week.  If you have any questions or want to get more involved in the Band Parent Organization, please contact Lianne Langill at aljlangill@verizon.net.

B.E.S.T.

Our B.E.S.T. of Wine & Women fundraiser will be held at the Gould Barn on February 9th.  If it is anything like last year's event, it promises to be extremely well-attended (not to mention a really fun night out!), so be sure to purchase your tickets early once they become available. The event consists of a girls-only night out where you'll get to learn about and sample a variety of wines, gourmet appetizers and desserts in the company of your friends and neighbors.  If you'd like to volunteer to help with decorating the Barn, working with the Wine Tasting host, or helping coordinate the catering, please e-mail Ellie Benson at ebenson@verizon.net.

Many of your children contributed to Legacy: Anthology of Student Poetry last year.  Only 50 copies remain of this wonderful collection of over 600 original poems written by our K-6 students during the 2010-2011 school year.  If you're looking for the perfect holiday gift for a grandparent, godparent, or your child, look no further.  Go to www.bestforboxford.org to reserve a copy of this celebration of your child's writing. For $25, you will receive a copy of the anthology PLUS a B.E.S.T. classic tote bag. Simply utilize the online or mail-in donation form and write in that the donation is for the purchase of the anthology. All proceeds benefit the Harriet Ernst Endowment Fund, one of B.E.S.T.'s funding sources for teacher grants. This project will not be repeated this year; don't wait to order as we anticipate the final copies will go quickly and they will not become available again!
