City Knits Newsletter
Hello Autumn October 2009
Summer's  memories are fading fast. The leaves are turning, and our thoughts are turning to knitting. We welcome the cooler stitching days of Autumn.

Both stores are again open on Mondays. Saturday hours for the Fisher Building are extended. The Fisher Theatre season opens with Legally Blonde (see website for details), and we are open to curtain every night there is theater, including Sunday for both performances.  We, at the Fisher Building, were wondering...."What would Elle knit?" You guessed it....it doesn't matter, so long as its pink! Come see our display in the lobby for pink-spiration.

In this issue we have our holiday gift guide - projects to fit your pocket book, schedule and attention span. Nothing comes from the heart quite like a gift from the hands.Yarn Birthday Cake

Gift Knitting Inspirations for the Holidays
Holiday Gift Giving is the perfect opportunity for us to share our love in fiber form with friends, family, coworkers and all.
Don't get caught with your needles or hooks down. These ideas will get you started for the gift giving seasons.

Linen Washcloths
are fun and easy to knit ,allowing you to experiment with different stitch patterns while creating a practical gift for your holiday party hostess or that girlfriend that loves to bathe with the finer fibers of life. Linen is the perfect fiber for water uses: it dries quickly, doesn't hold stains, and gets softer with use and each trip through the washer and drier.

The Ruffled Scrunchy Scarf: a delightful gift for young and old alike. This tape yarn does all the work of ruffles for you. Two quick skeins and you have created a fun look for the free spirit in your life.

The Leaf Neckerchief:  a thoughtful  and practical gift. This scarflette knits up easy and works well to hold out the winter winds. The pattern is from One Skein Wonders - a book just bursting with gifting inspiration.

sally wrap catch all The Catchall Wrap: Feeling like letting your imagination run wild? Try the catchall wrap! Grab 5 or more fibers that you love, cast on and let your design evolve. Each is different and unique just like the people to whom you give them.   Great way to use up that stash. We'd love to help you put one (or even two) together.

Knitting with the DSO
The Beaded Scarf:
One of our favorites sure to delight all who see it, this piece looks like a million bucks and its just simple garter stitch with beads. If you can knit the beginner scarf you can make this piece. Karen says: the biggest wow factor for the least technical know how.

llama silk knitted fingerless glove Holly WhilteHandwarmers: Holly has designed a special pair, ribbed with a centered braid, just for City Knits. Karen is cooking up a stocking cap to match. Your choice of Royal Llama silk, Karabella's classic Aurora 8, or the decadent Buffalo Gold for the deserving man (or woman) on your list. (Matching hat coming very soon!)

Mixed Fiber scarves, Felted bags, Hats and Mittens!!!!!
Our list is getting longer by the minute. Hurry in so we can help you get started on yours; there are fewer than 80 days left before Christmas  Nothing comes from the heart quite like a gift from the hands.
Spinning in the M.C.
vogue fall 2009 pink hatCity Knits of Mount Clemens hosts a talented group of about a dozen spinners (the fiber kind, not the biking kind) on the first Friday of every month, from 6-9 pm.  The yarns all look so beautiful while in progress. Spinning your own yarn gives you the ultimate control over the type of yarn you knit with.
Anyone with basic skills and a wheel is welcome to come spin and chat for the evening while catching up on everyone's latest projects. If you can't bring your own wheel, you can can "take one of ours for a spin" for a small fee. Both Jan and Shelly spin and can answer questions you may have about the process when you visit the Mt. Clemens store.

If you have always wanted to learn about creating your own yarn, either with a wheel or a spindle, private lessons are at available by appointment at both locations. Call to schedule your private lessons today with:

Shelly at Mt. Clemens: 586.469.9665.
Holly at the Fisher Building 313.872.9665.

Both stores stock roving, books, spindles, and a small selection of Louet wheels.
