City Knits - Urban Purls
Transit Dreams,  Super Bulky Ideas &
Mt. Clemens Class Updates
January 2009

This Volume of City Knits Urban Purls updates us on great classes at City Knits of Mt. Clemens and includes Karen's annual invitation to engage in "Moving Us Forward" by attending the annual meeting of Transportation Riders United, the nonprofit group dedicated to improving access and mobility to greater Detroit and making modern rapid transit a reality.  With commuter rail between Ann Arbor and Detroit expected to begin late 2010, and 2 different projects on the drawing board for Light Rail on Woodward Ave. between Downtown Detroit and Eight Mile Road, we are closer to "riding the rails" than we have been in decades. Next to yarn, transit is Karen's greatest passion. Plan to join Karen on Jan. 27, at 6:30 pm. Details below.

TRU's Annual Meeting
Come See the Future of Transit in Detroit!
It's a great day to look towards a bright future, which here in Detroit will include quality regional transit!  We've now got an official regional transit plan.  But do you know what's in it and what the next steps are?  Are you ready to help bring the plan to life?

Come to TRU's Annual Meeting to hear  John Hertel, "Detroit Transit Czar" and Director of the Regional Transportation Coordinating Council [RTCC]share:
·   Where and when light rail and other rapid transit are to be built,
·   How bus service and coordination will be improved,
·   The critical next steps in implementing the plan, and
·   How you can help make it happen.

Specialty Classes for Spring 2009/ Mount Clemens

Basic Worsted Mittens with Shelly Buckman

Sunday, Feb. 15  12-4pm, Tuition: $50 plus materials Learn to knit a warm, wooly mitten in this introductory class.  Students should be familiar with circular knitting, by whichever method they prefer (i.e. double points, magic loop, single small circular).  There is homework to be completed prior to class day.  Materials:  I skein worsted yarn such as Cascade 220, Shepherd's Wool, or Lamb's Pride.  Needle(s) in size 5.

Honeycomb Mittens with Shelly Buckman
Sunday, March 8  12-4pm, Tuition: $50 plus materials
Knit up these really cute mittens that are SIMPLE to make (really...only one color per row!)  The trick is to use slipped stitches.  Students should be comfortable with knitting in the round, and there is some pre-class homework.  Materials required:  1 skein solid color sportweight  such as Louet Gems or Berroco Ultra Alpaca Light and 1 skein multicolored wooly yarn such as hand-dyed Louet Gems, Lorna's Laces, or Cherry Tree Hill. Needles needed in size 4 or 5.

Knitting with the Magic Loop with Sandie Oden
Saturday, March 21  1-3pm, Tuition: $30
Learn to knit in the round with only 1 large circular needle; no more juggling your double points.  This method is not just for socks - it works well on sleeves and mittens too.  Please bring to class a ball of light colored, worsted practice yarn and a size 7-8 40" circular needle.

Shelly's "To Dye For" Workshop with Shelly Buckman
Sunday, March 29  12-5pm, Tuition: $75 (includes the cost of the kit)
Intimidated by hand-dyeing your own yarn?  Let Shelly show you how simple the process really is.  You'll do heat-set dyeing in the microwave and produce enough yarn to make socks (or mittens, hats, etc.).  The kits come in pre-packaged color blends so sign up early to get dibbs on the color blend you want.  Be sure to wear old clothes to class!

Finishing 101 with Sandie Oden
Saturday, April 11  1-4pm, Tuition: $50
Seams are a make-or-break point for most knitters.  Even a beautifully knit garment can look awful if the seams are done poorly.  Seaming can determine the difference between "homemade" and "handknit" garments.  This class will cover a variety of seam types you would normally encounter when knitting.  Improve your skills to the next level and be proud of your knitting!  There is pre-class homework to be completed.

Ambidextrous Knitting with Shelly Buckman
Sunday, April 19  12-4 Tuition: $50
Are you a rightie? Leftie? Picker or thrower?  Continental, English, or American?  Whichever hand you learned to knit with, there are times you've probably envied the "other" way.  There are advantages to being able to knit with either hand.  Come build some more neural connections in your brain by learning to knit with your opposite hand.  There is some pre-class homework.

3 Color Fair Isle Hat with Shelly Buckman
Sunday, April 26  12-4pm Tuition: $50 plus materials for the hat.
Learn to knit this cute City Knits pattern in either worsted-weight or chunky yarn.  We'll learn to manage the two colors in each row using time honored fair isle techniques.  Students need to be comfortable knitting in the round. We also suggest you take the Ambidextrous Knitting class as a warm up, in order to be comfortable using a yarn in each hand.  There is pre-class homework to prepare.  A materials list will be provided when you register for the class.

The Mysteries of Blocking with Shelly Buckman
Sunday, May 31  12-3pm, Tuition:$30
As part of the finishing of a project, you should consider the variety of ways to "block" or shape your knitted fabric.  The techniques will vary from fabric to fabric, or yarn to yarn.   Even the desired result will influence how you decide to block your piece.  Using the wrong way can damage all your hard work.  This informative class is a must for all knitters who wish to produce beautiful projects.  No materials needed.
