November 2009
Nov. 4 VOTE  -  Nov. 4  VOTE  -  Nov. 4 VOTE
 Blue, Red or Purple?
The Polls are open from 7 am to 8 pm, Tuesday November 4.   What will you be Stitchin' as you wait to vote and for the results to come in?  Huge voter turnout is expected, so stand up for knitting in public and democracy in action.  Bring something simple and compact to stitch in case you have to stand in line to cast your vote. You can weave the ends in as you watch the returns. And while you're out to vote, come by either City Knits location to see what's new and wonderful.  Send us a .jpg of your political season project, whether you voted blue, red or purple, and we'll post some on line.

Just Keeps Getting Better!
 New Classes & Expanded Space
Have you heard? The secret is out - the Mt. Clemens store is fabulous!  And getting more so each day, thanks to Jan, Shelly, Sandie, Elaine and Denise.  Walking into the store is like walking into a rainbow.  You just don't know where to look first.  And then there is the new expansion . . . .[see photo of a work in progress.]
If that isn't enough to entice you into the store, here are a few more tidbits:
  • City Knits of Mt. Clemens has a friendly, knowledgeable sales staff in Shelly, Jan, Denise and Elaine.  They are always willing to help you with that next project.
  • Our superb teaching staff of Amy, Diane, Jackie (our new crochet instructor), Shelly and Master Knitter Sandie, are second to none.
  • We have a very convenient class schedule and if you don't see a time that meets your needs, ask the staff and perhaps a time can be scheduled for you and a couple of your friends.
  • Specialty classes are scheduled on a varying basis.  Check out the current list for fall and  winter, including some original designs by the teaching staff.
  •  Last, we must mention our students.  All of our classes are as much social events as learning experiences.  When listening to the conversations at the table, you might think all these people have been friends forever.  You often hear someone say "I just love my class", or "I just had to get to knitting/crochet".

Knitters' Math with Shelly Buckman OK, we all get intimidated by math but as knitters, we need to be able to work some simple 4th grade multiplication and division.  Why?  To do: Gauge, yarn substitutions, yardages, compare yarns (yds/m/gr/oz and all those other abbreviations), and to pick sizes.  In short, you have to do your math to make sweaters you will enjoy.  Shelly will walk you slowly through the steps for all these mysterious calculations you thought only shop owners knew about. Easy  $20

City Knits at the Guardian Closes
Just not enough foot traffic. . .   We are sad to report that the City Knits' location, in the Guardian Building, closed permanently Wednesday, October 22, 2008. It was time to restructure City Knits so that we can continue to provide the finest in yarns, tools, books, accessories and classes at the Fisher Building in New Center Detroit, and our newly expanded Mt. Clemens location at 64 Cherry Street.

The decision to close our charming shoplette in the glorious Guardian Building was not easy, but essential. Sadly, there is currently just not enough foot traffic or sales volume to sustain a third location in Downtown Detroit's Central Business District.
Emphatically, City Knits, Inc. is NOT "Going out of Business."

We certainly hope that all of our Guardian customers will patronize our other two locations.  City Knits at the Fisher Building offers one hour of validated parking with purchase or class in the adjacent flat lot on Third, between W. Grand Blvd and Lothrop.  Loretta and Stephanie will continue to be on hand to serve you there.

It's been great serving you from the Guardian, and it was a great honor to be in such a glorious building.  You'll just have to travel a little farther to get your "fiber fix." See you soon at either the Fisher Building in Detroit or at 64 Cherry Street in Mt. Clemens. If you had yarn on hold or special order, please contact us 313.872.9665 in the Fisher Building so we can take care of your needs.

AMAZING! City Knits in the Fisher Building- Six years old on December 6, 2008.  ASTONISHING! City Knits of Mt. Clemens will celebrate both its first birthday and its expansion on December 6.  We are excited to celebrate our birthdays with the help of the Double Stitch Twins, Erika and Monika Simmons, co-authors of "Double Stitch," a fabulous creative book of wearable crocheted designs, with an urban sensibility. They've even offered to model some of their designs while they are "kicking it in the D."  There are rumors they will be making a special appearance at Friday evenings' "Unwind with Linda" at the Fisher Building.
