VALENTHINGS EVENT!
Your efforts help support our teachers!
Let's show our teachers a little TLC. Your loving donations will make this year's "Valenthings" event a success. Please consider making a financial or supply donation to San Marin PTSA "Valenthings" event. On February 10th, the PTSA will be showing our support and appreciation to all our teachers. We will put much needed classroom supplies out for teachers to choose from and provide them with a Valentine's Day lunch. Teachers will enjoy a wonderful lunch while shopping for their classroom. Suggested items: Kleenex, Paper towels, Hand Sanitizer, Dry erase markers, Electric staplers, pencils, red correcting pens....

Last weekend, the San Marin PTSA emailed forms, to all senior PTSA members, for the California PTA $500 Scholarship and the San Marin PTSA $250 Scholarship. In the event you are a member and did not receive an email, please go to the College and Career Center and pick up the forms or find the download information below..
CA PTA $500 Scholarship- Deadline 2/1/11. Last year our members won two from the CA PTA!
Applicants need: Recommendations, PTA Membership card, SM PTSA is a member of the 16th District, North Marin Council. More information can be found here SM PTSA Scholarship Two $250 Scholarships will be awarded. Submission deadline is 4/29/11. SM PTSA Scholarship form can be found here.

SAN MARIN SPEECH AND DEBATE TEAM - WINS AGAIN! For the second time in two weeks, the San Marin Speech and Debate Team has brought home another victory to San Marin! The debate team of Risa Weber and Matt Chiang won division trophies in Parliamentary Debate at the Dougherty High School debate contest in San Ramon. With over 60 teams in their division, Risa and Matt landed in the top 10 -- this was their first time ever in a debate competition. Our San Marin competitive team was formed last September and is competing through the Golden Gate Speech Association, a speech league of 40 high schools throughout the Bay Area. The team has also joined the California High School Speech Association, which will allow them to compete in state contests and invitational meets throughout California. The team is currently sponsored by Adam Williams and coached by retired teacher Karen Kenyon. Students interested in joining this academic club should talk to Risa Weber, student president or Mr. Williams, our advisor. |

INTERESTED IN LAW ENFORCEMENT? The Marin County Sheriff Youth Academy is designed to provide students with hands-on training to promote interest in law enforcement / public service as a future career. The program consists of courses designed to educate students in the areas of criminal law, communications, patrol, investigations, CSI, custody, defense tactics, Special Response Team, Search & Rescue, Marine Patrol & Dive Team Unit, Mock Trial and Ride-Along. This program is composed of 20 students ranging from grades 10-12 from throughout the county. Students meet on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 4-6 p.m. for 8 weeks at the Sheriff's Dept. in the Marin County Civic Center. The program begins on March 1st and concludes on May 3rd. Space is limited, so sign up now! Applications for both of these opportunities are available in the College and Career Center

The deadline for ordering your 2010-2011 San Marin yearbook is approaching. You may have noticed that the yearbook order form was not included in this year's Back-To-School packet. This was done intentionally in order to utilize an on-line ordering system. Ordering is quick and easy. Just log on to www.YearbookOrderCenter.com or call 1-866-287-3096 for assistance.
If you do not wish to use the on-line ordering method, you can also place your order directly with the school. Just pick up an order card and submit payment to the front office. But act quickly before the deadline.

Community Service/Leadership Academy Opportunity (40-55 hours)
Spend your spring break or a week of your summer at an orphanage and a day care in La Mision Mexico with other high school students from Marin and Sonoma with Be2Live.
Practice your Spanish (knowing Spanish is not required), learn new skills and make a difference in the lives of others. A typical week includes construction work, playing with/teaching the children, delivering food and necessities to needy families and possibly assisting a dentist or veterinarian. The Spring Break trip is April 9th-14th (cost: $645) and the summer trip is June 25th-July 1st ($690). Cost includes: Transportation, food, lodging, project costs, help with fundraising and pre-trip training. La Mision is a small town an hour south of San Diego on the Pacific Coast. Hundreds of students and adults from Marin and Sonoma have participated in this trip over the last 5 years.

Wanted: Teen Girl Ambassadors to plan the First Annual Teen Girl Conference!
Marin Women's Commission is looking for Teen girls (ages 13-18) to help plan the 2011 Teen Girl Conference! The Conference will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2011, at the Embassy Suites, San Rafael. This exciting Conference will offer workshop/break-out sessions on topics like Friends: Real or the Other Kind; Too Stressed to Think?!; The BF/GF Zone and Tools for Bad Situations with experienced facilitators and presenters, and an Teen Exhibit Mall, featuring booths with information and resources from businesses and local service providers. Our keynote speaker is Jess Weiner of Seventeen Magazine and a Global Ambassador for the Dove Self-Esteem Fund.
What does a Teen Girl Ambassador do? The Teen Girl Ambassadors will meet monthly with a subcommittee of the Marin Women's Commission to design the details of the conference. The Ambassadors will select the presenters/facilitators of the different break-out sessions; contribute to the design of the Teen Girl Conference website and the details of the Conference; meet other teen girls from across the County, spread word about the Conference to friends and classmates, and earn Community Service Credits too!
