Mustang Mock Trial Competition - January 29th & February 5th People vs. Jesse Woodson
San Marin Mock Trial will compete against other Marin County High Schools in the annual Marin County Mock Trial Competition to be held January 29th and February 5th at the Marin County Courthouse. Our Mock Trial Team has been practicing for 3 months to prosecute and defend the case of People v. Jesse Woodson.
Jesse Woodson is on trial for cyber-bullying and assault of Angel Sterling. The Mustangs prosecution team will attempt to convince a jury of local Marin attorneys that Mr. Woodson is guilty of both charges, while a defense team from Tam, Drake, MC, Branson, Marin Academy or Terra Linda tries to secure a not guilty verdict. Meanwhile, the Mustangs' defense team will try go for acquittal against another school's prosecution team. Trials are presided over by Superior Court Judges, with students acting as attorneys, witnesses and courtroom personnel. After each school has conducted 4 trials (two prosecution and two defense), the winning school will represent Marin County at the California State Competition. |
Playwrights in the Making San Marin Advanced Drama has two finalists in the
Marin Theatre Company Young Playwrights Festival. This is quite an honor only the committee only chooses eight plays out of the over 50 submitted. Josh Costello Artistic director of Expanded programs said this," We could only accept a maximum of two finalists from any one school. Narrowing it down to two from San Marin was difficult."
Congratulations to the following students:
Steve Jun, Sarah Marthinson and Julia Raven for their play Quite Literally
Gurleen Rai, Lindsey Zecherle, and Katie Kushnir for their play, The Challa
The plays will be performed at Marin Theatre Company on Monday, February 7.
Bob Smart Drama Competition
Advanced drama students participated in the Bob Smart Drama Competition at American River College in Sacramento Jan. 15th and 16th. This event has replaced the state drama competition that used to be held at Sac State. Forty-one participating schools performed 4 monologues, 2 scenes and a one-act play.
Rachel Smith received a gold medal for her monologue from Henrik Ibsen's, A Doll's House and did a Command performance in front of audience of approximately 1500 people.
Andrew Kulp received a bronze medal for his monologue from William Inge's, The Dark At the Top of the Stairs.
Lindsey Campbell and Elliott Hanson received a "most improved medal" for their scene from Christopher Durang's, For Whom the Southern Bell Tolls. This medal shows how well students can take direction and immediately change their performance based on judges comments.
Students also performed a very thoughtful play, Teen Mommalogues. Teen Mommalogues is a performance based on interviews conducted in the San Luis Obispo area with teens, parents of teens and teen parents. The play is a realistic and honest view of the difficulties of being a teen parent and the challenges teen face when deciding to become sexually active. The play has been performed in cooperation with Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo (in collaboration with youth) for the last eight years. We received permission from them to perform the play for the Bob Smart Drama Competition and for San Marin Health Classes. Student Director, Lauren DeBiasio, received many compliments. Several parents felt all high school students in the Novato should see this play.
Drama Teacher, Linda Kislingbury said, "I am so proud ot the students for taking on this difficult issue of teen pregnancy. Their performance was very thought provoking. They worked lunch hours, after school and night time rehearsals to get the play, monologues and scenes ready for competition (a week after winter break). My students are a dedicated group. I am so proud of them." |
