Please join us on Wednesday March 25th for our annual Open House event. From 6:30 pm-7:30 pm, you will have an opportunity to stop by and learn about what is happening at San Marin High School. 

Individual departments will be meeting in the room listed below. By visiting the department's room, you will have a chance to learn more about our faculty and see the interesting things our students are doing in their classes, as well as learn about what San Marin has to offer your child. Please remember that this is not a time for parent/teacher conferences. You may drop by at your convenience any time between 6:30 pm and 7:30 pm.

SAN MARIN ROBOTICS, THE PENGUIN EMPIRE TEAM, COMPETES IN FIRST ROBOTICS COMPETITION
 
San Marin Robotics Club, the Penguin Empire Team, has completed the 2nd (2009-2010) Build Season.

The Robot, Aurora Borealis (The Northern Light) has been shipped and the team is ready for the FIRST Robotics Regional Competition to be held at U.C. Davis, starting Friday, March 27 and lasts until Sunday, March 29.

Hope to see you there to cheer for the team and watch this exciting event!

DRAMA DEPARTMENT NEWS

Beginning /Intermediate Drama Cafe Theatre -
April 2, 2009  Student Center 7:00 pm
Price:  $5.00 at the door
Students will be presenting one act plays (Juvie, Second Class, Class Action) and monologues from The Laramie Project.
 
Don't miss this great event.

The Edinburgh Cast of Charlie Cox Runs with Scissors will go on the road to Palo Alto High School on May 22 and the Marin County Fair on July 5 to present their powerful play in preparation for their four performances on the World stage at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland (Aug 4-17).

The Advanced Drama class is also working hard on a project with District Attorney's Office of Marin County.  The class is in rehearsal for the taping (May 30, 31) of a public service video dealing with the problems of on- line chat and how it can lead to serious consequences.  Students are learning a new skill -- working GirlsLaxWinner2008in front of the camera. On March 23, Jack Hanson, well known news broadcaster will talk to the class about his years in front of the camera and give us all some helpful tips.

Rehearsals are in full swing for the spring play -  Bright Ideas.  Mark you calendars now May 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 11!!!  This hysterical black comedy (a modern day Macbeth) deals with  a young yuppie couple trying to get their three year old into the right  pre-school.  You won't want to miss this one!!!        Top

This play is a delicious  black comedy about a couple,  Gen and Josh Bradley who trying to get their little three- year- old son Mac into the "right" preschool  "Bright Ideas Early Childhood Development Academy."   
 
We have just cast the spring Play Bright Ideas.  Mark your calendars in May for this hysterical play.  You may never look at preschool or pesto the same way again.

The District Attorney's office will meet with San Marin Drama's Honors Drama Team on Thursday, February 12 to go over script revisions for the project on which we are working which discusses the dangers of On-line Chat.
The drama department is working to schedule command performances of Charlie Cox Runs with Scissors.

PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association)
Girls Softball 2007 Champion
 

Thanks to generous donations from PTSA members at the beginning of the school year, the San Marin PTSA purchased classroom supplies for each San Marin teacher. These supplies were delivered during the annual Valenthings event.  Thank you to Denise Rosenbach and Nancy Zanardi for organizing Valenthings and to Denise Sockolov and Linda Williams for providing a delicious lunch to the teachers.

There were several district winners from the Reflections program in art, photo and literature.  Congratulations to our students!

The San Marin PTSA is looking for parents who would like to participate in supporting the teachers and the students of San Marin.  Previous experience with the PTSA is not necessary.  Please contact Melissa Nuyens (please refer to school directory for phone number) if you are interested.

      The next PTSA meeting is April 8th at 7:00 in the library.

NEWS FROM THE  COLLEGE and CAREER CENTER

I have just finished visiting with all the Sophomore classes and doing a career exploration project. We researched careers on our "Bridges" program (access through PrepHQ) and the student were to pick three careers that interested them. They had to research these careers, telling the class about the education needed, earning power and something interesting about that career. The students presented in front of the class and the class voted on which career they thought the student wanted. Presenter were awarded for how well they bluffed the class and prizes were awarded to the winners. This project was through the English classes and the students then were given and extended assignment by their teachers. Be sure to ask them about what careers they explored.

 

I have now also completed orientation with all the Freshman's Health classes. The students met with me in the Library and I spoke to them about the services offered to them through the College and Career Center. I encouraged the students to take advantage of all opportunities presented to them during their high school experience to better prepare them for their next step. We also covered the different college systems and they all registered on PrepHQ. Be sure to have them show you the website and familiarize yourself with this fabulous resource.

 

On Tuesday, May 19th San Marin will be having a school wide Career Day. As the coordinator I am looking for parents who would be willing to come and speak about their careers or volunteer for the event. Please email me if you are interested in participating. Last year we had a "Green Career Day" and it was a big success. We are broadening our spectrum of careers and will be gathering information from the students regarding which types of careers they are interested in. My email is fcunnie@nusd.org. The annual bowl for kids sake fundraising event is coming up, and we would like to get some of you students involved.  Teen night is an excellent way for high school students to get involved in doing
community service, and it is a fun easy way for students to earn service hours.  This year bowl for kids sake will be held March 28th at Country Club Bowl in San Rafael. There will be an informative meeting in the Career Center Monday, March 9th at lunch. Sign up on PrepHQ under the college tab to attend and be reminded.

ARCHITECTURE, ENGINEERING, CONSTRUCTION (AEC) JOB SHADOW DAY:    This unique job shadow experience provides hands-on career exploration opportunities for students to observe the world of work, see the relevance of what they are learning in school, and get the chance to find out more about careers in architecture, engineering and construction.  Students shadow local professionals for the morning and join the many other student shadows and their hosts for a luncheon/debrief of their experiences.

Canal Alliance Volunteer Opportunities
 
*Supply Healthy Snacks to our Students

Your group is invited to prepare healthy snacks (such as sandwiches, fruit, or cheese and crackers, and a healthy drink) for approximately 75 teens enrolled in our Youth Educational Development Program (YEDP).  This project is offered from on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 2-4:30.
 
First, we invite you to come to Canal Alliance for a tour of our organization. Then, we thought it fun for YEDP staff to accompany you to a local market to obtain the items. We would greatly appreciate it if you could purchase
these items on our behalf. Generally a $75 donation would cover the cost of the snacks. We are happy to complete a donation receipt for your generosity. Afterwards we will return to Canal Alliance, prepare the snacks, and then distribute them to the students. Not only will you be providing a nutritious snack, you will be helping to reinforce our goal of fostering a wholesome and healthy environment for our teens. This is a wonderful opportunity for groups including student organizations and clubs, families and employee
teams. This project is perfect for 5-7 people.
 
*Food Bank Distribution
 
Every Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 10:00-12:30, we open our on site food bank to our community. After we return from the Marin Community Food Bank, you will help upload the van, sort the items -usually consisting of breads, grains, fruits, juices, vegetables, milk, and canned goods, stock our shelves, assemble different packages of food, and then help us distribute the food to the community members that come to our doors for such assistance. There is usually a flurry of activity in our waiting area during this time. We usually have very little left over. This would be a fun experience for your group, and an excellent way to witness how our organization has a direct impact on our community by providing a basic need. This project is recommended for 3-5 people.
 
*Youth Educational Development Program Aide: Spring 2009
 
This opportunity is offered M-TH afternoons here at Canal Alliance. We have 3 Middle School classes and 2 classes for High School. We also have college students who might need one on one help arranged on a case by case basis.
 
All of these would be great opportunities for college students who are currently studying education, or currently retired professionals from the educational field. We do also invite high school students, preferably ages 16 and over, to work with our middle school program. Volunteers should work well under limited supervision with both students and staff. Volunteers not only help our students with homework, but also with Canal Alliance sponsored projects. Additional responsibilities include preparing snacks and refreshments, supervising groups during outdoor and indoor activities, helping with clean-up. Volunteers should be available at least one full shift per week beginning January 12 through May 29, 2009. While being familiar with Spanish is helpful, it is not required. Volunteers ages 18+ will be required to undergo a background check which includes fingerprinting. Volunteers that are willing to transport students for field trips are required to provide a copy of his or her DL and insurance. Driving is not a required responsibility. Patience and flexibility are musts.

This is spring cleaning time for our beautiful town. Volunteer groups, families, clubs, neighborhoods, business and individuals from all around Novato will pick up litter from city street, median strips, cree banks, parks and bike paths. "Adopt-and -Island"
 
Participants can pick up litter, weeds, or with prior approval landscape their island now.

The Pan-Napa Challenge is a one-day bicycling event held annually to raise money for Novato schools.

The second annual Pan-Napa Challenge will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2009, in beautiful Napa valley.

Last year eighteen dads got together for a fun day of riding in Napa Valley and raised $28,000 for Hamilton Elementary School. This year we're expanding the challenge to include riders from all 16 Novato schools. Now it's your turn to raise money for your local Novato school. The ride is open to parents, teachers, students, and anyone else who wants to help out.

How The Challenge Works

Riders sign up to ride one of several routes. We'll have beautiful and fun routes of 10, 25, and 50 miles (or more!). The pace is as leisurely or aggressive as you make it. Last year half the riders rode 25 miles, and the other half rode 50.

Donations are collected through the sponsorship of riders. Visit the website to sponsor a rider from your school.  Riders allocate their donations to the schools of their choice. All donations are tax deductible. Net proceeds from the event go to the Novato schools as allocated by the riders - YOU have a choice on which school to sponsor! 

Volunteers:  On the day of the event we all get together for a big party in Napa. While your riders are out cranking those pedals there will be food, games, socializing, and plenty of fun for the kids.

SCHOOL FUEL VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Earn community service hours.
Students needed to volunteer to man 1 and 1/2 hour shifts outside Diablo and Hamilton Safeway Stores to sign up the Novato Community Safeway Club Card
holders to support School Fuel through eScrip.

Shifts are available most Thursdays & Fridays - 4-6pm; Saturdays - 10-4pm.  
Training and supplies will be provided at your shift.

  • Novato"A CENTURY OF GENTLE SEASONS, A HISTORY OF NOVATO" DVD SALES TO BENEFIT SCHOOL FUEL
     

    Zan Media has recently released a one-hour DVD about Novato called "A Century of Gentle Seasons, A History of Novato."  Owners Don and Chris Scioli (local San Marin residents) produced this one hour video as a "small tribute to a great city."

    The business is named after the first initials of their three children, Zack, Alex and Niki -- who all attended Novato's public schools from kindergarten through high school. It's a fun, fast paced and entertaining peek into what makes Novato so unique, community centric and slightly eccentric. There's a lively section on our schools in the past and present, hosted by longtime resident and Novato educator Louise Koenig, and even a section that recalls the antics of Principal Lu Sutton, who always wore black dresses and could beat all the young boys at marbles! You might even see yourself walking the streets during one of the annual Novato events showcased in this video.

    NOVATO HISTORY MUSEUM NEEDS DOCENTS

    GirlsLaxWinner2008The Novato History Museum is looking for docents to participate in the annual spring tours for "Our Novato Third Graders." If you love history and are interested in learning about the town that you live in, please consider donating a small portion of your time to share with the children of Novato.....Novato history is part of NUSD's Third Grade Curriculum.

    Some of you may even have accompanied your child on this field trip when they were in the third grade. The beauty of this program for docents is that NO EXPERIENCE IS NEEDED. You will be trained with materials and by shadowing one of our "seasoned docents" and you will docent only when YOU feel comfortable.

    The Third Grade program takes place from March until the week before school closes for the year in June.

    Please attend a Docent Orientation Meeting to be held on Tuesday, March 3rd at 10am. at the Margaret Todd Senior Center.

    Your participation would be invaluable and much appreciated.
