Dr. Robert Vieth |

D ear Parents and Students,
The faculty and administration at San Marin High School have been working hard at making student achievement our number one priority, with the overall goal that more students will attend and be successful in college. After reviewing our practices, we have decided that we need to increase our student recognition process for 9th, 10th and 11th grade.
If you have ever attended the Senior Awards night, you know that we have a good model for recognizing student achievement. By scheduling the Senior Awards late in the final year, we recognize that it is too late to change student motivation and desire to succeed. For this reason, we will have one high quality awards assembly by class about a week before STAR testing (mid April) that will be modeled after the Senior Awards Night.
We do not have all the details worked out, but we will have a Principal Academic Medal of Honor for all students with a cumulative weighted GPA of 4.0 or higher and an Honor Roll for students with a weighted GPA of 3.00 and above. Other academic awards will be given by School Departments for excellence and improvement. We will also have School and Community Awards for significant community service. The final event at these grade level assemblies will be an announcement of all the students who improved all their CST (STAR) scores last year compared to the year before; or they also qualify if they score advanced on all tests. This group of students will then be eligible for one of two $100 scholarships per grade level. The assembly will conclude with drawing two names from all qualifying students. Every student in the school could qualify for this drawing if they show improvement in all areas.
This assembly will be for all students in a particular grade, and we hope that it will be motivational in nature and better recognize our hardest working students. The administration receives approximately $800 from the PTSA each year and these scholarships are the way we choose to spend this money this year.
Sincerely,
Robert C. Vieth, Ph.D. Principal |
ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS' MESSAGES

Ms. Megan Pettis
More than 60 percent of the nearly 40,000 first-time freshmen admitted to the CSU require remedial education in English, mathematics or both. These 25,000 freshmen all have taken the required college preparatory curriculum and earned at least a B grade point average in high school. The cost in time and money to these students and to the state is substantial. Moreover, these students are confused by seemingly having done the right things in high school only to find out after admission to the CSU that they need further preparation. For additional information, you can visit the EAP website at: http://www.calstate.edu/eap/
What does this mean for students at San Marin? Current juniors will be taking the EAP Placement test as a part of their STAR exams in math and English taken April 27-May 9, 2009. Students should try their best on both of these exams. Based on the results of the EAP, students can test "Ready for College", or "Did Not Demonstrate College Readiness on This Assessment" in both English and math, and in math, students can also test "Ready for College- Conditional".
Students who test "Ready for College" will not need to take additional placement exams for CSU. Students, who test "Did Not Demonstrate College Readiness on This Assessment" in English, can take the Expository Reading and Writing class (ERWC) as their 4th year of English (earning a C or better) to meet the entrance requirements in English without having to take an additional placements test. Students who test "Ready for College-Conditional" in Math can take a 4th year of Math that is Algebra 2 or above (Statistics or Pre-Calculus are recommended to fulfill this option for students who were not planning to take a 4th year of math). As the results of the EAP are not release until August, it is highly recommended that students take ERWC and an additional math class as outlined above during their senior year if they are unsure of their ability to test into college level classes.
We have learned that community colleges are interested in using EAP results as well. It is possible that by the fall of 2010, some or all community colleges will allow students who have tested "Ready for College" on the EAP or received a C or higher in ERWC will not have to take any remedial English courses when they start at the community college. |
Mr. Mike Casper
The winter sports season has been exciting and competitive. The wrestling team has been competing at a very high level, and had against some of the top tier programs such as Marin Catholic and Terra Linda. The long hours of weight training and conditioning has paid off for our wrestlers. Great job! The boys and girls varsity basketball teams are both competing for playoff positions in the ever so strong MCAL. The boys team, which some may argue is in a rebuilding year, is right in the playoff hunt and their playoff fate may be decided the final game of the season against Terra Linda. Mr. Pitti, who coached wins this year against Branson and Marin Catholic, has guided a very young team to a playoff contender. We're proud of our boys' team. The girls' team is in a different situation. The girl's team was built to make a serious run at the MCAL title this year. Mr. Lucia has done a tremendous job guiding and building this team. We hope the girls make a good run in the playoffs and possibly clinch an NCS playoff berth. It's been a pleasure supervising the basketball games this year. Both our boys and girls teams know they have a shot at winning every time they walk out on the court. Great job!
The EAP writing test for all 11th grade students will be administered March 3rd in the English 11 classes. Students who are absent on March 3rd, can make up the test March 4th. The CAHSEE exam for all 11th and 12th grade students who haven't passed is being administered March 17th (English/Language Arts) starting at 8:23 am & March 18th (Math) starting at 9:05 am in the library. Please see or call me if you have any questions about the exam or after school tutorial.
STAR testing begins Monday April 27, 2009. I've just begun planning the schedule. Expect a schedule posted on the website and sent in the April newsletter. The tentative plans are to test the entire week of April 27-May 1, and complete make up tests the following week. Students will test in their second period classes and report to school at 8:23. There will be no block schedule the week of April 27-May 1. It's extremely important all the students take the STAR tests. The results of the tests are used to assess what students have or have not learned during the school year. We learn a great deal of critical information from the STAR data, and use it as an important form of assessment. We would hope the parents do what's best for their child and school, and direct their children to not only take the test, but give their best effort. The San Marin administration and teachers will be reviewing the results of the tests so we can improve the education programs at San Marin High School. | | |

| "CRAZY FOR YOU" MUSICAL
March 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15 - Tickets @ Front Office

Over 100 students and parents are preparing for the upcoming production of "Crazy For You', the spring musical at San Marin High. The winner of three Tony Awards (including Best Musical), Crazy For You is a high energy comedy which includes mistaken identity, plot twists, fabulous dance numbers and classic Gershwin music.
The show opens on March 6 for two weekends. The Friday and Saturday shows begin at 8PM and the Sunday Matinees start at 2PM. Tickets can be purchased at the San Marin office for $8 in advance. Tickets at the door are $10 and reserved seats are available for Saturday performances for $25.
"Crazy For You" has come full circle at San Marin. When San Marin Music first performed it in 2000, Samantha Maas-Baldwin and Kate Kenyon were two of the featured performers. Now Samantha, a full time music teacher at San Marin is assistant director, and Kate, a dance teacher at San Marin is the show's choreographer. San Marin was also able to use a car and truck that were built by Harold Bexton and crew for the 2000 show in this year's production.
Crazy For You is the story of Bobby Child, a well-to-do 1930's playboy, who's dream in life is to dance on stage. And despite the serious efforts of his mother and fiancée, Bobby achieves his dream!
The story takes place in New York City high society and in Deadrock, Nevada where we find a slow paced life and singing cowboys.
The show is directed by Pat Nims. Producer and Music Director is Emily Gates. Technical Director and volunteer coordinator is Marty Garcia-Cotter. Many parents and volunteers have given up their Saturdays for the past two months to help the students with the elaborate two story sets required by the production.

UNIQUE ART FOR SALE
The San Marin High Art Boosters had a sale of unique art at the Jazz 'n Java Concert on February 6th.
There's been a special request to have some of the art for sale in the front office.
If you missed the concert and would like to still purchase some of these items made by the students, there are comic books and magnetic bookmarks which are watercolor strips in shades of red or green. The magnets are on each side of the bookmark allowing it to hold onto the page that it's placed on. In addition, there is a variety of other items still for sale - photos of original art made by the students into notecards, etched glass flower vases and spoon rests made out of slumped glass bottles (melted glass bottles in a kiln at over 1,500 degrees).
These last few items are not in the office, so contact the art teachers or Vicki Campbell at vlcampbell@comcast.net ART BOOSTERS CALL FOR SUPPORT If your time is limited, please consider a donation of $15 or more to Art Boosters. We've had 25 families donate to Art Boosters so far, but we have over 300 students taking some type of art class at San Marin. That's only 8% of the art family.
Your donation will help purchase drawing and painting supplies, sculpture materials, glass art and photography supplies. Our wish list of needed items is long, but the funding is very short. Without the help of parents like you and our fundraising events, there is a shortage of money for supplies. Your student and our school will benefit immensely!
Please make your check payable to San Marin Art Boosters and mail it to school, or your student can bring it to the Art teacher or the front office. THANK YOU! Your help is very much appreciated!
Please join Mary's Pizza Shack in supporting SAN MARIN HIGH ART BOOSTERS at a "Dine & Donate" Fundraiser all day on Thursday, March 12, 2009!
Mary's Pizza Shack in Novato will donate 20% of your bill to San Marin Art Boosters if you present the special Mary's flyer when you pay your bill on March 12th. The flyer must be presented when you pay your bill on March 12th for Art Boosters to receive 20% of the sale.
Enjoy great pizza and Italian food while supporting Art Boosters. The fundraiser includes Dine-In, Take-Out, Delivery and Gift Card Purchases. If you buy a gift card on March 12th, you can use it later anytime at your convenience at Mary's Pizza Shack in Novato. Make as many copies as you like and give them to your family, friends, neighbors, church group, and clubs or business associates. The San Marin Art Boosters appreciates your support! THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS
We'd like to thank the new sponsors of the San Marin Art Boosters. Your recent donations of money and art goods is so appreciated! It will help boost the creative work of the students.

NEWS FROM THE COLLEGE and CAREER CENTER
I have just finished visiting with all the Sophomore classes and doing a career exploration project. We researched careers on our "Bridges" program (access through PrepHQ) and the student were to pick three careers that interested them. They had to research these careers, telling the class about the education needed, earning power and something interesting about that career. The students presented in front of the class and the class voted on which career they thought the student wanted. Presenter were awarded for how well they bluffed the class and prizes were awarded to the winners. This project was through the English classes and the students then were given and extended assignment by their teachers. Be sure to ask them about what careers they explored.
I have now also completed orientation with all the Freshman's Health classes. The students met with me in the Library and I spoke to them about the services offered to them through the College and Career Center. I encouraged the students to take advantage of all opportunities presented to them during their high school experience to better prepare them for their next step. We also covered the different college systems and they all registered on PrepHQ. Be sure to have them show you the website and familiarize yourself with this fabulous resource.
On Tuesday, May 19th San Marin will be having a school wide Career Day. As the coordinator I am looking for parents who would be willing to come and speak about their careers or volunteer for the event. Please email me if you are interested in participating. Last year we had a "Green Career Day" and it was a big success. We are broadening our spectrum of careers and will be gathering information from the students regarding which types of careers they are interested in. My email is fcunnie@nusd.org. Thank you in advance for your help and support of this fun and enriching opportunity for our students.

SENIOR FASHION SHOW
The annual Senior Fashion Show and dinner is held every year in March and is one of the school's largest fundraising events.
The senior class has been able to raise over $10,000 each year for the past four years to go towards their senior ball. We cannot do this without parent support, donations, and involvement.
So please, if you would like to be a part of this magnificent event or have an item you would be willing to donate for the silent auction, live auction or raffle please contact Ryan Fedoroff at rfedoroff@nusd.org. We appreciate all your support! |

Your group is invited to prepare healthy snacks (such as sandwiches, fruit, or cheese and crackers, and a healthy drink) for approximately 75 teens enrolled in our Youth Educational Development Program (YEDP). This project is offered from on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 2-4:30. First, we invite you to come to Canal Alliance for a tour of our organization. Then, we thought it fun for YEDP staff to accompany you to a local market to obtain the items. We would greatly appreciate it if you could purchase these items on our behalf. Generally a $75 donation would cover the cost of the snacks. We are happy to complete a donation receipt for your generosity. Afterwards we will return to Canal Alliance, prepare the snacks, and then distribute them to the students. Not only will you be providing a nutritious snack, you will be helping to reinforce our goal of fostering a wholesome and healthy environment for our teens. This is a wonderful opportunity for groups including student organizations and clubs, families and employee teams. This project is perfect for 5-7 people. *Food Bank Distribution Every Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 10:00-12:30, we open our on site food bank to our community. After we return from the Marin Community Food Bank, you will help upload the van, sort the items -usually consisting of breads, grains, fruits, juices, vegetables, milk, and canned goods, stock our shelves, assemble different packages of food, and then help us distribute the food to the community members that come to our doors for such assistance. There is usually a flurry of activity in our waiting area during this time. We usually have very little left over. This would be a fun experience for your group, and an excellent way to witness how our organization has a direct impact on our community by providing a basic need. This project is recommended for 3-5 people. *Youth Educational Development Program Aide: Spring 2009 This opportunity is offered M-TH afternoons here at Canal Alliance. We have 3 Middle School classes and 2 classes for High School. We also have college students who might need one on one help arranged on a case by case basis. All of these would be great opportunities for college students who are currently studying education, or currently retired professionals from the educational field. We do also invite high school students, preferably ages 16 and over, to work with our middle school program. Volunteers should work well under limited supervision with both students and staff. Volunteers not only help our students with homework, but also with Canal Alliance sponsored projects. Additional responsibilities include preparing snacks and refreshments, supervising groups during outdoor and indoor activities, helping with clean-up. Volunteers should be available at least one full shift per week beginning January 12 through May 29, 2009. While being familiar with Spanish is helpful, it is not required. Volunteers ages 18+ will be required to undergo a background check which includes fingerprinting. MARIN SUMMER THEATER OPEN FOR AUDITIONS
Sweeney Todd is coming to Novato this summer! Marin Summer Theater (MST), an evening program for students of performing arts, will present Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece as part of its three-show season in July and August, along with The Beaux' Stratagem, a Restoration comedy, and Bernstein on Broadway, a music and dance review. The program will run June 15-Aug. 2.
MST is open to students throughout the North Bay: those entering eighth grade, high school students, and college undergraduates under age 23. Students from all over Marin and Sonoma counties are encouraged to participate. Auditions for actors, musicians, and dancers will be held by appointment Mar. 21 at San Marin High School in Novato, pre-registration is required. (Those who are unable to attend auditions in person may submit a DVD recording.) Technicians and designers also may submit applications; they will be interviewed by phone. Acceptance is subject to audition and payment of tuition. Fee for the entire season is $275 for participation in one, two, or three shows.
According to artistic director Patrick Nims, several factors make MST unique. "First and foremost, MST is a challenging program for young performers and theater technicians interested in developing their talents through the production of great theater. Working on as many as three different productions in a seven-week period is intense. Second, the inclusion of kids from different schools and educational levels raises the quality of performance and expands participants' horizons. Third, since we are sponsored by non-profit San Marin High School Music Boosters we can focus on serving our students at the lowest possible cost, keeping tuition low because of our volunteer network and the assistance we receive from San Marin High School and the Novato Unified School District."
To help interested applicants prepare for auditions MST is offering a free workshop on Saturday, Mar. 14 (1-3 pm) at San Marin High School. Students will learn more about the scheduled shows and the audition process, with attention to each person's performance material. Nims says, "There is no requirement that prospective participants attend the workshop, but it's a good opportunity to meet the staff and prepare a great audition." Details about the program, audition scheduling, and application forms can be found on the MST web site at www.marinsummertheater.org |
BIKE to RAISE FUND for SAN MARIN HIGH

Saturday, May 16, 2009 - Raise Funds for San Marin High
The Pan-Napa Challenge is a one-day bicycling event held annually to raise money for Novato schools.
The second annual Pan-Napa Challenge will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2009, in beautiful Napa valley.
Last year eighteen dads got together for a fun day of riding in Napa Valley and raised $28,000 for Hamilton Elementary School. This year we're expanding the challenge to include riders from all 16 Novato schools. Now it's your turn to raise money for your local Novato school. The ride is open to parents, teachers, students, and anyone else who wants to help out.
How The Challenge Works
Riders sign up to ride one of several routes. We'll have beautiful and fun routes of 10, 25, and 50 miles (or more!). The pace is as leisurely or aggressive as you make it. Last year half the riders rode 25 miles, and the other half rode 50.
Donations are collected through the sponsorship of riders. Visit the website to sponsor a rider from your school. Riders allocate their donations to the schools of their choice. All donations are tax deductible. Net proceeds from the event go to the Novato schools as allocated by the riders - YOU have a choice on which school to sponsor!
Volunteers: On the day of the event we all get together for a big party in Napa. While your riders are out cranking those pedals there will be food, games, socializing, and plenty of fun for the kids.
Visit the website to sign up, donate, or volunteer:

"A CENTURY OF GENTLE SEASONS, A HISTORY OF NOVATO" DVD SALES TO BENEFIT SCHOOL FUEL
Zan Media has recently released a one-hour DVD about Novato called "A Century of Gentle Seasons, A History of Novato." Owners Don and Chris Scioli (local San Marin residents) produced this one hour video as a "small tribute to a great city."
The business is named after the first initials of their three children, Zack, Alex and Niki -- who all attended Novato's public schools from kindergarten through high school. It's a fun, fast paced and entertaining peek into what makes Novato so unique, community centric and slightly eccentric. There's a lively section on our schools in the past and present, hosted by longtime resident and Novato educator Louise Koenig, and even a section that recalls the antics of Principal Lu Sutton, who always wore black dresses and could beat all the young boys at marbles! You might even see yourself walking the streets during one of the annual Novato events showcased in this video.
The DVD costs $20.00 of which $5.00 will be donated to School Fuel. Visit http://www.novatohistory.com OR call 897-8393 to learn more about the video or to order a copy. |
