 SAN MARIN DRAMA BRINGS HOME GOLD from the LENAEA STATE DRAMA COMPETITION
San Marin Drama Brings Home the Gold from the Lenaea State Drama Competition at Sacramento State Jan30-Feb 1, 2009
San Marin Drama took their winter play, Charlie Cox Runs With Scissors to the Lenaea State Drama Competition at Sac State (Jan 30, 31 and Feb 1) and brought home a gold medal for their outstanding performance.
The cast included: Ryan Rohtla, Chelsea Cymrot, Alisha Hodges, Rose Oser and Cody Meyers.
* Alisha Hodges won best actress for her role as Wally Death in the play.
* Hayley Stoddard and Christopher Zander won the Gold Medal for their scene from Bad Habits by Terrence McNally and did a Command performance of their scene in front of 1800 students.
* Kyla Ainsworth and Jessica Ibsen won a bronze medal for their scene from Odd Couple (female version).
Students worked very hard over the last several months and these honors are well deserved. San Marin Drama will take Charlie Cox Runs with Scissors on the road again this summer when they perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August of 2009.
The Lenaea State Drama Competition is in its 53rd year. Here are some details about the 2009 Lenaea Festival:

 MARIN SUMMER THEATER OPEN FOR AUDITIONS
Sweeney Todd is coming to Novato this summer! Marin Summer Theater (MST), an evening program for students of performing arts, will present Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece as part of its three-show season in July and August, along with The Beaux' Stratagem, a Restoration comedy, and Bernstein on Broadway, a music and dance review. The program will run June 15-Aug. 2.  MST is open to students throughout the North Bay: those entering eighth grade, high school students, and college undergraduates under age 23. Students from all over Marin and Sonoma counties are encouraged to participate. Auditions for actors, musicians, and dancers will be held by appointment Mar. 21 at San Marin High School in Novato, pre-registration is required. (Those who are unable to attend auditions in person may submit a DVD recording.) Technicians and designers also may submit applications; they will be interviewed by phone. Acceptance is subject to audition and payment of tuition. Fee for the entire season is $275 for participation in one, two, or three shows.  According to artistic director Patrick Nims, several factors make MST unique. "First and foremost, MST is a challenging program for young performers and theater technicians interested in developing their talents through the production of great theater. Working on as many as three different productions in a seven-week period is intense. Second, the inclusion of kids from different schools and educational levels raises the quality of performance and expands participants' horizons. Third, since we are sponsored by non-profit San Marin High School Music Boosters we can focus on serving our students at the lowest possible cost, keeping tuition low because of our volunteer network and the assistance we receive from San Marin High School and the Novato Unified School District."  To help interested applicants prepare for auditions MST is offering a free workshop on Saturday, Mar. 14 (1-3 pm) at San Marin High School. Students will learn more about the scheduled shows and the audition process, with attention to each person's performance material. Nims says, "There is no requirement that prospective participants attend the workshop, but it's a good opportunity to meet the staff and prepare a great audition."

 UNIQUE ART FOR SALE
The San Marin High Art Boosters had a sale of unique art at the Jazz 'n Java Concert on February 6th.
There's been a special request to have some of the art for sale in the front office.
If you missed the concert and would like to still purchase some of these items made by the students, there are comic books and magnetic bookmarks which are watercolor strips in shades of red or green. The magnets are on each side of the bookmark allowing it to hold onto the page that it's placed on. In addition, there is a variety of other items still for sale - photos of original art made by the students into notecards, etched glass flower vases and spoon rests made out of slumped glass bottles (melted glass bottles in a kiln at over 1,500 degrees).

 ART SHOW AT WELLS FARGO BANK
The San Marin High Student Art Show and Reception was held on January 31, 2009, at Wells Fargo Bank on Grant Avenue in Novato. It was well attended by students, parents and customers of Wells Fargo.
Due to the success of the show, Wells Fargo Bank has invited the students to keep the art on display through February 23rd.
If you haven't had a chance to stop by, feel free to wander in and take a look all around the Bank at the variety of 2-D and 3-D art done by San Marin's talented students. The Bank is also open on Saturdays, which makes it even more convenient for you to stop by.

Another amazing night watching our multi-talented student perform.
(San Marin Music students enjoy an unique opportunity of being able to participate, sample and develop expertise in numerous music programs/activities. One of the opportunity is 'Jazz' and 'JAVA' where music students had the opportunity to perform in many groups.)
San Marin Music presented 'Jazz & Java' on Friday, February 6, at 7:30 p.m., in the Emily Gates Student Center. This performance featured San Marin's jazz vocal and instrumental groups, as well as Hill Middle School's jazz band and Dixieland group. As an added feature, San Marin's Art Department also offered artwork for sale created by San Marin art students!!

Dedication to Special Education (DSE), is an all volunteer group of parents of children with special needs. DSE raises money to support special ed throughout Marin County. ALL proceeds go to the grants to special educators program, where resources are placed directly into classrooms throughout Marin, as well as to supporting the Technology Resource Center, which was created in 2001 and relies on our fundraising efforts.

 BIKE to RAISE FUND for SAN MARIN HIGH
Saturday, May 16, 2009 - Raise Funds for San Marin High
The Pan-Napa Challenge is a one-day bicycling event held annually to raise money for Novato schools.
The second annual Pan-Napa Challenge will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2009, in beautiful Napa valley.
 Last year eighteen dads got together for a fun day of riding in Napa Valley and raised $28,000 for Hamilton Elementary School. This year we're expanding the challenge to include riders from all 16 Novato schools. Now it's your turn to raise money for your local Novato school. The ride is open to parents, teachers, students, and anyone else who wants to help out.
How The Challenge Works
Riders sign up to ride one of several routes. We'll have beautiful and fun routes of 10, 25, and 50 miles (or more!). The pace is as leisurely or aggressive as you make it. Last year half the riders rode 25 miles, and the other half rode 50.
Donations are collected through the sponsorship of riders. Visit the website to sponsor a rider from your school. Riders allocate their donations to the schools of their choice. All donations are tax deductible. Net proceeds from the event go to the Novato schools as allocated by the riders - YOU have a choice on which school to sponsor!
Volunteers: On the day of the event we all get together for a big party in Napa. While your riders are out cranking those pedals there will be food, games, socializing, and plenty of fun for the kids.

The annual Senior Fashion Show and dinner is held every year in March and is one of the school's largest fundraising events.
The senior class has been able to raise over $10,000 each year for the past four years to go towards their senior ball. We cannot do this without parent support, donations, and involvement.

All persons interested in law enforcement and related career opportunities. To learn more about the field of law enforcement including job dimensions and Basic Academy training requirements. Included in the Career day is Academy Orientation covering job dimensions and entrance requirements. Law Enforcement Orientation including general information from law enforcement representatives and communications dispatchers. POST testing for reading and writing skills for both agency requirements and Academy entrance will be performed during the day.
Representatives from North Bay Area Law Enforcement Agencies will be available to answer questions and engage in recruiting during the day's activities.
Demonstrations of law enforcement equipment will be conducted by agency representatives. Academy staff will also make training simulators available to participants. Wear loose clothing, preferably sweat pants and shirt or a jogging suit. Running shoes of sufficient quality are recommended for the physical training portion of the day's activities. Students shadow local professionals for the morning and join the many other student shadows and their hosts for a luncheon/debrief of their experiences.

Marin Search and Rescue
When someone goes missing, we're there to find and rescue them. Are you interested in joining Marin Search and Rescue? Marin Search and Rescue is a division of the Marin County Sheriff's Department that searches for missing persons all over California, assists in evidence searches, performs rope rescues, and assists during natural disasters.

Canal Alliance Volunteer Opportunities
*Supply Healthy Snacks to our Students
Your group is invited to prepare healthy snacks (such as sandwiches, fruit, or cheese and crackers, and a healthy drink) for approximately 75 teens enrolled in our Youth Educational Development Program (YEDP). This project is offered from on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 2-4:30.
First, we invite you to come to Canal Alliance for a tour of our organization. Then, we thought it fun for YEDP staff to accompany you to a local market to obtain the items. We would greatly appreciate it if you could purchase
these items on our behalf. Generally a $75 donation would cover the cost of the snacks. We are happy to complete a donation receipt for your generosity. Afterwards we will return to Canal Alliance, prepare the snacks, and then distribute them to the students. Not only will you be providing a nutritious snack, you will be helping to reinforce our goal of fostering a wholesome and healthy environment for our teens. This is a wonderful opportunity for groups including student organizations and clubs, families and employee
teams. This project is perfect for 5-7 people.
*Food Bank Distribution
Every Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 10:00-12:30, we open our on site food bank to our community. After we return from the Marin Community Food Bank, you will help upload the van, sort the items -usually consisting of breads, grains, fruits, juices, vegetables, milk, and canned goods, stock our shelves, assemble different packages of food, and then help us distribute the food to the community members that come to our doors for such assistance. There is usually a flurry of activity in our waiting area during this time. We usually have very little left over. This would be a fun experience for your group, and an excellent way to witness how our organization has a direct impact on our community by providing a basic need. This project is recommended for 3-5 people.
*Youth Educational Development Program Aide: Spring 2009
This opportunity is offered M-TH afternoons here at Canal Alliance. We have 3 Middle School classes and 2 classes for High School. We also have college students who might need one on one help arranged on a case by case basis.
All of these would be great opportunities for college students who are currently studying education, or currently retired professionals from the educational field. We do also invite high school students, preferably ages 16 and over, to work with our middle school program. Volunteers should work well under limited supervision with both students and staff. Volunteers not only help our students with homework, but also with Canal Alliance sponsored projects. Additional responsibilities include preparing snacks and refreshments, supervising groups during outdoor and indoor activities, helping with clean-up. Volunteers should be available at least one full shift per week beginning January 12 through May 29, 2009. While being familiar with Spanish is helpful, it is not required. Volunteers ages 18+ will be required to undergo a background check which includes fingerprinting. Volunteers that are willing to transport students for field trips are required to provide a copy of his or her DL and insurance. Driving is not a required responsibility. Patience and flexibility are musts.

This is spring cleaning time for our beautiful town. Volunteer groups, families, clubs, neighborhoods, business and individuals from all around Novato will pick up litter from city street, median strips, cree banks, parks and bike paths. "Adopt-and -Island"

 LAWS OF LIFE ESSAY CONTEST
The Rotary Club of Novato Sunrise is very pleased to announce its 4th annual Laws of Life Essay Contest. The Novato Unified School District Superintendent has approved the contest for all students in the district's middle schools and high schools. Principals and teachers in these schools have received their Laws of Life materials and students will soon begin preparing their essays.
The Laws of Life Essay Contest invites students to write about values that are important to them. The contest asks that they write about any Law of Life that they learned from an adult or family member whom they know or knew. The person might be a parent, grand parent, aunt, uncle, teacher, coach, mentor, neighbor or other adult who made a positive impression on the student and their life.
Over the past three years, more than 1,600 Laws of Life essays have been written by students as a part of the contest. Our Rotary Club has found that the contest:
- Helps brings students, schools and the community together in support of and in celebration of the experiences of young people,
- Inspires students to write about their personal experiences and viewpoints,
- Reinforces and rewards literacy, and
- Provides teachers with another tool supportive of their curriculum.
Contest essays and entry forms must be submitted by February 13, 2009. The best essays will be submitted to an honor panel of judges chosen from the Novato community. The panel of Honor Judges will select the contest winners.
Contest winners will be awarded cash prizes of $300, $200, and $100 for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each of the Middle School and High School groups. $50 cash prizes will be awarded to those receiving Honorable Mention. The teachers of the 1st place winners will each be recognized with a $100 award.
The Laws of Life Contest awards ceremony is scheduled for April 9, 2009 and will be held at the Hill Middle School auditorium.

Our class will span 7 hours each day for 4 days

 Novato Riptide's "Splash Day"
WHAT:
Make a splash and swim with the Novato Riptide Swim Team as we begin our 22nd year of competitive swimming in the Marin Swim League! Swimmers of all levels, ages 5-18 are welcome. Come to register for the team and meet with the RiptideCoaches and fellow swimmers. Each new swimmer will have an opportunity to be skill-tested. Each swimmer must be able to swim 25 yards (one pool length) of unassisted freestyle or back stroke. Younger swimmers joining the Junior Riptide program must be able to swim 10-15 yards of unassisted freestyle or backstroke and should be comfortable in deep water.
Riptide Swim Team is a member of the Marin Swim League (MSL). The MSL is a summer league dedicated to providing and preserving quality amateur competitive swimming events for its subscribing membership. The MSL fosters and promotes the ideals of good sportsmanship, fair play and good fellowship for participants of all ages and abilities in an environment that nurtures self-esteem in all the children it serves.
