As Charlie begins to fall in love with Nell, Kiki, an incorrigible cupid and the personification of Love, enters the picture. No one can see Wally (Death) or Kiki (Love) except Charlie. As Charlie and Nell's relationship begins to blossom, Love and Death begin their epic tug- of- war to see who will win control of Charlie. Will Charlie give in to his inevitable death or listen to love who is beckoning him to live life to fullest each day? San Marin Drama to perform this play at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2009
San Main Drama will perform this show in late January 2009 at the Lenaea Drama Festival at Sacramento State University and again as part of the US Team at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival August of 2009.
San Marin Drama was one of 90 schools chosen out of 1600 schools from around the United States to be part of the US Team at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland in August of 2009. The Fringe Festival is the largest drama festival in the world and is considered" The Olympics of Theatre." San Marin Drama hopes to spread awareness about (ALS) Lou Gehrig's disease on a world platform. This play will be a fundraiser for the six students performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Each night you will see:
~ Men in Kilts
~ Music by San Marin Students
~ A live Auction
~ Monologues and scenes from other talented San Marin Advanced Drama actors (in addition to the play)
~ Great food Dedication: The Play will be dedicated to Lloyd Cymrot (who suffers from ALS). His two daughters, Chelsea and Cortnay are part of the San Marin Advanced Drama Class. Chelsea is the assistant student director for the play and also plays the role of Kiki. Lloyd is truly an inspiration to all of us. He has been fighting ALS for 10 years. With great perseverance, he has never missed one of his daughter's plays. Although completely disabled from the disease, he comes in his movable bed with his nurse to watch their performances. San Marin is proud to be doing this play in his honor. |

SAN MARIN MUSIC MADRIGAL FEAST BEHIND THE SCENE THANK YOUs
- By Mrs. Fischer
Thank You to the many people behind the scenes at this year's Madrigal Feast. So many guests thank us and remark, "This was awesome, how do you do it?" Well... Kathy Simmons and John Carr begin in October - checking inventory and making lists and buying non-perishables when they see them at good prices. Also in October, Leigh Blair creates the reservation form and Nancy Zanardi orders the tables for the student center. As reservations come in spreadsheets are begun and tickets are hand written by Susan Fischer - whose phone & email become command central as she co-ordinates the entire behind the scenes action! Sylvia Barry creates place cards and continues making them through the weekend! The weekend before opening, Keith Cavallero begins to build the castle in the student center - Keith takes time off of his job as a firefighter to complete this task. Michael Warner also helped Keith this year.
The Madrigal play (written & directed this year by Marty Garcia-Cotter & Pat Nims) is cast in November and rehearsals begin. Edie Ainsworth & Jackie Garcia-Cotter held a costuming workshop that was open to all - and they were sewing and sewing. Laura Bertolli, Sandy Peterson & Waiyan MacMillan volunteered their time to sew for other people's children! Edie & Shannon Ainsworth made muffin hats to sell. Marina Nims worked on costumes for the play & Elizabeth Rohtla gathered props. Tuesday morning of Madrigal week, Joe Taggard, Barry Richter, John Collins, Brent Ainsworth and Mrs. Gates head to Petaluma to cut trees. That evening Randy Semorile, Marty Garcia-Cotter, Jack & June Haugen, Ginger Apperson, Danelle Block and Mrs. Gates "hang" the trees and the banners. Friday morning Susan Hart roasts a Boar's head in her oven. John and Kathy take Madrigal Friday off of their real jobs - and they are out shopping bright and early - in stores from San Rafael to Rohnert Park! Teresa Vance, June Haugen & Gretchen Tara drop off holly, ivy and greens in the student center. Waiyan MacMillan decorates the boar's head! The tables and chairs are up and the students set the places - many students are learning for the first time how to set a table! Around 1PM Kathy and John begin to set up the Madrigal Kitchen in the classroom next to the Drama room. And the fun really begins!! John shops daily - for fresh rolls and chicken breasts - Kathy and Ginger Apperson were at San Marin all weekend beginning at 2PM each day and staying until 10PM. Marian Caldwell joined them "in training" for parts of Friday and Saturday.
The Shoppers - John, Rhonda & Kathy The Catering Captains - Kathy, John, Ginger & apprentice Marian Susan Fischer's Apprentice all three nights - Kate Kenyon The Cook's Helpers-Martha Paulos, A. J. Rothchild, Cynthia Oczkus, Janis West, Jackie Garcia-Cotter, Carmen Bower, Dawn Stranne, Patrick McNally, Ellen Richter The Movers & Scrubbers - Kim Oga, Evelyn Davoren, Cindy & Peter Overfield, Brenda Hagberg, June Haugen, Edie Ainsworth The Student Center Servers - June Haugen, Diane Elsmore, Edie Ainsworth, Sylvia Barry, Dawn Stranne, Mark & Diane Combs, Gay White, Danelle Block, Jackie Garcia-Cotter, Susan Hart, Brenda Pfeifer The Steamed Pudding makers - Valerie Zander, Ellen Richter, Barbara McNally, Cindy Klinkman, Martha Paulos, Edie Ainsworth, Jackie Garcia-Cotter, Dawn Stranne, Cindy Overfield, Linda Biancaniello, Cindy Cumberland, Susan Hart, Danelle Block, Waiyan MacMillan, Lynn Nichelini, Emily Gates The Vegetarian Casserole makers - Leo Eide, Sherri Gradl, Laura Dove, Leigh Blair The Trash Guy w/ truck - Clayton Collins, Joe Taggard, Mike Warner
And all the other parents who pitched in when we weren't looking!! And of course our two amazing Music Teachers- Ms. M and Ms. G Huzzah!! Huzzah!!
* Note from Sylvia - Come back for more pictures - Please send picturses of the Madrigal Feast (event or prep/rehersal) you might have to Sylvia Barry eNews@SanMarinHigh.org - I will create a video for 2008 Madrigal Feast |

AERIES GRADING SYSTEM REMINDER
Please note that teachers(*) update their electronic grade book weekly, therefore when you view your student's grade, it may not yet reflect work that your child has most recently turned in.
If you are concerned about your student's grade in a class where it appears the grade book is not being updated regularly, then it is appropriate to follow up with the teacher.
(*) Note: Not all teachers are using the grade book now; but will be after the start of the second semester. |
LAWS OF LIFE ESSAY CONTEST
P.O. Box 356 Novato, CA, 94949
November 4, 2008
The Rotary Club of Novato Sunrise is very pleased to announce its 4th annual Laws of Life Essay Contest. The Novato Unified School District Superintendent has approved the contest for all students in the district's middle schools and high schools. Principals and teachers in these schools have received their Laws of Life materials and students will soon begin preparing their essays.
The Laws of Life Essay Contest invites students to write about values that are important to them. The contest asks that they write about any Law of Life that they learned from an adult or family member whom they know or knew. The person might be a parent, grand parent, aunt, uncle, teacher, coach, mentor, neighbor or other adult who made a positive impression on the student and their life.
Over the past three years, more than 1,600 Laws of Life essays have been written by students as a part of the contest. Our Rotary Club has found that the contest:
- Helps brings students, schools and the community together in support of and in celebration of the experiences of young people,
- Inspires students to write about their personal experiences and viewpoints,
- Reinforces and rewards literacy, and
- Provides teachers with another tool supportive of their curriculum.
Contest essays and entry forms must be submitted by February 13, 2009. The best essays will be submitted to an honor panel of judges chosen from the Novato community. The panel of Honor Judges will select the contest winners.
Contest winners will be awarded cash prizes of $300, $200, and $100 for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each of the Middle School and High School groups. $50 cash prizes will be awarded to those receiving Honorable Mention. The teachers of the 1st place winners will each be recognized with a $100 award.
The Laws of Life Contest awards ceremony is scheduled for April 9, 2009 and will be held at the Hill Middle School auditorium.

A WORD FROM THE COUNSELING OFFICE
SENIORS Senior Meetings - The counselors and Mrs. Cunnie have met with seniors in small groups in the College and Career Center during the week of October 13th. We reviewed important information that all senior should know regarding high school graduation, transcripts requests, SAT and ACT score reporting, NCAA eligibility, college application process, College and Career Center services, ROP Programs, and Financial Aid. Please log into Prep HQ from the San Marin website and go to "Shared Files" to download the Senior Meeting PowerPoint presentation. Letters of Recommendation - Seniors who need a letter of recommendation from their counselor for college and/or scholarships need to make an appointment with their counselor to complete a Counselor Recommendation Packet. Please give your counselor at least 20 days prior to the first deadline. JUNIORS Now is a great time to start exploring post-high school options. Encourage your child to begin researching colleges, technical schools, and trade schools. There are many resources in the College and Career Center to help you get started. Communication between parents and students is so important in deciding which alternative to pursue. If your student is considering college, what criteria has he/she set in terms of a major, location, cost, and size? What type of employment would your child like to gain after high school and how can he/she prepare now? Students and parents are encouraged to contact the Counseling Office or College and Career Center to find information about each option and the necessary steps to pursue each. Assist - ASSIST is an online student-transfer information system that shows how course credits earned at one public California college or university can be applied when transferred to another. ASSIST is the official repository of articulation for California's public colleges and universities and provides the most accurate and up-to-date information about student transfer in California. Check it out at http://www.assist.org/web-assist/welcome.html
