PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dr. Robert Vieth

GirlsLaxWinner2008PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear Parents and Students,

I would like to take this opportunity to update San Marin's efforts at "Going Green."

As one of the co-chairs of the Novato Unified School District's Sustainability Committee, San Marin is well represented; also on the committee are Marie Chan, a parent at San Marin and active in helping the school become a more environmentally friendly organization; and Annan Paterson, one of the school's counselors is also very active in Sustainable Novato and helping San Marin become a model for Sustainability.

The first major spotlight of the District's Sustainability Committee is on recycling. The
committee is focusing on making sure every school in the district is meeting a minimum level of recycling. This effort will require a clear focus on recycling so everyone who interacts with a school is also supporting the effort. The focus at the high school level is trying to keep the campus as clean as possible through appropriate recycling of bottles, cans, and paper products when students are at break, lunch, or on campus after school. San Marin will be launching the outdoor portion of our recycling plan when we return from winter break. The campus will have
new recycling bins outside, and it will be important for students and staff and the community to properly use these bins. The campus is already recycling paper from the classrooms.

When the bins arrive, the Leadership Class and the Environmental Club will engage the entire school in a campaign to appropriately recycle. I am also asking parents and community members to use these recycling bins correctly. One of the largest sources of recyclable material are weekend community events like Pop Warner Football or other community sports events.  On Monday morning, we often have a large amount of trash that could be recycled.

Recycling is no longer just a good thing to do for our environment. For the first time in years, the Novato Disposal Company is going to start charging the school district for disposal services. Without any recycling, the disposal bill will be in the range of $150,000 to 200,000 for the district. We believe that if everyone recycles, the disposal costs can be less than $100,000. Everyone knows the difficult financial times we all face, including the school district, so it is important that the general fund of the school district pays as little as possible for disposal services.

With everyone doing their part, San Marin can have a model recycling program that
we can be proud of, so please support this important recycling effort. The recycling plan for the district will require parent and community groups to fully participate in the plan. Yes we can!

Regards,
Robert C. Vieth, Ph.D., Principal

I want to wish the entire San Marin High School community a happy and safe holiday season.  We've had another successful semester at San Marin High School. It's been a privilege and pleasure interacting and supporting your children.

Final exams are being administered the week of December 15th-19th. It's very important students prepare and study for finals. Please stay involved and monitor your child's grade and progress prior to final exams. Final exams usually have a significant impact on a student's final grade.

League play for winter sports begins during winter break. Saturday night January 3, our varsity basketball teams play at Novato High School. It's always fun night when we play our cross town rival. Check the Marin IJ or Novato Advance for sports schedules during winter break.

The California High School Exit Exam will be administered to all 10th grade students on February 3rd & 4th during the school day.  Students must pass both sections of the exam, English/language arts & math, to earn a high school diploma. Information letters will be sent home right before winter break. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about the exam.

SENIOR FASHION SHOW

The annual Senior Fashion Show and dinner is held every year in March and is one of the school's largest fundraising events. The senior class has been able to raise over $10,000 each year for the past four years to go towards their senior ball. We cannot do this without parent support, donations, and involvement. So please, if you would like to be a part of this magnificent event or have an item you would be willing to donate for the silent auction, live auction or raffle please contact Ryan Fedoroff at rfedoroff@nusd.org. We appreciate all your support!

MUSTANGS IN TRAINING

On December 10th, the leadership class will be holding a luncheon for 9th graders and their MIT leaders. This will be an opportunity for leaders to check in with their MIT groups to see how their year is progressing and give 9th graders an opportunity to fill out a survey about their experience thus far. More information will be provided to students on this upcoming event through their English classes.

Other Drama News

Figments was a huge success with both students and adults. Thanks to those of you who came to see the performances. Ms K is very proud of her talented actors and tech team.

On Monday, December 1, Advanced Drama hosted special guests Marin County Youth Commissioner, Michael Grogin and Marin County District Attorney Berberian. Dr. Jan Derby highly recommended San Marin Drama to help with a program focused on
Marin teens.

Michael Grogin produced a 20- minute play he wrote about the perils of on-line dating. There was a staged reading Monday, Dec 1. Later in the spring the group chosen to be in the play will be video taped with the tape being shown to high schools throughout the county.

Advanced Drama students are busy preparing our one-act play, Charlie Cox Runs With Scissors, along with other monologues and scenes for the statewide Lenaea drama competition at Sacramento State in late January.
This year we are adding a four-day Cafe Theatre to highlight the play and monologues and scenes on January 22, 23, 24 at 7:30 and January 25 at 2:00 pm. This profound play about Lou Gehrigs Disease Is the play San Marin Drama will perform on a world stage at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Our fundraising efforts continue to send six drama students, Ms K and one chaperone to Edinburgh this summer. We are about half way there, and area working hard to raise the remaining funds.

To help in those efforts, we are planning a fabulous gala scheduled for February 7. Adults can dance to the great music of "The Rockin' Role Models" featuring Tim Long, Father Phil Rountree, & Scott MacLeod. Several people will be wearing kilts. Don't
miss this great event at Rountree Hall, St. Francis Church on February 7. Look for more information as the date gets nearer.

PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association)
Girls Softball 2007 Champion

The PTSA directories were delivered to your students the week of 11/17. Thank you to Teresa Vance and Sue McQuinn for their hard
work!

In February, "Valenthings" is an annual tradition at San Marin. Through your generous support, the PTSA purchases much need supplies for our teachers. The library is turned into a small
office supply store and the teachers "shop" for items they usually pay
for out of pocket.  This is one of the teachers' favorite days of the
year! Donations are welcome and can be made through Pay Pal on
the San Marin website, or sent to San Marin Attn: PTSA. Please note
"Valenthings" on the memo line.

Is your student looking for a way to express their talents? Encourage
them to participate in the PTA Reflections Program. English, art, and
photography teachers have information and rules about the program.
Work needs to be turned in immediately after winter break.
Any questions, or if you would like to help with this event, please call
Norma Dawson 897-8521.
The next PTSA meeting is January 14th, 7:00PM in the library. Hope
to see you there! Have a very happy Holiday Season!!

LAWS OF LIFE ESSAY CONTEST

P.O. Box 356 Novato, CA, 94949
November 4, 2008

The Rotary Club of Novato Sunrise is very pleased to announce its 4th annual Laws of Life Essay Contest.   The Novato Unified School District Superintendent has approved the contest for all students in the district's middle schools and high schools.  Principals and teachers in these schools have received their Laws of Life materials and students will soon begin preparing their essays.

The Laws of Life Essay Contest invites students to write about values that are important to them.  The contest asks that they write about any Law of Life that they learned from an adult or family member whom they know or knew.  The person might be a parent, grand parent, aunt, uncle, teacher, coach, mentor, neighbor or other adult who made a positive impression on the student and their life.

Over the past three years, more than 1,600 Laws of Life essays have been written by students as a part of the contest.  Our Rotary Club has found that the contest:

  • Helps brings students, schools and the community together in support of and in celebration of the experiences of young people,
  • Inspires students to write about their personal experiences and viewpoints,
  • Reinforces and rewards literacy, and
  • Provides teachers with another tool supportive of their curriculum.

Contest essays and entry forms must be submitted by February 13, 2009.  The best essays will be submitted to an honor panel of judges chosen from the Novato community. The panel of Honor Judges will select the contest winners.

Contest winners will be awarded cash prizes of $300, $200, and $100 for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each of the Middle School and High School groups.  $50 cash prizes will be awarded to those receiving Honorable Mention.  The teachers of the 1st place winners will each be recognized with a $100 award.

The Laws of Life Contest awards ceremony is scheduled for April 9, 2009 and will be held at the Hill Middle School auditorium.

KnittingSCARVES FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

With the weather turning cool and the holidays approaching, you may be thinking of keeping warm and gift buying!!  What better way to do both than to purchase a scarf from Carol England and the Scarves for Scholarships Fund. Last school year, $1000 was raised from scarf sales. This money went to 4 deserving seniors to assist with their college expenses. Thanks to those who purchased scarves last year.

This year the game is $2000 from scarf sales. To this end, a number of folks are knitting scarves for the cause. See Carol England in rm. 603 to make your selection or place an order. Custom orders taken. Carol is reachable at cengland@nusd.org.
Counseling Office Staff A WORD FROM THE COUNSELING OFFICE

SENIORS
Senior Meetings - The counselors and Mrs. Cunnie have met with seniors in small groups in the College and Career Center during the week of October 13th.  We reviewed important information that all senior should know regarding high school graduation, transcripts requests, SAT and ACT score reporting, NCAA eligibility, college application process, College and Career Center services, ROP Programs, and Financial Aid.  Please log into Prep HQ from the San Marin website and go to "Shared Files" to download the Senior Meeting PowerPoint presentation.

Letters of Recommendation - Seniors who need a letter of recommendation from their counselor for college and/or scholarships need to make an appointment with their counselor to complete a Counselor Recommendation Packet.  Please give your counselor at least 20 days prior to the first deadline.

JUNIORS
Now is a great time to start exploring post-high school options.  Encourage your child to begin researching colleges, technical schools, and trade schools.  There are many resources in the College and Career Center to help you get started.  Communication between parents and students is so important in deciding which alternative to pursue.  If your student is considering college, what criteria has he/she set in terms of a major, location, cost, and size?  What type of employment would your child like to gain after high school and how can he/she prepare now?  Students and parents are encouraged to contact the Counseling Office or College and Career Center to find information about each option and the necessary steps to pursue each.

Assist - ASSIST is an online student-transfer information system that shows how course credits earned at one public California college or university can be applied when transferred to another. ASSIST is the official repository of articulation for California's public colleges and universities and provides the most accurate and up-to-date information about student transfer in California.  Check it out at http://www.assist.org/web-assist/welcome.html

SOPHOMORES
PLAN Test - San Marin is pleased to offer the PLAN test to all sophomores on Saturday, November 15th.  The PLAN is a practice test to the ACT test and gives students a forecast of how they might do on the ACT test.  The ACT is taken in the junior and senior year and is used for college admission and placement.  In addition to gauging academic achievement, PLAN provides extensive information for educational and career planning.
