Madrigal Feast at San Marin - December 5, 6, 7
At San Marin High School, where home economics is no longer a part of the curriculum, music students recently had the opportunity to attend a workshop to make their costumes for The Madrigal Feast which will be held Dec. 5, 6 & 7.
Students learned to cut patterns, iron their fabric and use a sewing machine - with the help of several music parents. Some students made their entire costume on the day of the workshop! The Madrigal Fea st is an evening of feasting and medieval entertainment and takes place in the Emily Gates Student Center, which will be transformed to resemble an old English castle. Students - dressed in period costume and using the dialect of the period - serve a meal, entertain the guests and perform an original play. The night ends with a choral concert. Reservations for the evening must be made by Wednesday, December 3.
San Marin music students have reservation forms or you may also pick one up in the school office. Reservations are accepted by mail only. The $25 ticket includes Wassail, chicken or vegetarian dinner, and flaming pudding - along with two hours of non-stop entertainment!

AP Chemistry Field Trip
To the Advanced Light Source at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
By Dr. Michelle Lafevre-Bernt
On October 22, twenty six students from the AP Chemistry course visited the Advanced Light Source, or ALS, at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) as part of a unit of study of atomic structure and electron configuration of atoms.
The ALS is a third generation synchrotron that accelerates electrons to the speed of light (3.00 X 108 meters/second). The electrons are then used at over forty work stations to study electron structure and behavior in atoms. Applications for this research included determining the three-dimensional structure of molecules like proteins, in order to design more specific therapeutics for human diseases like cancer, increasing the efficiency and capacity of electronic storage devices like computer chips, and developing novel ways to treat and dispose of waste products that are harmful to the environment.
The students and two parent chaperones received a tour of the ALS and had the opportunity to hear from several scientists that talked about their research and its applications. Following the tour, the students received ALS-issued periodic tables and pencils, and had lunch in the campus cafeteria high in the Berkeley hills.
The students were asked to reflect on their experience there. Questions they had to consider included the nature of the research done at the ALS, the applications and limitations of the research, political, social and economic influences guiding funding and pursuit of the research, and if the students could picture themselves working in that type of environment in their future. Despite being a little overwhelmed by the caliber of knowledge and research going on there and all the information they received, all the students (and the parents and the teacher!) had an interesting and fun experience.
Thanks to Jennifer Ayala and Jim McQuade, who helped keep track of the students and keep us (somewhat) on schedule!

LAWS OF LIFE ESSAY CONTEST
Rotary Club of Novato Sunrise P.O. Box 356 Novato, CA, 94949
November 4, 2008
The Rotary Club of Novato Sunrise is very pleased to announce its 4th annual Laws of Life Essay Contest. The Novato Unified School District Superintendent has approved the contest for all students in the district's middle schools and high schools. Principals and teachers in these schools have received their Laws of Life materials and students will soon begin preparing their essays.
The Laws of Life Essay Contest invites students to write about values that are important to them. The contest asks that they write about any Law of Life that they learned from an adult or family member whom they know or knew. The person might be a parent, grand parent, aunt, uncle, teacher, coach, mentor, neighbor or other adult who made a positive impression on the student and their life.
Over the past three years, more than 1,600 Laws of Life essays have been written by students as a part of the contest. Our Rotary Club has found that the contest:
- Helps brings students, schools and the community together in support of and in celebration of the experiences of young people,
- Inspires students to write about their personal experiences and viewpoints,
- Reinforces and rewards literacy, and
- Provides teachers with another tool supportive of their curriculum.
Contest essays and entry forms must be submitted by February 13, 2009. The best essays will be submitted to an honor panel of judges chosen from the Novato community. The panel of Honor Judges will select the contest winners.
Contest winners will be awarded cash prizes of $300, $200, and $100 for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each of the Middle School and High School groups. $50 cash prizes will be awarded to those receiving Honorable Mention. The teachers of the 1st place winners will each be recognized with a $100 award.
The Laws of Life Contest awards ceremony is scheduled for April 9, 2009 and will be held at the Hill Middle School auditorium.
San Marin Teacher Coordinator is Mr. Scott McClod.
